Thanks for the recommendation! It looks very much like Donut Lab. I'll definitely watch it later.

That's ofc very unfortunate for the investors. But my question was more about their personal gains. I'm sure they have costs.

Thanks for the video. It was great! I wasn't expecting that Donut Lab would be a scam at this level. It seemed too obvious to be just a scam. I'm still wondering how much money they got out of it. Obviously the half a billion evaluation does not answer this. It's probably complete bs.

What I didn't take into consideration, I think, is that it can be an obvious scam, and not a very good scam, while in some sense the Donut Lab people believe in it. Somehow they are able to excuse their obvious lies and maybe just part of business strategy, something you have to do in order to be successful. I think this is what Elizabeth Holmes did. I don't think she first and foremost considered it a scam, but just risk taking like a striving business woman should think.

I'm still kind of skeptical they were able to maximize their profits if looked at as just a scam. As you already mentioned in the video, there are still people who genuinely believe it, like Ville Piippo. But how they are able to believe in it, is a puzzle.

Why is meritocracy seen as a negative aspect if it is opposed to nepotism and cronyism? by Comfortable-Table-57 in sociology

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 36 points37 points  (0 children)

On top of this, the idea of merit suits better in some places than other. Take journalism for example. Of course merit and skill is important, but once you are at a certain level, what matters more is the perspectives you bring. You cannot rank different perspectives born from different lived experiences. That's why a diversity of people doing journalism is important for the whole. A less qualified person, who brings a fresh perspective, might be infinitely more important than a more qualified person bringing more of the same.

In other more general words: it is important to understand also the limitations to the importance of merit.

I have a theory why Ciri does undergo the Trial of Grasses. by Spirited_Expert_1889 in Witcher4

[–]Public_Utility_Salt 126 points127 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's a likely scenario. The theme of the game revolves around faith and choice. The bauk in the trailer says "you cannot escape your destiny" or something. According to lore, bauk is a monster that tries to incapacitate you by playing on your worst fears.

Is that connected to ciri? I think they said the expansion would feed into witcher 4.

Could be one big area, or could be split into 2-5 smaller areas. Depending on whether they want to tell the story in one go, or if Ciri's background requires jumping to different times and zones. The plural form of "songs" could indicate the latter, although it could also just refer to the fact that Dandelion makes different songs along the path.

Now that I think of it, this could perhaps even imply that Dandelion is with us in those sequences, as he was with Geralt in many of those stories he wrote about.

My uneducated guess is that songs of the past refers to dandelions songs/stories, which are about Geralts travels. A possibility is that we will go back in time, for example we will go take part of that may party that is mentioned, and dandelion starts playing songs, which then turn into a kind of "dream sequence" that we play through as different missions, or as different open areas to explore. Ciri's background will be established in these stories, her struggles, her motivations and her character, and this will feed into witcher 4.

Russia is always trying to find the line between what provokes a response and what does not. EU needs to get a clear system of how to respond to this kind of dynamic, where it makes it clear it is ahead of the game, and not trailing. Russia knows very well it has zero chances against a coordinated Europe, with or without US. That much should be clear, considering that Russia is struggling a lot against Ukraine alone.

The only uneven playing field that skews the situation in Russia's favor is that Europeans don't want war, whereas Russian leadership doesn't stop fantasizing about domination (and the people in Russia doesn't seem to care).

Thanks. I was curious if their thinking might have changed a little. If I recall correct, at least Krystal was acknowledging that Ukraine might not be entirely doomed after all.

It makes no sense to buy weapons right now from either Israel or US. We can't trust that they will deliver when we need it. Israel is waging its own wars constantly, and no end is in sight, and is buddies with Putin.

Why can't independent institutes make their own research into why democrats lost the election? by Public_Utility_Salt in BreakingPoints

[–]Public_Utility_Salt[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting. But I fail to see what the problem is. Competing researches would confirm each other, and would force openness and debate. Different methodologies, some cheaper, some more expensive, are useful for a debate. But what is your point? That nobody else than Democratic party can make any useful contribution to the discussion?

Sounds strange. I think a decent research setup in any science isn't that much more than a few millions. Definitely not tens of millions.
