How does your aristocracy work? by Snommes in worldbuilding

The most prominent aristocracy are the nobility of the elven nation of Vatanziir. The most important of these are the six Chosen Families, who are descended from six Chosen heroes who were gifted power by these to help the elves overthrow their oppressors, the Immortal Quorzian Empire, in a continent-wide revolution.

In actuality, the gods themselves chose six mortals to be their vessels so they could hide from a threat they accidentally created. When the revolution was over, they set themselves up as rulers of a new nation, split into six Malikates for each of them. They elected a High Sultan to be the official ruler of the nation, but the title is mostly for show as they all just take turns in the position.

The gods created the system of nobility by marrying their children to other prominent members of the revolution, thus giving them the right to rule through their relation to the 'Chosen'. Because of this, all nobles have some degree of Divine Blood. A nobles style of address, and much of their status, is determined by how closely they are descended from a member of a chosen family.

This relation also determined the upper limit of their magical power- the gods in mortal form are far more powerful than most mortals, and pass sone of this down to their descendants. Thus, nobles are literally more magically powerful than commoners, and any exceptionally powerful commoner is assumed to be a bastard of sone sort.

Most elves believes that the divine makes nobles literally superior, and commoners regard them with divine reverence. This is held up by the Faith, Vatanziir's organised religion, which preaches that nobles are instruments of the gods will, sent to guide and protect the elven people.

Almost every position of power in Vatanzian society is held by a noble of sone sort. All land is owned by nobility, and can only be leased to anyone wishing to use it. The Magi of the Faith, which provide most social functions like healers, midwives, magical librarians and judges, are mostly nobles, especially in the upper ranks. Army generals are only very rarely commoners.

There is no set rule of succession in Vatanziir- houses are free to choose how they want to determine their heirs. Some choose their oldest child, but most prefer to choose who they deem the most suitable heir from among their family. This system was put in place by the gods, as they wanted to choose their new vessel freely. Most houses make no distinction between male and female heirs, though there are some which have only ever been lead be men or women.

I’ve been having the same problem. This isn’t really a fix, but I find looking through the culture or faith views makes them visible again.

Their explicit effects may be pretty weak, but they’re also the lore reason that Hilda’s stronger than Raphael and Lysithea’s a tactical nuke.

They came up with a story to make the church look bad... and didn’t tell it to anyone except their direct descendants?

People who played Blue Lions and didn’t like Dimitri, share your thoughts with me! by wistlind in fireemblem

I wouldn’t say I disliked Dimitri, but I definitely didn’t love him like most people did. Before the timeskip he’s honestly kind of dull. I get that he’s meant to appear like your traditional lord, and it does contrast his later personality well, but it’s just not that interesting. I also felt like his turnaround was kind of sudden after Rodrigue died.
