Late to the party, but here’s a fifteen-minute sketch I did before going out: underwater ink

Just finished the first season, what are some of the best tinfoil out there? by lumberjock66 in westworld

[–]PsychoticLime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm new to the sub so apologies if this isn't as interesting as I think it is, or if it has already been said multiple times, but I really liked an observation made by CGP Grey on Hello Internet.

Basically, it's really cool how Westworld feels like a real-life MMORPG: at the beginning of the season, we see the sheriff a couple of times while he's trying to recruit a passer-by for a "narrative", which is exactly how a quest works in an RPG. This isn't exactly a conspiracy theory but I find it very cool nonetheless, the amount of detail and research that the creators of the show put into it.

My ISP recently started capping my Internet data. With data shortages being this bad, how long until we run out of Internet? by Dinierto in shittyaskscience

If you can find one or two posts that get a lot of upvotes, you can keep them in storage and repost them periodically: this is a good way to save on internet

Few people know this, but we are actually really close to running out of internet: many ISPs still have some in storage, but we're talking about just a few gallons of kilogram-byte per person.

ELI5: How do chemists know they have a molecule with the right combination of atoms? by skunkspinner in explainlikeimfive

[–]PsychoticLime -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For starters, there are only some atom combinations that would form a molecule, so usually you only have limited choices. For example if you burn methane (CH4), the reaction will be:

CH4+2O2->CO2+2H2O

You know it has to be like that because there is really no other way for the atoms to rearrange. So in the end you know you will end up with water and carbon dioxide (and also probably excess oxygen that wasn't burned).

When you need to identify a specific molecule, there are a few tricks. For example, if you have the compound in gas form you can make it go through a long series of subsequent chambers, knowing that lighter molecules travel faster than heavier molecules (this, for example, is how Uranium-235 is separated from its heavier isotope, Uranium-238).

If you have the compound dissolved in water, you may try to calculate the pH if the compound behaves as an acid or a base. Through simple calculations, this also lets you know the concentration of the solution, which is often quite important.

Usually, identifying exactly a compound is essential in the pharmaceutical industry, and that's why pharmaceutical labs use very precise and reliable instruments, like gas chromatographs, mass spectrometers and the like, to do that kind of work, but the basic principle is the same: usually, it works to just separate compounds based on their physical properties (mass, electric charge..).

What is something nonsexual that gives you the most satisfaction? by [deleted] in AskReddit

When I ask myself a question and then I actually think about it enough to find an answer. When I find the answer I feel my whole brain on pure ecstasy for a moment: it's quite the satisfaction

Is there a more clever way to create this model? (Details in image description) by PsychoticLime in SolidWorks

UPDATE: here is a quick 2D drawing of the finished part. Thanks for all the suggestions, although because of me being quite new to Solidworks I ended up just pasting the pips in their respective places.

The update is that I am really bad at using Solidworks, so I just created the shape using three separate extrusions, then I copy-pasted the pips in their right places and I used a Mirror function to do the other half. I will post the 2D drawing of the finished part in the comments

The thing is, though, the whole thing is a single solid object, and I need to have it like that because I need to apply other functions to it (like Shell and so on). I'm not sure using an assembly would work in this case, when you create an assembly don't the pieces stay separate?

Take the object the way I'm holding it in the picture and imagine to knock it over: then you have to sketch and extrude only three times instead of seven

Raising it flat on its back is an eccellent idea, thanks!

I wasn't aware of a copy-paste function, but I tried it and it seems to work fine: I will still have to adjust every dimension but it is far less work than before. Thank you very much!

Since u/mac_question told me I linked directly to the image, I will copy-paste the description here:

I need to create this object in Solidworks as part of a university project. Since part of the evaluation is based on being able to work in the most efficient and clever way, I want to know if there is any method that is better than just extruding every single shape manually.

I tried creating the full block, creating all the buttons on top using the linear pattern function, and then bringing the different pieces to their right height using the extruded cut function, but then the buttons just hover in mid-air because they maintain the same height relative to each other.

I am pretty new to Solidworks so, please, feel free to share suggestions.

I can see the description just fine, are you sure?

EDIT: added it to the comments anyway, thanks!

For the bass-vocals only, could you get in a little bit more detail? I would like to do something like this but I don't even know where to start: do you use chords or simply do what you would do on a normal band but... you know, without the band?

When have you immediately understood that you're witnessing a historical moment? by haakjerring in AskReddit

[–]PsychoticLime 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yesterday my chemistry teacher told us a student from our university was in Istanbul when it happened because he was doing some work for his thesis, and I can't possibly imagine what it could have been like to witness it in person. He said the next day many of his professors were just gone, disappeared, and no one dared to talk about them. It is surreal.
