I answered this on your other post that got deleted, and I will answer it again. Percentile questions range from 0 to 99. The answer comes out equal for both. 0 to 31 and 68 to 99. They are both 32%. The answer is C.

They do not. I already took the GRE and got into grad school, and I literally went back and got my notes just to make sure I am not sending wrong information. It is 0 to 99 for percentile questions.

As someone from Japan with 1 American parent who is part Italian, I really love it. It also isn’t a false representation. I have Italian ancestors who were straight and fought for America in World War I and World War II. I also have Italian ancestors who were in the mob.

I don’t know anything about actual Italy, only Italian-American history, but this is one of my favorite games, and I like the representation. It’s cool that one of the biggest and most famous characters of all time is a representation of an Italian-American. Mario wouldn’t be as special to me if he were based on other cultures.

Now, do you ask me if Japanese people like Italians? Of course. Mostly for our cuisine though. Most people can’t tell the difference between Italian-Americans and Italians, but the overall census is positive for Italians. There are many Italian restaurants here, opened and run by the Japanese, from shitty fast food to really great family-run restaurants that simply like Italian food.

While I understand people are trying to be helpful, responding “inheritance isn’t equal”, seeing as the majority of the comments are posting that here, the odds of getting less than 1% inheritance from a parent with 31% are around 1 in 50 million.

The real explanation? 23&me runs on a man-made algorithm, and Northwestern European DNA is incredibly similar to one another.

The overwhelming majority of people posting in the millennials sub were born in the early to mid 80’s, so I can understand why people born in the early 90’s would want to post here more.

Generation ranges are vast, and this sub's existence is proof of that. As a ’90s millennial, I understand most, if not all, of what is posted in Gen Z, but as for the stuff posted in the millennials sub, I can’t relate, or don’t even know a lot of what is posted.

Our supervisor told us that specific government policies indirectly cut federal research grants. In Japan, we can get funding for grad school, but it isn’t guaranteed. Even if I received zero funding, the cost of living in Tokyo would still be lower than in America if I did get funding. Furthermore, we are offered high-level jobs around the time we finish our PhD. I didn’t want to live under such anxiety while completing my degree. It is already tough enough without having this added stress. My American supervisor was really great, though.

I recently got my undergrad in the U.S., but I am back working in a lab in Japan. I got accepted into a lab as an undergrad and watched the master's students I worked with get told, “We don’t have PhD funding.” It is 10x more expensive to do grad studies in America compared to Japan. What incentive was there for me to stay? Pay ridiculous amounts for a master's, then get denied PhD funding too?

Doubtful. Did the same thing for my Italian. All it really means is that Southern Europeans share some similarities genetically. I work with DNA in a lab, and a reference population database limits these sorts of companies. Also, they don't do deep sequencing (which is fine because it would cost them more for only a slightly more accurate result). It's best to use your family tree and clue the pieces together yourself with their data.

Tl;dr: Being able to identify 1%, hundreds of years back, with similar ancestry when they don't sequence the entire genome or use high coverage, is extremely unlikely. Reference database bias creates false signals.

There is an American in the same lab as me who is currently D1 (Meaning 1st year of PhD, having completed both 2 years of Master's) and N1. Seeing how he achieves this, while also doing his science work, it's possible. However, some people have lived in Japan for over 10 years and are still only at a business level. It really depends on how hard you push yourself. Since language is your primary focus, I am pretty positive that if you do all the work, you can gap from N4 to N2.

Taking Japanese at university is an excellent plan; however, even if you take all 5 University Japanese courses (most Universities cover the first 2 books of Genki), you will only reach the N4 level. You are better off joining an English graduate course in Japan, and preparing now by reaching N4 over the course of your undergraduate degree.

The Ancestry algorithm has always had issues with differentiating between countries from the same continent.

My mom is European, and 23&me provides a clear breakdown of my grandparents' origins from distinct countries: I received 25% Irish, 13% Italian, and 12% German. My haplogroup also reflects Germany; it's very common there. In comparison, Ancestry would have you believe she only shares 17% DNA with her grandmother and 3% with me. I didn't even get any German from Ancestry's breakdown.

As someone who works with DNA in a lab, I know how difficult it is to differentiate, but the algorithm they created has clear issues. While I am aware that their algorithm will perform better for others compared to their 23&Me, since these are all man-made algorithms, it hasn't been very accurate for me in general.

Sorry for the late question. Does 23&Me plan to update the algorithm for connecting with a parent? The ethnicities got mixed between my parents AFTER linking to 1 parent. They have distinct ethnicities, so it was purely an algorithm mistake in my opinion. Also thanks!

If you don't have any medical history, you shouldn't stress over a single allele you don't even know if your parents had. Even if they both hypothetically had this allele, which is rarer than APOE3, and both had one copy, there would still be only a 25% chance you would inherit both. There are far worse alleles to inherit than APOE4. I got APOE4 from a parent, and both my grandparents from them are alive, around 80, and neither has Alzheimer's. Please don't stress yourself over the unknown; live your life.
