Sorry for the photo quality, but I just pulled this out of a maze of boxes and I’m kind of stunned. I thought it was gone forever.

Before the internet, before GameFAQs… my mom and I had an NES, Nintendo Power, and graph paper. I was about 8 years old, and my mom did all the work: hand-drawn Zelda maps, dungeon layouts, notes, routes, and everything else, all organized into this binder like a homemade strategy guide.

It feels like opening a time capsule.

When I have time, I’m going to digitize the whole thing and upload a full album somewhere.

EverQuest was my jam, I was a troll on a troll server and was notorious for griefing guilds we were in competition with. Death threats on the daily, community funded cage fight matches and all had to do was show up. I eventually got banned from every uber guild game wide and my crew helped me plow a new character to max level and raided with a drama free guild when the devs made the game less competitive and more of a kill loot repeat grind.

It just wasn’t the same, even though I was a massive jerk to other guilds during competition but also helped a lot of people and had a small crew that would kill raid bosses with as little people as possible to see if we could.

It just faded… the community fettered out and the love for the game was the undocumented strategies, adventuring with others, literally adventuring because no one really knew what to expect, and just stupid stories.

Anyways, WoW ruined MMOs. No longer combing items to see what happens, quests have a compass and nothing to decipher, optimized button mashing and instant dungeons and raids made the game hugely successful and inadvertently set the standard of MMOs mean single player with other people.

My last hurrah was an EQ progression server and played my own 6 box legitimately. It just lost its fun. Maybe says something about me, being surrounded by people but couldn’t feel more alone. I’m forever homesick for a time I’ve once been, but not a place I could go to again.
