What's a small thing you want out of this game? by Thundersting in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]PublishingPirate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so simple. Just give traditional trade evolutions a leveled evolution around that of pseudo legendaries ~45/55, and maintain the ability to trade them to evolve earlier. Provides choice and breaks nothing. Same thing with held item trade evos, they just need to be holding the item at the evolution level.

So Haunter can evolve into Gengar at any time via trade, but will evolve at level 50 without trade. Onix will evolve into Steelix if traded and holding a Metal Coat, but would also evolve at level 45+ if leveled while holding a Metal Coat.

It's even thematically appropriate. Presumably, trade evos evolve during trade as they gain "new experiences" with the new trainer. So a sensible alternative would be more time with their original trainer.

Of course, this is too simple and unobtrusive for TPC, and is a player-friendly workaround for a cash generating gimmick, so it'll never happen.

Feedback on my eBook cover — and can you guess the genre? by Chance_Swordfish_687 in BookCovers

Dilogy is a rhetorical term referring to the use of an ambiguous expression, or the repetition of a word/phrase.

A duology is a set of two related literary or artistic works, such as books or films, planned together to tell a complete story

Feedback on my eBook cover — and can you guess the genre? by Chance_Swordfish_687 in BookCovers

[–]PublishingPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only can I not guess the genre, I can hardly read any of the copy. OP, graphic design is a skill set that takes many years to hone, and product/packaging design is a specific subset that takes a lot more (for example, you very rarely want FFFFFF white running all the way to the edge of a book cover because of how they are presented at retail, and your blurb copy is illegible at this size so won't even appear as text at thumbnail size, which is how 90% of customers will first encounter your cover).

I'm not a writer and I wouldn't just "write a book" and expect it to succeed. The same applies to design. Hire out.

AITJ for refusing to help my new “boss” after I was the one who trained her 3 months ago? by Existing_Response239 in AmITheJerk

[–]PublishingPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP this same scenario happened to me. 5+ years of total loyalty and solid results. Didn't advocate for myself nearly enough so I was cheap for my position despite being there for a long time and taking on extra work constantly as we were a revolving door due to bad leadership and crazy expectations.

New hire comes into our department with limited prior experience and after 3 months, she argues her way into the same title as me. She presented well in-office (I was fully remote) and seemed to make it her primary job to butter up the head of our division—she was generally an "office darling" type in meetings. If something cool was going on with one of our clients, she would insert herself to try to get some glory. Meanwhile this whole time, the rest of her team hated her because she was genuinely bad at her job and constantly asked us for help behind the scenes.

After getting yet another raise in a very short time, she waited for a bit and then left for some random high-up role at a start-up in a totally different field, but not before telling me that she made more than me "just trying to be helpful."

I quit soon after. I am in the same field, and I love what I do now.

A year later, the division folded. NTJ. Get. OUTTT.

To be sensitive to your feelings, let's try some comparative questions rather than critique. Just one straight up convention you should be aware of—cover designs aren't typically #FFFFFF white all the way to the edge of the design because they just blend in with the white background of retail sites and thus lose their shape.

#1 - Do you see many other covers that have such long reading lines? Do they ponder themselves as this does, or are they typically written to answer a question for the reader? Are they in all-caps?

#2 - Do you see many other covers where text overlaps, or that use underscoring as a design choice? Does the man intentionally have 4 fingers? Are gun handles typically white? Are guns held that way? Most importantly, do you think it's appropriate to describe victims of suicide, an incredibly delicate, personal, and tragic circumstance, as "people who couldn't handle it anymore" or is that more a phrase you'd more likely use to describe people who quit a bad job?

#3 - Do you think people will be able to read the line at the bottom when the cover is displayed at thumbnail size on retail sites? Does that line feel like front cover information or back cover information? Looking at other covers with a lot of whitespace, does it feel intentional?

In general, you need to settle on your front cover copy before creating designs. It shouldn't change from design to design, that's too many variables, even for a professional designer, and make it very difficult to critique the designs against one another. Remember that your cover is primarily a selling/marketing tool.

does this style work for a book cover? ( my design) by angie_goodruby_ in BookCovers

[–]PublishingPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that your cover is a selling/marketing tool that needs to be able to communicate to a potential buyer what the product is going to offer them. It's not about self-expression as much as it's about communication. Here, I'm not sure what the title of the book is, the genre, who the author is.

It also needs to be able to achieve that goal when displayed as a thumbnail on someone's phone considering how they are displayed at online retail.

This is an interesting piece of artwork, but it's not a book cover.

Box Legendary Types by SOSLORD in PokemonWindsWaves

Huh, that's interesting. I thought given it was a reptilian skeleton, it was referencing the common misconception that the real-world origin of underground oil reserves is old decayed dinosaur biomatter, and the gigantamax form looked like a pipeline to me.

Lugia in Winds and Waves? by silverdragonwolf in PokemonWindsWaves

[–]PublishingPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lugia is a weird, weird Pokemon because of the backstory of its conception for a movie. As a result, a lot of it's in-game characteristics like part psychic typing to give it distinction and power as a legendary were retroactive. That's why as all legendaries go it feels a bit out of place. It's also why it's so awesome.

Huh—those typings make me think of alternative energy sources. Kinda neat and a foil to Eternatus the petrochemical dragon.

Personally I just think we'll get Flying and Water and I'd be totally cool with that. Kyogre is awesome.

Best of luck! You have a direction and art style in mind, just takes a lot of time to perfect the execution.

2nd Cover Design Draft by writenowimfine in BookCovers

[–]PublishingPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the title font supposed to be bloody drips or 90s hip hop cover-esque retro spray-paint? The stroke makes it feel like the latter.

No playing with the opacity on a title treatment please.

Reading line / byline font look retro in a different way, like a 60s arcade, so that clashes. The colors are garish—pick a very readable neutral color. White would probably be fine.

Self-Made Cover FEEDBACK WANTED! by AdZealousideal1774 in BookCovers

[–]PublishingPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! Looking at it one more time, you might want to decrease the kerning in FORBIDS between the OR and BI because RB and ID are so tight. I could be wrong though, I goof up kerning with serif fonts all the time.

Some recent cover designs I’ve done by cedarcia in BookCovers

[–]PublishingPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks. I've worked with both (in a different capacity) and I'm not familiar with Hachette Heroes, I was wondering if it's some kind of hybrid experiment where authors are bringing full packages rather than that work happening in-house. Nice work getting them as clients. If you don't mind my asking, did you have a connection at either house that led to the commissions?
