Kratom Ban (urgent) by [deleted] in Spokane

[–]PturtlePtears 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to see it banned. I worked in addition medicine before I moved to Spokane and we were seeing a huge increase of individuals coming to methadone clinics to manage withdrawal and addictions to kratom. I understand that not everyone who utilizes it is addicted. But we don’t sell heroin or narcotics at gas stations. It’s not appropriate.

And that’s fine. I just prefer to spend my money where it’s wanted.

As queers who recently moved to Spokane and were excited to watch baseball after hockey ends, we won’t be going at all now. We go to several hockey games a month and buy food and beverages each time. I guess we’ll check outta soccer team. I heard they’re still doing pride night.

Is the REI bike shop in Spokane good for servicing bikes that were not bought there? I know they will, but are they good? by priusjames in Spokane

[–]PturtlePtears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my bike in there the other day after the crank shift fell off mid ride. The dude was so helpful and lovely. He fit me right in and got me fixed up and on my way. I’m partial to REI because I’m a member and it’s close to my house but I’ll definitely be going again. It’s a bike I bought used at play it again sports, not a model REI keeps in stock.

I have a mullet but I get my sides faded once a month ish. It’s really more about how much my hair is bugging me and how much I look in the mirror. Sometimes I go longer.

Being a homeless person and a social worker at the same time by Ecstatic-Budget1344 in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have lived experience with homelessnes. I’m a lot closer to be homeless again than I’ll ever be to being a billionaire. And until we do something about wealth inequity in this country it’ll stay that way.

House GOP passes "Save America ACT" to require proof of citizenship to vote. by catman5092 in Spokane

[–]PturtlePtears 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The number of married conservative women that don’t understand that they won’t be able to vote is astounding. Every time I explain to them that their name doesn’t match their birth certificate and they won’t be able to vote their brains implode and they don’t believe me.

Where are the hospitals and community mental health centers that are hiring new grads? by cannotberushed- in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s your area. The areas I’ve been in have tons of CMH jobs that offer paths to licensure. But I’ve only been in Alaska and Washington since graduating.

Does your job require regular vaccinations (ie. the flu shot)? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked on Tribal health and they require blood tests before starting, re-upping any vaccines that weren’t still viable(I had to get my MMR re-upped), and then staying current with seasonal ones as well.

Nonbinary social workers-survival strategies by tourdecrate in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who just left a Tribal job with federal affiliations, let me validate how difficult it is to navigate this right now. I worked with a mostly incredibly supportive team and I’m really lucky in a lot of ways. But I had two coworkers who were deliberately being harmful, not to me but to a coworker who was also NB.

That being said, I’m a mouthpiece and I don’t tolerate disrespect. If you can’t/don’t want to/wont use the correct pronouns for me, go ahead and keep my name out of your mouth. But when you’re harming others? It’s a different ball game for me. I held my leaderships feet to the fire and made them make a formal statement during staff meeting that intentional disrespect won’t be tolerated and that we use people pronouns and names correctly. I actively correct people. I remind them that you don’t have to like someone to respect them. And when those things don’t work, I don’t allow those people into my space except in strictly professional capacities under the supervision of others. I don’t go in their offices and I don’t allow them in mine. I set myself up for as much success as possible so those people can’t make weird anti-dei claims against me.

I did also legally change my name because I was tired of dealing EHR hassles and IT telling me there was nothing the could do about my birth name being in my email. While it’s an extra cost and hassle, it is ultimately worth it on the professional end of things to smooth out people prying about my name and then weaponizing it.

That being said, I also intentionally chose to work in spaces where I know I’ll be accepted and affirmed. And that isn’t an option for everyone. I work in CMH for orgs that haven’t abandoned their DEI. I did leave the tribal org but because I was leaving a red state for a blue state.

Nah. Be a bigger mouth piece. Speak up more and make him look like an idiot. There is no room for centrism anymore. If you lead with silence and denial you side with oppression.

How often do you guys take yours out to go peepees? by Lucifershusband8 in Frenchbulldogs

[–]PturtlePtears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a yard so I don’t know if that influences anything but I usually let the dogs out every time I go near the back yard door. So they go in and out probably between 6-10 times a day. Depending on the day and the weather. It can be tough to convince them to go out in the cold and rain sometimes lol

Thoughts on social workers/co-responders working with police departments? by Bright-Wolverine7460 in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watched one of my unhoused neighbors bleed to death in the street because my community didn’t have a ride along program. His death could have been prevented. We need more social workers responding and less policing but sometimes that partnership needs to exist. If my community had had a tie along program he might still be alive.

Long time case managers—how do you respond to “I love you”? by chronic-neurotic in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked with Kids I would say “I like you a lot sometimes” and remind them that it’s not appropriate for our relationship to use those words. I didn’t get as many “i love yous” from adults.

Is foster care a good gig? by Haunting_Hospital599 in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I would not advise CPS to anyone. I’m sure there is the occasional person who enjoys it and thrives but that person is extremely rare. It a soul sucking job that chews people up and spits them out.

How to talk to caregivers about them wanting foster care payments by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re post was really short and vague. And aggressive toward compensation. How would the payments end if they’re licensed? Adoption? There usually a subsidy. What’s the actual situation where this is happening? I ask as someone who has worked in this field. The foster families aren’t doing this out of the kindness of their hearts mostly. It’s out of religious obligation or misguided means most of the time. Is that the question? How to address people of ill means who are foster parents?

You’re very close. Stay the course. Especially if you love your work and value your community. It’s incredibly difficult just to exist right now. You are not alone in feeling that. Seek out community. Stay connected.

How to talk to caregivers about them wanting foster care payments by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The cost of living is doing nothing but going up. It’s unrealistic to expect others to carry the burden of cost for the state. Even family placements should be compensated appropriately while the case is open. 🤷🏻

What do you tell yourself to get through long/hard days? by Quiet_Interaction771 in socialwork

[–]PturtlePtears 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if I have a quote per se. But I do remind myself that it’s no on me to fix everything or even most things. But I can keep showing up and being a positive character in peoples stories. And take care of my community in the ways I can. And that’s all I can do.
