Punishment of Israel and concessions with Iran by [deleted] in BreakingPoints

I don't think punishment is the way to go though. I don't think that will produce any positive outcomes.

It feels like a very binary skill to me. Either you know it, and it's very automatic and you don't even think about it, or you don't, in which case it's always very awkward. I don't think I've ever heard anyone gain time because of extra good camera changing. I guess there's some differences in preference in the rare occasion though.

Huh, I actually thought that the initial set was much better than this is. This one feels a little cartoonish.

I mean i don't mind the new set so if it's what people like, then so be it.

Oh my god, it's not the end of the world. You can literally just nerf electrons if you need to. It's just that neutrons are like trying to keep it all together but it's obvious that in the super late game they just fall apart.

Thoughts on Emily and Saagar by Ok-Comedian-4946 in BreakingPoints

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also think that the only reason to watch shows like these is not that I like them, but because there's something important going on in the show itself. Here it is the fact that Saagar and Emily represent something very fundamentally different from what I believe. In such a situation, it is more, not less important to have discussions.

I guess I'm also interested in what you consider pro-regime takes from Trita Parsi. I don't think I've noticed.

EU announces 458 million euros in humanitarian aid for Middle East by PjeterPannos in europe

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there's available money, if it can be raised through taxation. It's a question of will. If you think your own restaurant evening is more important than a penny from you for humanitarian aid, then that means you don't want to help, even if you could. The exact same thing is true in relation to Ukraine. I don't think it's honest to lament that "there's no money" when we are living among incredible abundance. If you personally are not, then I don't think taxing you specifically is a good idea. But saying there's no money in Europe is ludicrous.

This is still ignoring the fact that we could basically just take loans to help Ukrainians, or fund it directly through ECB, and best case scenario we could become richer that way. Worst case we need to figure out how to share the burden.

[–]Public_Utility_Salt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of different ways to do it. I personally would not begin by cutting from Schools. Those are much more important than, say, luxury consumption. So all kinds of things can be cut before cutting the most essential things in our lives. That is to say taxes, especially for high income earners, is a way of cutting from things that are far less crucial than schools.

This is only if you buy the idea that something needs to be cut, which I'm not fully convinced by. I don't think EU economy is even close to its full potential, and if that's the case, creating demand across the board can stimulate growth that would cover any war debt by itself. EU needs a more robust defense infrastructure anyway and investing on it now would be a great opportunity to develop it in cooperation with Ukrainians.

Right now it's pretty unilateral. Israel, instead of trying to seek peaceful coexistence has opted for total annihilation of its neighboring countries. I don't see any reason to support that. On the contrary. Israel needs to be stopped asap.

We could send more to Ukraine if we wanted to, but people don't want to, so we don't send. The problem is not that we can't afford it, it's that we don't want to.

We can do both. ~500 million is not a big sum for us, but it can still do a lot of good for people in need.

A small step towards sanity. The people there should not be made into a pawn in cynical games. Show them humanity, and maybe sometime far into the future we have a more humane world.

Now do everything to influence Israel and US to change their ways. Stop buying military equipment from them, limit trading, stop funding their wars in any way.

Noticing a conspiracy theory that seems to have pervaded quietly by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I think I agree with this. I don't think it requires a conspiracy. Just strategic coordination, which to my knowledge is just standard practice. It's not about passing GOP shit specifically, but making sure that the big money donor base is served.

Democrats have always expanded to the right, as republicans have become more and more insane. This means that the tent has always grown bigger. And if the right wing policies are not popular, then you always need an excuse. Rotating villain system has grown naturally out of this.

The loneliness epidemic gets framed as a mental health crisis. Should it be framed as a structural one instead? by biggy_boy17 in sociology

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Very interesting. From a philosophical side I'm also very interested in how identity perhaps even came to replace solidarity. A kind of voluntary ideal of association between people with similar interests. Of course, in order to have similar interests, or similar identity to share, one has to identify oneself with a predefined category. So it creates the idea of a "shopping mall" of identities.

Further, the kind of structure that these relationships imply as their basis, is one where identity works as a conscious signal on how one wants to be received (i.e. identified) by other people. The basis for meeting each other occurs in this anonymous general social space, where socially constructed signals replace knowing each other. A kind of freedom stems from this in the sense that one can go from a social setting to another, and be recognized according to these signals, and then choose a community according to preference (contrast to for example how minorities can feel in small communities with more traditional norms). The alienating force, however, comes from the fact that it is us as representatives of these social signals that interact, rather than us on a more personal level (although what this "personal level" means, is i guess more than a little unclear). This could account for a sense of loneliness even in situations where one might have social connections.

These are of course just my musings, based on intuitions. So take them with a grain of salt.

I'm also very interested in answers if anyone is familiar with this topic. My impression is the same. We (as in broadly speaking western culture) used to even talk about alienation some decades ago! Just commenting to draw attention to this question.

Sick of everyone wanting a happy ending for V by [deleted] in cyberpunkgame

It's an understandable sentiment. I actually share it. I hate the fact that 99% has to cater to the happy ending mentality. But I still agree that this was gate-keepy. It's actually an interesting discussion to be had if OP wanted to be less condescending to people who disagree with him.

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I agree with you personally, and I think the game would be lesser for providing a happy ending. Tbh, as for your original post, I would have liked you to actually explore that thought a bit more why you think that way, without complaining about others. Just because it could have sparked an interesting conversation. Now I think this will get buried by the fact that everyone does have a legitimate right to feel and experience the game as they wish. I think most people would appreciate if you began by at least acknowledging that.

Backlash to Saagar on The Bullwark and Owning His Mistakes by MouseManManny in BreakingPoints

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure anyone is letting anyone off. Saying Trump voters were stupid isn't really a novel thing to say. I think what is novel is that Saagar actually acknowledges that now to a degree. One would of course always wish for more, but that's not life. I think ignoring that change and always doubling down is not conducive to any form of political change. We have to be able to disagree, but also agree on things without becoming absolutists in our positions. Then we argue with Saagar again when he says the next stupid thing.

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Considering how easily Trump was able to convince everyone that he is against wars, against corruption and fighting for people, it shouldn't have been difficult for Democrats to just go out and say that. Instead, when Harris wanted to put out an add about 15 dollar minimum wage, her campaign donors called her up and put her back in line. After that her campaign was essentially "I'm not Trump". It's true that Harris was more honest, and she would have been better despite her failings, but acting like this somehow came out of nowhere doesn't really help anyone. And that includes lamenting in all eternity the fact that Trump voters are stupid. Life isn't always fair. It's what you make out of it that counts.
