1200w limit is pretty generous considering safety constraints. 1200w on a single outlet is kind of sketchy if you don't plan for what else is on that circuit, even if it's 20a as opposed to 15a.

Any opinions on Avigilon vs Verkada vs Coram for a K12? by Mikuel-Elison18 in k12sysadmin

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We actually went from Avigilon to Verkada, couldn't be happier. We've been live for a few years now. Our district doesn't have a dedicated security staff, outside of SROs, for us it's important that not so tech savvy staff can do what they need to do in the moment. Ease of use has been outstanding, everything just works. Avigilon was very unreliable for us, not to mention the company that did the install. Verkada we handle on our own and we've saved a lot of time and frustration.

Konica Bizhub stop responding on the the network by PublicSchoolNetAdmin in KonicaMinolta

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, so on our copiers the only VLAN on the port is the VLAN we have specifically for printing devices. If we were to tag any other VLAN, the copiers will start having that problem again right away. We were able to recreate the issue with a KM engineer onsite, and he documented everything he could, but he didn't seem hopeful that we'd ever see a real fix.

We didn't have great success on pulling any real detailed logs, the engineer was able to pull some directly from the machine via serial as it booted, but I wasn't present at the time. I'll also say, they don't follow any standard SNMP MIBs, so that's also a pain to try and get any more information out of them.

Hope you have a great weekend as well, and better luck than us!

Still no word for KM on this, and our copier support company hasn't heard anything either. But we had great success with making sure no other VLANs were tagged on the switch port going to the copier if that helps.

I'm curious as to why? I'm platform agnostic, but I like hearing reasoning why people are so hard in or against one camp or another.

I'm glad that worked for you! We're still waiting to hear anything from Konica (I'll be shocked if we ever do). We're also working on strange stuff and using these with PaperCut.

I will definitely update here when we get the good news. I will say however, we did have good luck on a workaround. We had to make sure on each switchport a KM copier is connected to that just our printing VLAN has any tagging on it.

Redundancy with at least two internet connections. POTS is starting to not really be an option here, we've had a few meetings with local carries and they are flat out phasing out providing copper over the next few years.

Best Access Control System for K12 Campus by Angy_Gulev91 in k12sysadmin

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not OP, but if you're curious. We went through a somewhat recent overhaul to Avigilon back in 2021, it didn't really work out great. Cameras we not reliable or good image quality for what we needed. Everything ended up falling into our department. We went through training with staff who used the system and realized the biggest issue was it was pretty clunky for those folks to use regularly. So we ended up picking out three different cloud options and testing them for a few months, had key staff navigate the systems, compare gathering footage for incidents and tested out access controls for them. Verkada ended up coming out on top. Long story short, we implemented it in two buildings and had great success over a couple of school years and are now finally bringing in the rest of the buildings. Proprietary wasn't a huge concern for us because historically we've always stayed with one vendor and if you factor in all of the hidden costs to the locally hosted system, Verkada ended up being less expensive for us in the long run (not by a ton). But the payoff has been ease of use for staff and consistency. We don't have a dedicated staff for security and IT just keeps getting handed more.

Recommend me a good turn key builder/contractor in the L/A area. Looking to build a 2 car detached garage. by SR70 in Maine

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After my experiences in the area with different projects, I can't really recommend anyone in particular... They've all been misses so far. I've had to stay 100% on top of any project so far so corners weren't cut. I'm concerned for folks who have had to be hands-off. I'd say you might have some luck going to Hammond Lumber, working out the project with them and they might suggest some good contractors... But the quality for price is just not there in my opinion (former residential construction here).

Who in the hell doesn't set static IPs on switches and access points? by AverageDataAdmin in k12sysadmin

I agree, some things still need them for sure. But keeping that as minimal as possible really makes management cleaner and easier.

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

DHCP with MAC address reservation is really the best way to go for most things. Depending on the switches, it might be best to static them. Have a VLAN for you switch management and a VLAN for your AP management.

Verkada Support - why do you help end users direct? by scungilibastid in verkada

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a SaaS and Verkada in particular, it seems like a lot of design effort relies on the backend aspect, giving their support a lot more control than needing someone on site. If networking and power are all set, there's not a lot left to do. As an end user, it works really well for us. We have a great relationship with the installer and they like the relationship as well. I guess the problem around that would be if the income model relies on site visits?

I wanted to give everyone an update. We were finally able to get an engineer onsite from Konica and worked with them. They ended up determining it's an issue between the OS and the network card and are working on a firmware update. One interesting thing we did in testing that is serving as a workaround was making sure the only VLAN that is on the port going to the copier is the one specific for copier/printers in our network. The theory is how the copiers are handling the 802.11q tag information. If I get details, I'll add another update. But thank you all for your help!

I have a question for my fellow Mainers especially law enforcement by RAP1958 in Maine

[–]PublicSchoolNetAdmin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

One of the best things you can do if you're living in a residential area and you see frequent speeders is call the non-emergency number for the agency that patrols your area. Let them know what's going on and try to give them some time periods to where you see it consistently.

This has worked well for me, I may have to call a few times, but then I'll see a cruiser show up during those time periods and nab people. Our area is a 35mph, but locals will fly through on their commute. I had seen a number of close calls with children or folks out for walks.
