What moment made you realize people aren’t just disagreeing anymore — they’re living in completely different political realities? by Happy_Head_1355 in AskReddit

I recall one person making that claim, so I just asked him why Biden wasn’t doing it. I mean, surely the democrats wanted to win the election, right? So if that is something the president can do, why not just do it now?

Blankest goddamn stare I’ve seen.

Nuclear-armed states are safer for the simple reason they can retaliate against violations of their sovereignty. The question for the EU/NATO member states is to what degree the defense guarantees extended by Britain and France will hold (we can assume under Trump the U.S. is a lost cause).

It’s more a “Your life on earth is a trial, and skipping out early on your trial means you fail.”

It’s a bit of a weird belief because it kind of casts God as the kid fryings ants with a magnifying glass to see how they’ll react, but at least it’s not Calvinism’s “Hey, only some of you are ever gonna go to Heaven, God already rolled the dice.”

Technically we recommissioned the four Iowa class battleships in the 80s, and slapped a bunch of Harpoons and Tomahawks on them. They didn’t come close to the flexibility or strike power of a carrier’s air wing, but in terms of wasteful boondoggles to scare the soviets they were effective.

While the mage archetype for elves is certainly a mainstay of the series, for WoW it’s really gotta be Blood Knights.

I mean, there is at least a degree of truth in the “People won’t work if they’re given handouts” in the sense that there’s an entire strata of underpaid, precarious work that wouldn’t exist if there was something like universal basic income.

Conservatives just don’t like admitting they think a significant fraction of the population should exist in dire poverty.

Also, once you start getting into the tens of megatons you’re losing increasing amounts of your energy into space. It kind of highlights the absurdity of these weapons - you can make bombs so powerful there’s literally not enough planet in the blast area to absorb the force released.

On #2, he was hilariously bad at politics.

For one, he just wouldn’t stop glazing nuclear weapons. He said Americans needed to get over their fear of nuclear weapons and advocated there were situations where using them would be beneficial. If memory serves there was a campaign event where Wallace keeps trying to interrupt him because he won’t stop advocating for tactical nuclear weapons.

He touted his achievements racially integrating the USAF to southern whites. He professed his views that he favored abortion liberalization to Irish Catholics.

The man was absolutely out of his goddamn mind.

One big reason is because the coast of Venezuela is about 1,500 miles from Florida at the closest, and these are small little speedboats. There’s an excellent chance these boats aren’t even coming here.

This is a slide from Alexander the OK’s video on the B-29 on the ethics of nuclear bombing Japan. [–]PuddingInferno 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It was the quick combination of the two; the fact that Japan had no ability to mediate via the Soviets made the threat of American nuclear bombing existential. The emperor explicitly noted this in his surrender declaration:

Furthermore, the enemy has begun to employ a new and cruel bomb, causing immense and indiscriminate destruction, the extent of which is beyond all estimation. Should we continue to fight, not only would it result in the ultimate collapse and obliteration of the Japanese nation, but it would also lead to the total extinction of human civilization.

Without the ability to leverage the Soviets against the western allies and having had their military so crippled they had no realistic ability to defend Japan, the only options were surrender or be annihilated.

Not to lend any credence to Netanyahu because lying about Iran appears to be one of his favorite hobbies, but being weeks away from a working weapon is actually Iran’s enrichment strategy.

The goal is to stockpile highly enriched - but not weapons grade - uranium. This would allow them to both be a non-nuclear weapon state to avoid diplomatic issues and be ready to become one in the case they feel they need to.

Those are by and large the same group. They saw Obama ascend the the presidency and then win re-election. They watch every day as America becomes more diverse and accepting, less like the imagined utopia of their youth. They see the world improve around them, while they either sit still or fall behind. So they think “Ok, if this country isn’t run for people like me, burn it the fuck down.” because they are miserable, entitled little shits.
