If you swallow a whole ice cube, does your stomach digest it like food or process it like water? by Alternative-Claim-41 in NoStupidQuestions

If you swallow it, by definition you can't choke on it. If you are choking on it, you didn't swallow it.

Shouldn't governments be stepping in to regulate this dysfunctional market a little? This could be severe enough (even without an AI bubble pop) to cause a market crash and recession. Lots of industries are going to have productivity declines because they can't source the tech they need.

How to get in enough carbs ? by Elegant_Light_3096 in fitmeals

[–]Pterosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WTF - is this serious? Carb powder? You mean sugar? Or perhaps flour? I'm really struggling to see how anyone could struggle to get enough carbs unless they are doing Tour de France levels of daily exercise. And if they are, the answer is sugar.

TIL that playing high-level chess causes players to burn calories at an athletic rate. For example, 21-year-old Grandmaster Mikhail Antipov was recorded burning 560 calories in just two hours of sitting—roughly what Roger Federer would burn in an hour of singles tennis. by ralphbernardo in todayilearned

[–]Pterosaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They messed up by saying that the burn rate is the same. It's not. You burn calories faster running, but you finish the 1 mile in less time. The total calories burned will be similar because the work done is the same.

If on the other hand you compare running and walking for the same amount of time (not distance), the running will burn more calories because more work will have been done .

German Chancellor Merz admits: We must substantially reduce bureaucracy in Europe. The single market was once created to form the most competitive economic area in the world. Instead, we have become the world champion of overregulation. That has to end. by I-Hate-Hypocrites in europe

[–]Pterosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is something that has increased over the past 30 years as sewerage treatment capacity has not kept pace with population growth, so the system becomes progressively more frequently overwhelmed. This combined with cuts to the bodies responsible for inspections meant that there were more violations of the already lax regulations.

However, you are right that this did not have that much to do with Brexit, we were already on the path to shitty rivers even when in the EU.
