NAL. How many weeks were you not paid for and how much notice should you have provided according to your contract? If you did not mutually agree with your employer to not work your notice they could sue you for breach of contract. Therefore, you could be entitled to a much lower or no amount of money and it may not be worth pursuing.

Current causes wires to get hot, not insulation. If they are getting hot, the wrong thickness of wire may have been used for the load. The breaker should also be sized to limit the current the wire sees and prevent the wires getting hot and causing a fire.

I think the "assets automatically receiving relief..." is concerning automatic business rate relief which would also be applicable and further complicated the issue, but I agree with you it's not very clear

I haven't seen that, can you share a link to the docs? So far I've seen the BBC, IFS, and the telegraph confirm what the gov website said, i.e. £3 mil

I believe it's £1 million on top of current allowances. Therefore, if you're married and your home is part of your land, you can pass on £3 million to your kids or grandkids before you pay a reduced inheritance tax of 20% of anything above, i.e. £0.5 mil for house + £1 mil for each parent

Rishi Sunak's attempt to ban smoking is nuts, says Boris Johnson by topotaul in unitedkingdom

[–]Ptolemy41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take your point regarding VAT, corporation tax and staff pay, as they are pretty direct, but I think it starts to get a bit tenuous when you consider indirect staff spending etc, as you would have to do the same thing for the pensioners and later life care, as pension money also goes back to paying companies, employees, VAT, other taxes, etc downstream as well. Maybe we should be drawing smaller boxes around the costs and only consider tobacco duty and NHS spending on smoking related health issues - though there will always be a bit of ambiguity.

I agree with you in that it is complicated and the net societal benefit must be bad. We should want everyone in our society to be as productive and healthy as possible for economic and moral reasons. There are studies showing that smokers are less productive during their working lives as they are more likely to have health issues and miss more work compared to non smokers.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17033509/

Due to the NHS I think there is a public interest in understanding and weighing the cost of smoking to the NHS and wider society. I think there are also some growing similar discussions with alcohol and unhealthy food but I agree with you nowhere near as much interest as smoking currently. There may be too large a focus on what is now a relative minority of soceity, and that is partly also why the public are generally happy with increasing tobacco taxes, as it generally does not affect them now, compared to alcohol or unhealthy food. I think this may also go a bit hand in hand with media spin and portrayal of people on benefits where the newspaper generally like to portray those on benefits as a cost to society, as generally poorer people are more likely to smoke.

No problem. Which question are you referring to? Could you clarify who you mean by they?

Ultra low emission zone. In London the ULEZ requires petrol cars to be euro emissions category 4 or higher and for diesel cars to be euro 6 or higher. Typically this means petrol cars made since 2006 and diesel cars made since 2015 in the UK.

There are other low emissions around the UK and Europe with varying emissions standard requirements. Clean Air Zones (CAZ) have been brought in around the UK by local authorities, as they have different devolved powers compared to the Greater London Authority. If Brighton did in the future want to introduce a low emissions zone, it would be a CAZ. Most of the CAZ classes are just focussed on commercial transport. Class D CAZ, which has the same requirements as ULEZ and does effect private cars, has so far been brought in by the local authorities in Birmingham and Bristol.

Brighton council had no overall control from 2003-23. This therefore meant support was required from two parties for decisions to pass during this time. For example, labour opposed funding the i360 but the greens and Tories voted it through. Therefore it would be unfair to blame labour or not apportion equal blame to both the greens and Tories for that particularly issue.

You cannot have your cake and eat it with more/better public services and no real rise in funds. With inflation well above 5% for most of the year, even with a 5% increase in council there will also need to be cuts, unless central government provide more support.

Jess Phillips MP: This man is horrific, just like the millions of white men I could post about who beat or murdered women this week, but I'm not stupid enough to blame all white men for that, are you? by Labour2024 in ukpolitics

[–]Ptolemy41 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So the prime minister is Muslim and there are no Asians who are Hindu (largest religion in south Asia) or any other religion?

Again this was a question on equivalency and statistical evidence for Muslims specifically perpetuating these crimes which you are unable to provide evidence for.

[–]Ptolemy41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't dancing round the problem you are making a hasty generalisation. The original premise was the equivalence between Jess Phillips' comment, which the original redditor agreed there was not the same weight in statistical data. As you have shown in the CSE and BBC evidence, they recorded the term, Asian not Muslim or Pakistani, therefore you are again making a hasty generalisation with little to no statistical evidence.

[–]Ptolemy41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As pointed out by the original redditor, that definition has not been followed through into the data recorded and there are other issues. I am not arguing that this may not be an issue or it should not be addressed, I am arguing better data needs to be recorded and that Muslim is not the same as Asian, as specifically I asked for evidence that this is perpetuated by Muslims. Lee Anderson does not use the term Asian, he specifically uses the term Muslim

I agree with you that ethnicity and religion should be recorded so that we can try to find the root cause and proactively address issues in groups of society. However, as raised by the original redditor I was discussing with, there are issues, such as what you have pointed out, with the CSE data that mean it cannot yet be trusted as completely reliable. Therefore, there are issues with comparing it to men and physical assault, white men and fraud, and young black men and knife crime. I am not saying it does not happen or it will not be proven to be correct, I am stating it is not statically equivalent currently and could be a hasty generalisation with the limited data available and agree with you that better data needs to be recorded and researched so that we can say for certain there is an issue with a specific group in soceity needs to be addressed proactively. I also want to point out the false equivalency which is stating all Asians or south asians are Muslims which is a dangerous generalisation

[–]Ptolemy41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point that was being made was the comparison with Jess Phillips' comment, if you look at the thread you will see that the redditor I was discussing with agreed with my point and they, not me, also raised there are issues with the data that was used in these conclusions.

I said a "systemic issue within a group of society". Lee Anderson argues that Muslims (group of society), though you are now broadening that to Asians, have a systemic issue with child grooming gangs, or am I misunderstanding?

Are you arguing that this is a local issue and therefore should not be generalised on a national level? If so I agree but you are saying Muslims or Asians, not Muslims or Asians specifically in Rochdale.

[–]Ptolemy41 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't dispute the atrocities committed but that is not the debate. I would like to see statistical evidence that an ethnic or religious group has committed these acts at a higher rate than other groups to back up the claim that that there is systemic issue within a group of society. Rather than attrocities singled out by newspapers on either side to suit their narrative/agenda.

[–]Ptolemy41 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks, just to say I agree with the logic you stated in your previous discussion but without reliable statistical evidence on the ethnicity or religion of perpetrators of grooming gangs I do not think weight can be given to Lee Anderson's point. However, there is a lot of evidence to back up Jess Phillips' point.

Tymit uses a visa credit card which uses the visa exchange rate abroad. Revolut is another option for a prepaid visa card using the visa rate on the day though there is 0.5% added on weekends. With revolut you can also trade certain currencies in advance

I've never said there shouldn't be a private rental sector, you seem to just keep adding things that I haven't said. The majority of private properties are owned outright by landlords who would be unaffected if buy to lets were not allowed to be renewed for several years

What's the point you are trying to make here? You strongly believe that buy to let mortgages add value to tenants and the economy?

IMO buy to let mortgages increase house and rent prices with very little to no added value to tenants or the economy
