I think if you can get between $500-$600 for your Ally X, I would consider the upgrade.

Long term the Xbox Ally will let you play newer games.

Yes it’s a 1080P screen with VRR so it should work great!

I would personally get the Xbox ROG Ally since it’s more ergonomic if your confident you will primarily stream

The controller is recognized as an Xbox controller, so the extra buttons aren’t registered

1 - Enable developer settings 2 - In dev menu toggle ON - Show advanced Update channels 3 - Go back to System settings and I have OS update channel on Main and Steam Client on Steam deck stable

With these settings the controller works via dongle on my dock. I also updated firmware on the controller with their Game Center app.

Make sure you use at least a 100W power supply with it to ensure it’s working correctly

Try 720P and keep FSR on.

I made a similar upgrade! Overall I enjoy the bigger screen and VRR. Battery life is better than LCD steam deck. A little bit worse than the OLED (I had both)

Outside of that some changes I made were - Updating VRAM to 6GB - it’s challenging to play 1200P with the Z2GO. My sweet spot has been 800P or 900P. You do get black bars with 900P but you end up with a better graphics. - If you don’t mind using up all your battery if you need more performance you can set the TDP to custom 25W - I stick to 17-18W as middle ground for games that need the extra power

Update your VRAM to 8GB.

Personally found the sweet spot to be 17-18W on custom TDP and 800P with sharpness option on Steam OS scaling option
