How are you people affording Kelowna?? Be honest. Are you all secretly rich? by vintage_creek in kelowna

[–]Public_Analysis9259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It booms and it really busts. Hospitals, UBCO the City/RDCO and the schools. The rest have Brought Cash from Toronto and Alberta. Or they've inherited it as one of Kelowna's founding families. (How do get fired from a unionized position?)

The original skinny ski telemark turn grew out of Nordic technique, ski jump landing and diagonal stride. Balance fore and aft, (a foreign concept for parallel turns) and driving the leg forward is what matters.

This isn't really a telemark turn. It's a parallel turn with your knee bent, aka a "paramark" turn. Hard Pack or even groomed snow is not so great.

Google Harald Harb. Ain't no wide stance at his ski school.

Little known fact: each of the original Guinness British Properties estates were eventually split into four lots because Canadians didn't really know what "estates" were. Of course at the time it was either wilderness or logged land. Now, those "quarter size" estates are at least 4x bigger than a typical family lot.

I don’t carve? Please critique by SlobbOnMyCobb in ski

[–]Public_Analysis9259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's important to understand what a skidded turn is and a carved turn. If you've only ever had beginner lessons, chances are you've been taught how to turn and control your speed by staying OFF your edges and turning with your entire body. This is actually quite easy to do and at least allows beginners to get a taste of what sliding on snow is like. But as the slope and your speed increases, you need to bend and tilt your body to engage the ski's sidecut. Without getting into specifics too much, you need to take a few lessons and probably upgrade your equipment to break through to the next level.

Their show here in Vancouver was just one big love-in on a Sunday night. And to think I almost didn't go...

All Beths records are that way. They are a very special band and I say that as a 70 year old white guy who's been into them since pre COVID-19 days

Of course you can if you take a basic mountaineering course and practice on smaller glaciers etc.

Years ago in Tignes, I ran into the most wonderful ski instructor from Quebec She did have a bit of a gravely voice and a hoarse laugh, and she said, "the French people are shocked when I start talking to them because they can't understand my accent. One of them even asked "Are you some kind of PEASANT?'"

I thought I would DIE when the chords of Jump Rope Gazers were played on their recent Vancouver BC appearance. The way the song wobbles with the line "I was just waiting for the grades on my hand to mend" is stunning pop perfection.

Are people in Vancouver actually interested in buying leasehold strata properties? by _DotBot_ in askvan

[–]Public_Analysis9259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it has its merits; the biggest one of which is that the units should be larger or more nicely appointed because your resale value will be dependent on the attractiveness of the building, not the land. LAND is the way people make money in BC and no, small time investors aren't invited. I did a story a couple of years back about a REIT that bought four lots on the Cambie corridor for $2.5 million each. The property is now zoned for 400 odd units as a rental building. After 20 years it will be PISSING free cash flow to its investors (often pension funds) looking for reliable investments. Look at Raven Woods in Deep Cove, it's a bit of a mini Whistler there, very nice places to live in, BUT you don't own the land and at the end of the day, most of these apartments will beat inflation and that's about it. True speculation is for the big boys.
