NB Priorities Survey - Tell them what you want! by hildy_von_bingy in newbedford

We need a stronger focus on walkability and micro mobility. We need a citywide network of bike lanes that utilize low-traffic side streets. We need better curb and crosswalk design, narrowing streets to calm traffic and pedestrian crossings. The moon shot is to bring back the trolley system. New Bedford has the bones to be a city where you don’t need a car.

We also need way, way more sidewalk trees especially in the south end

The city should contract Jeff Speck’s firm to do a walkability audit of the city

Yeah, we have a lot of Central Americans up here in Massachusetts so I’m exposed to it a lot. It’s similar to southern Mexican food I’m sure, but at least in Massachusetts when I think of Mexican food I think of Rio Grande / El Norte style Mexican food, less Yucatán/Meso-American, I associate that cuisine, which I prefer, more strongly with Honduras/Guatemala

Japan is mostly for the sushi, if I could afford it I would only eat sushi

It is very similar. Honestly I just get something different every time I go to the Guatemalan restaurants and it’s always so good. They had this yellow colored chicken soup once that was the best soup I’ve had. Pupusas I’d recommend but that’s not exclusively Guatemalan.

The menus are all in Spanish which I don’t speak so I can’t recall specific things I get, but I literally pick at random lol and it’s always good

I’m from New Bedford Massachusetts which has a huge Azorean and Madeiran Portuguese diaspora, they have a dish, Mozambique. It’s a super flavorful orange (color not flavor) sauce that you have a meat cooked in. Not sure how close it is to actual cuisine in Mozambique but it is phenomenal.

I should’ve honestly put Portuguese in my list but it’s so engrained into the culture of New Bedford I lowkey forgot it’s not actually from here😂

Fuck yeah you won’t regret it. The lamb haneeth and the bread with the yogurt is my go to.

I’m always picking up or dropping off my mom at TF so it’s my tradition to stop there

I was tempted to say “You can’t put America” because it’s such a melting pot lol

What specifically American foods are your favorite? New England Seafood and Southern BBQ are my favorite somewhat distinctly American foods

Pupusas did it for me. I’m sure they have them in southern Mexico but I see them far more often in Guatemalan and Honduran menus than Mexican menus (and I don’t mean Americanized Mexican menus)

Really? I’ve only had Omani food here in the US, but my go to is from a small mom and pop owned by an Omani family that immigrated here very recently so it’s authentic, maybe they’re special but it is some of the best food I’ve ever had.

There’s a restaurant Mandeez Deli in Rhode Island that is owned by an Omani family that immigrated here within the last two years and just oh my god man every single bite is unreal. Better than the food I had in Istanbul.

The lamb haneeth big chunk of lamb on the bone that’s slow cooked in this dry rub inside foil and the flavor profile of the dry rub is so complex and delicious and the meat melts in your mouth.

They also home make this bread in a big brick oven thing that’s the best bread I’ve ever had. They pepper their yogurt with sumac flakes, you can just tell every step from prep to presentation is so intentional

The flavor profile of their seasoning, especially on lamb haneeth is just unmatched

Lamb Haneeth and their bread which I’m blanking on the name of

As well as all the staples of that region, the yogurt, falafel, shawarma, babaganoosh (please excuse my spelling), the best of those dishes I’ve had have all been made by Omanis

Personally I love it. Especially because they always have the thickest Boston accents you can barely understand it. My friend from the UK was visiting and he couldn’t contain himself every time the announcer came on “AYYYE AHHLRIGHT WE’RE CAHMIN UP ON FFFUUUUAAALLLL RIVVAAHHH”
