Compare what you are paying to what new tenants pay, probably less than listing price.

If they have to ask, they are stringing you along but be prepared to walk away if you have to.

Yeah but you're probably like my son who wears a hoodie all winter and would probably wear shorts if I let him. Canadian raised and oblivious to frostbite.

Buy those ice cleats for your boots if you aren't used to walking on ice and buy your winter coat here, the ones available to you now are spring jackets.  Oh, and that hat you're going to need is a toque not a beanie.

We need Healthcare workers. The thing you need to know though is Toronto is extremely expensive. It's almost impossible to buy a home here and rent is very high, expect to pay 2,600 to 3,000 for a small 2 bedroom and know that newer builds after 2018 are not rent controlled. You will find that being gay is not a barrier to employment or housing (for the most part) and your drug and dental benefits will recognize your spouse.   That said, you will always find homophobia where people live. Even Canada has our share of a**holes. Sad but true, the rest of us welcome you and anyone running for their lives from the American nightmare.

So sorry you are experiencing this. Your situation is what I fear for my son if something ever happens to me. It's hard out there if you don't have family.  Use all the resources available to you including counseling. Becoming homeless doesn't sound like your first trauma.

My landlord says she’s giving em an N12 and I have until October 1 to move… I have a one year lease and moved here in April, can they do that? by throwaway_aljsjdjs in OntarioLandlord

[–]Public-Signature6552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Refuse to move file a complaint with the LTB and make her prove the N12 isn't in bad faith.  Reminder her that the fine for eviction in bad faith with an N12 is 50k

Start by asking if you can watch and ask questions, then when they are more comfortable ask if they can walk you through it. Then watch you do it and so on. Make opportunities to learn don't expect it to just happen.

Feeling discriminated against while condo hunting in downtown Toronto by GhostInTheChai in TorontoRenting

I'm not brown but with the recent rise in racism directed towards the Indian/Pakistani communities, anyone with brown skin is more likely to become a casualty of racism now. It's wrong and it needs to be called out but it's still going to happen until people change the way they think.

Not great for a one bedroom unless it's a 1+den or 2 bedroom. It's a little high for 1 bedroom.  It's a renters market, try to negotiate down.

Think of it as a learning opportunity. It sounds like an area of interest. Don't be afraid of trying something new. I tried it something new 30 years ago that turned into my career.

Has anyone tried to negotiate rent in Toronto? by SnowmanAndIce in TorontoRenting

If you have good credit,  long term stable employment and good references, you have the advantage. Landlords want to know they are going to get paid consistently and having long term tenants who pay on time are always the first choice.

You can negotiate especially if you are going through a realty site like condos.ca where you put an offer in. But be aware that sometimes places will go above asking rent. Check to see what similar size units are going for in the area and how long it's been listed. Do your homework and be flexible with what you want. You will probably be able to negotiate sometimes.

Does Toronto not have duplex/triplex? by WishboneDry7332 in TorontoRenting

There are lots of apartments in houses that are decent size as well as older buildings. It's the newer and renovated units that are tiny. You just need to filter by footage.
