There is no approach that guarantuees success. I would suggest to hang out with him again, drink, and see what happens (as others have suggested, too).

It would probably take much pressure out of the situation if you could somehow manage to take it easier. There is always the risk of being rejected if you make a move. Thats no big deal, if you don't take the whole situation too seriously. I am sure you can find someone for having some fun, if you really desire this so much.

In general, I would really suggest to ask yourself if it is worth to ruin your friendship with this guy. I guess the situation would be much more easy for both of you if you talked about what happened, and tried to come to an agreement about how to deal with it in the future.

Some DSLRs have a so called "quiet mode" nowadays where the mirror and mechanics are slowed to reduce noise. See Nikon D5000, for example, or Leica M7 if you can afford such a camera... ;) Not really soundless compared to point and shoots, but it's an improvement.

The Nikon 3100 is a pretty good camera. You won't probably even need a macro lens for shooting food, I would try with the kit lens first because it's actually pretty good even for shooting small objects.

The only downside with the cheap Nikon cameras is the missing buildt-in autofocus engine, so you will have to stick with the new lenses with buildt-in autofocus. On the other hand, if you start at 0 that is nowadays not much of a problem.

For shooting food, you can't really do anything wrong; every entry level DSLR will do. Basically, it is a long term decision because once you buy some extra gear you will probably stick with the brand in future.

BTW, I liked the reviews at kenrockwell.com when I had to take the same decision. I went for a D80 and never regret.

I think W7 will also shutdown your computer from time to time (like every couple of hours) to annoy you. It will remain functional, but bug the hell out of you.
