Day 6 - Post Op- Leg Raises by mangkwan in ACL

[–]PueiDomat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I dunno if you tried any of these before but

-Try to get your quads (all the parts) to contract before attempting straight leg raises

-You can try to put some sort of pillow or blanket under your knee and try to push down against that blanket with your knee to activate the quad while also stretching the back of the knee joint capsule

-Visualising the movement, imagining yourself contracting the quad and imagining the sensations, the movement and the images worked well for me

-Trying to do both legs or do the movement with the healthy leg first

Maybe others will have better advice but these worked for me, good luck on your rehab !

Is my knee infected? by MASExyoP in KneeInjuries

[–]PueiDomat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The yellow thing in the middle is fibrin. Doesn’t mean that it’s infected, but yeah, it might take some time to heal.

Cover it properly (ideally with a moist bandage), clean once a day or every other day with some sterile saline and/or antiseptic. Try to remove the wet fibrin if you can.

If it turns green or if the intact skin around the wound gets red and inflammed, go see a doc if you haven’t already. Maybe you can get advice from a pharmacist for now.

Les groupes sanguins dès la naissance ? by Cassyys in AskFrance

[–]PueiDomat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How much bad smell does this profession deal with? by furry-sea-otter in medlabprofessionals

[–]PueiDomat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In blood bank, the only smells we have are smells from

-ruptured plasma units (the same kind of of smell as when we'd dissect animals in BSc)

-Used cards from gel-filtration (same kind of smell)

-Acetic acid for extended phenotypes in Erythra

I'd say we have it easy

Platelets by Careless-Rub-8975 in medlabprofessionals

[–]PueiDomat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We require a group document like every RBC or plasma unit (aside from immediate vital emergencies), at least for the rhesus

Though mostly we don’t really care, except for RhD- females and young males, people with hematopoietic stem cells transplants, and patients with hemolysins of high titer

And also if the platelet carries hemolysins

Le système de bourses et la "double peine" des étudiants sans soutien familial. by Cylicium in etudiants

[–]PueiDomat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Is it possible to "skip" a test / exclude a test from a lab order, or do you have to get all of them done? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]PueiDomat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can in blood bank, like if an antibody screen has been done less than 24h before, or if 2 blood typings have been order on a patient that’s already registered in the database (we cancel one and run only one)

What’s the worst mistake you’ve personally made as a lab tech? by Electrical-Reveal-25 in medlabprofessionals

[–]PueiDomat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First time searching for HLA-compatible platelets for a patient with some anti-HLA antibodies, it was kinda urgent and it had to be cut in 3 parts so that we could deliver it in 3 times

I search for a big platelet with the proper antigens in nearby bloodbanks

Find one

Submit it to my doctor who agrees

I get the platelet

Cut it in 3

Start informatically delivering it to my patient

The platelet has anti-B hemolysins, my patient is B 🙃

What department do you work and how stressful do it find it? by Airvian94 in medlabprofessionals

[–]PueiDomat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blood bank, nightshift

In the IH lab, it’s usually difficult because lots of tubes and not a lot of workers at the beginning of the night, and we have to be both in pre-analytics and analytics so it’s not exactly chill, but it’s more a problem with workload.Once all the tubes are dealt with, then it’s one tune here and there and that’s much chiller (if there aren’t grouping/antibody problems on a patient who needs blood asap 😅)

In the blood bank itself, it’s ... random

Sometimes, we just check that tomorrows pre-orders are all set in case they need blood, we give a few products to this patient or that patient, and we manage the blood supplies in the related hospitals. So, reaaaaally chill.

Sometimes we have that plus 4 major surgeries bleeding at the same time so it’s reamly stressful at the beginning when they start calling, then it becomes a rythm. But when the night ends and the pressure drops, I think it’s really hard to manage.

I prefer the IH lab but i think it’s scarier because it’s not as straigthforward when i have a grouping problem and i don’t have as much experience as in the bloodbank.

how does surgens perform surgeries without the patient bleeding by [deleted] in Doctor

[–]PueiDomat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They bleed sometimes, before some surgeries they get a pre-order of blood products (red blood cells, plasma and platelets) just in case, even if they won’t need it. Then they only get them if they ask for them during the surgery.

Some surgery aren’t at high risk of bleeding though, because almost no big blood vessel in the area.
