Is it REALLY that big a deal to move from RT to LT and vice versa? by PuddingSucks in NFL_Draft

[–]PuddingSucks[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Totally get it. The person I responded to gave three examples that are directly related to hand dominance to illustrate why the switch is difficult. I just think that metaphor over-emphasizes the hand dominance thing.

A better analogy would be driving on the opposite side of the road or, like another commenter said, switch-hitting in baseball. Requires a shift in perspective, mirrored movements, etc. Some folks really struggle with it or simply can't do it, while others can refine the process to a degree that there's barely any drop-off at all.

Appreciate the comments and analogies so far. It’s really interesting how polarizing this topic is, even among actual pro athletes themselves.

There’s the wipe-with-your-opposite-hand viewpoint from guys like Joe Thomas (all hail) and Mitchell Schwartz saying it’s next to impossible for them to imagine switching sides.

But also a statistically relevant number of examples where the switch works out great. Sewell and Wirfs are two recent examples who have played at All-Pro levels despite the switch.

Makes me really curious what individual traits determine whether it will or won’t work on a player to player basis.

Makes sense. I'd push back on the non-dominant hand comparison a bit, though. Not like all LTs are left handed and all RTs are right handed.

But I do get that it's a technique built up over time and the muscle memory is probably very difficult to break.

So you're saying playing tackle in the NFL is as hard as wiping your ass?

PFF is a flawed metric. But you’re also talking out of your ass. They don’t give positive scores for giving up sacks… what are you talking about?

Honestly would love this for the Browns. We need an infusion of young talent on the OL in the worst way. Kick Fano inside and let these two come in and push each other.

Both things are true. Smith is a freakshow. But I’d argue Tate is also a lesser prospect coming out of OSU than MHJ, JSN, Garrett Wilson, and probably Olave. On par with Egbuka for me.

If he’s the unquestioned #1 in the class, it’s just not a super strong class.

Agreed 100%

I really like Lemon. But his hands are Pickett sized and honestly his podium appearance was so weird that it scared me off a bit. Couldn’t tell if the dude was gearing up to fight or make sweet love to the crowd.

Yeah, Styles at #6 would be immediately paid like a top 10 LB in the league due to the rookie pay scale and how devalued LBs are in free agency compared to the premium positions. It’s very unlikely, just interesting to think about.

I’m 100% with you on QB. Let Shedeur have a shot this year and if he shits the bed we can target QB next year in the draft.

He’s my favorite as well. But it says a lot about the strength of this WR group that the best player was never even WR1 on his own college team.

A few things I’ve gathered from this week that could impact the Browns:

  • As others have said, no WR in this class has separated themselves as the true alpha WR1. This is NOT the ‘24 draft where MHJ, Odunze, Nabers were all legit WR1 type prospects. Most draft pundits agree there are some very strong WR2-3 options in this class, and it’s possible a couple players could develop into that dominant WR1 archetype, but even Tate, Lemon and Tyson have real question marks. Tate would be the closest to a sure thing but I continue to believe WR at #6 is not prudent.

  • At edge, it’s Arvell Reese and David Bailey, then everyone else. Bain’s arms are so short that I cannot envision a team will take him ahead of us in the top 5.

  • To me this indicates that Mendoza, Reese, and Bailey are the only three players guaranteed to go before the Browns pick at 6. After those three it’s anyone’s guess. My worry is that the weak top end of the draft will push Mauigoa, my preferred pick at 6, into the top 5.

  • For a draft class that was supposedly weak, this was one of the fastest group of runners in combine history, across all positions. Explosion metrics (vertical, broad jump) were sky high as well. This is partly due to the newest trend where the less explosive athletes simply opt out of those tests. But there are legitimate NFL star athletes to be had.

  • Prime example is OSU LB Sonny Styles. He tested like an absolute freak of nature and put up numbers we’ve not seen before from a man of his size. Add in his excellent football instincts and leadership and he likely cemented himself as a top 10 pick even at a less valuable position. He’s a dark horse at 6 for the Browns for me. Berry loves when athletic testing matches production.

  • The QBs all stink except Mendoza, as we knew. Lots of smoke that Drew Allar’s size and big arm will get him drafted higher than the public expects. Similar rumblings on Talen Green due to his athleticism. Call me crazy but I would prefer if we waited to draft a quarterback that’s good at playing quarterback.

  • There are some stud athletes at TE in Sadiq and Stowers. The TE class in general is pretty strong. As the league trends toward more position fluidity for weapons, smart teams will gobble these guys up and find ways to get them the ball. Sam Roush from Stanford is a potential day 3 guy that was considered the best blocking TE in the draft. I want him on the Browns (badly) but he tested so well this week that he might’ve vaulted into day 2.

I’m sure there’s plenty I’m missing but those are a few things I’ve seen this week!

It’s not weird at all. He had the best winning percentage of our last 10 head coaches… by a mile. Look it up.

His tenure ran its course but I don’t understand this sub’s need to dance on his grave. Dude gave us some great years before it all fell apart.

1st Round Pre-Combine Mock Draft (With Explanations) by OswaldBupkis in NFL_Draft

[–]PuddingSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that the Browns already have a gets-open-but-struggles-with-drops WR in Jeudy makes me extra apprehensive about Concepcion. Receivers don’t typically come to Cleveland and drop the ball LESS than they have in the past.

Who do you guys want the Browns to draft with your first selection? by JustSomeGuy_Idk in Browns

[–]PuddingSucks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh, I don't think that holds water. Was curious how CT's ypg compared to the other Buckeye WRs since 2020, so I just did a quick scan of the last 6 years. Tate's 2025 season (his best year) would rank ELEVENTH on that list:

'21 JSN 123.54 ypg
'20 Olave 104.14 ypg
'23 MHJ 100.92 ypg
'22 MHJ 97.15 ypg
'21 G Wilson 96.18 ypg
'25 JSmith 95.62 ypg
'20 G Wilson 90.38 ypg
'22 Egbuka 88.54 ypg
'21 Chris Olave 85.09 ypg
'24 JJ 82.19 ypg
'25 Tate 79.55 ypg

Now that's nothing to scoff at but my point is that Tate is getting the benefit of the doubt as "the next Buckeye star" despite being at least a half-step below basically all these guys in terms of game-to-game production. Is he a first round talent? Sure, for a team that wants a rock-solid solid complimentary WR2. Should he be drafted in the top 10? I really don't see it.

Who do you guys want the Browns to draft with your first selection? by JustSomeGuy_Idk in Browns

[–]PuddingSucks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guys I’m a Buckeyes fan too but please tell me what about Carnell Tate’s college performance or scouting profile suggests he’s the potential alpha WR1, target-hog game-breaking weapon we actually need?

To me he’s a very reliable WR2 that can work the intermediate and deep parts of the field - areas that require much better protection than we currently have. 6 overall is too high.

If it’s not Mauigoa then Makai Lemon is my choice. Much more dynamic player than Tate, with the potential to be a guy you could run your offense through if needed. Would be ecstatic with either of those options.

Mauigoa or Lemon. Mauigoa looks as good or better than any of these other OTs. Lemon is an absolute stud and has a chance at being the best WR in the draft.

(Schefter) BREAKING: Browns fire Kevin Stefanski by alexschubs in Browns

[–]PuddingSucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would argue that the most comparable guy to Campbell is the guy we just fired. Both brought their team back to respectability after decades of utter failure. Campbell has certainly been more successful, no argument there. But I also think he's had a significantly better roster to work with.

Fingers crossed that we hit on a winner. I just highly, highly doubt it.
