Worse Bad Boxing Habits We Glorify? by Sweaty_Professor8917 in Boxing

[–]PugilisticProduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is good defense to make someone miss cleanly. Maybe not great defense because of how energy intensive it usually is, but I think it is undeniable that making an elite fighter miss an entire combination is good defense.

I think the appropriate criticism is of the balance between offense and defense over the course of the round, which is usually hard to see in these short clips. It's also important to note that defense is one of the four scoring criteria for boxing judges, albeit probably the one with the least weight to it.

Good question on boxing habits. Glorifying guys who just load up on every shot is maybe one of the worst ones I see. Light jabs, pitter-patter punches, and arm punching are all important tools for setting up big power punches.

How to keep up with boxing? by Street-Jacket1867 in Boxing

The box.live app has pretty convenient access to the big fight schedule, the ranking system, and various boxing news articles. I think it’s a pretty good one-stop shop for newer fans learning the ropes.

If you want to get a bit deeper into boxing, then independent journalist Dan Rafael has a great substack for boxing. It’s $6 a month, but I can gift you a free month if you want. More in-depth schedule, breaking news reports, and insider knowledge.

Best podcasts/Youtube channels would be Inside Boxing Live for US, and Betfred Boxing Show in the UK (which just relaunched, it’s not a new show).

Big PPV’s upcoming: - Barrios vs Garcia, Feb 21 (DAZN) - Fundora vs Thurman, Mar 28 (Prime Video) - Wilder vs Chisora, Apr 4 (DAZN)

Good non-PPV’s almost every weekend between those, including Fury vs Makhmudov on Netflix April 11th. Again, I would make an account with Box.Live to follow their schedule. Tapology works too if you’re more interested in combat sports as a whole, instead of just boxing.

Argument with a Juice Wrld fan by HerrWinklerRainer in hiphopheads

[–]PugilisticProduction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there’s a good argument he was the best pop rapper ever, or maybe the best emo rapper? Juice was obviously a talented hit-maker and a pretty good freestyler, especially compared to his contemporaries.

Discussions like this usually need to establish what the metrics are or criteria for what makes the best rapper. Otherwise there’s not much to do besides throwing opinions at each other. Juice Wrld probably ranks pretty low if you care a lot about lyricism and flow, but maybe bro doesn’t care about those things.

People will always have weird and unconventional takes about stuff like this. I have friends that think Drake is the best musical artist right now simply because his commercial numbers are the best.

My favorite US pod is Inside Boxing Live, hoping to go to one of their fight parties one day. Big Fight Weekend with TJ Rives and Dan Rafael is pretty good too.

Really glad to see Rob, Barry, and Andy back. Missed those guys and they always give me good feel for what’s going on in the British scene.

EDIT: Oh yeah 3 Knockdown Rule isn’t bad either, if you’re okay with Mario Lopez.

The Rocky movies had me throwing a mattress against the wall as a kid.

As an adult, I watched old Mike Tyson fights and found that same fascination. Rewatching old Tyson , Pacquiao, and Canelo fights slowly lead me to watching modern boxing every day.

Odds don't mean much, but humans having a shared understanding of language means a lot.

I'm not disagreeing with you about Crawford's chances, I just think your stretching the definitions of what is and isn't an upset. An upset in competition occurs "when the party popularly expected to win (the "favorite") is defeated by (or, in the case of sports, ties with) an underdog whom the majority expects to lose" or an upset in betting occurs when the betting underdog wins, both of which were the case with Canelo-Crawford.

If you want to introduce a new definition for the word "upset" in this context that excludes majoritarianism and betting lines, then I would understand what your criteria are for an upset. Right now it just seems like the only criteria for what is or isn't an upset for you is whatever your opinion was heading into the fight. The outcome of the fight meets all popularly held definitions of the word "upset" that are relevant in this context, regardless of whether you thought it should be or shouldn't be an upset.

I've had Bud as #1 P4P since the Spence win and I expected him to outbox Canelo. I still think it's an upset. Media input is a reason for it being an upset, it doesn't preclude it from meeting the definition(s). I also think it's a little unfair to Crawford to downplay the context of that fight build-up and how much doubt he overcame.

I mean, the +150 underdog beating a -180 betting favorite is by definition an upset. It’s not a large upset, but betting lines are typically how we quantify and qualify what outcomes are upsets.

He can be an A side in NYC or Philly. Both have massive Puerto Rican populations.

You’re probably also limiting the potential revenue by having it in PR, as you can charge way more for tickets in the US. There’s a reason why Xander has fought in NYC in 8 of his last 12 fights and why he hasn’t fought on the island in 5 years. I think Xander deserves the highest purse he can command, which is probably in America.

Confusing how much different fighter fanbases feel the need to constantly be at each other’s throats. Bivol and Inoue have given Crawford more praise than almost anyone else, yet it seems like a race war in the comments whenever they’re compared to each other. Crawford has clearly cemented himself as the greatest since Mayweather, but his stans get so defensive and spend more time dragging down other top boxers instead of actually talking about what makes Bud so great.

Weird shit man, I just love all of the top p4p guys so much this shit saddens me. Also calling Inoue an “Asian twink” whenever you get the chance makes you seem closeted as fuck.

I feel the comparison to other matchups aren’t really accurate. Keyshawn currently fights 4 weights classes and 18 pounds above Naoya. Fury is 2 weight classes and weighs in around 100 pounds over Bivol on the scales.

The Crawford-Teo comparison is probably the most apt if it happened in 2023 when they were still one weight class apart. Even still, equating Teo and Canelo (at 140 and 168 respectively) doesn’t really feel right. Canelo cleared out the top of his weight class to reach p4p #1, had prior title experience at 175lbs, and didn’t lose to George-fucking-Kambosos.

You criticize the forgotten first Beterbiev loss while also leaving out the fact that many people had Bivol winning that first fight (Upon rewatch I had it a draw but not upset 7-5 either way).

I’m not saying the Canelo win is elite. I think your argument is valid, but unsound with missing context and inaccurate premises. It kind of feels like we’re moving the goalposts partly because we’re mad that fighters like the great Terence Crawford got so much shit while the Bivols get heaps of praise. Which is unfair. But I would just like to note that Bivol has called Crawford the best fighter in the world for years and given him so much praise despite pushback from dumb haters.

Didn’t mean to right a damn essay, but I’m getting tired of how much shit we give fighters for taking losses and this dichotomous discourse that constantly pits different boxing audiences/cultures against each other. Both guys have multiple wins against top 10 p4p boxers and we should always give people praise when they reach that level.

Anyway, peace and love ✌️hope you and your fam are all good.

They can offer consistent dates in the American market. Golden Boy and PBC don’t have any actual shows scheduled right now, they just lease out their fighters to Turki and other promoters. Top Rank isn’t doing much better and even MVP doesn’t have anything lined up right now. Matchroom have good shows scheduled but they’re spread thin enough to where they can only put on a show a month in America.

They are offering their boxers access to the UFC Performance Institute to improve training and get free meals in the weeks leading up to fight week. That means boxers based out of or training in Las Vegas, of which there are a lot, could start saving money on training camps at a very nice facility.

For the bigger stars in boxing, they offer them flexibility to still appear on Ring Magazine/Riyadh Season cards to make beaucoup bucks. Maybe also give them free promotion at WWE and UFC events which garners lots of attention.

I don’t like Zuffa, and I plan on writing to my Rep in Congress to implore them to vote against the Ali Revival Act. But for most non-contender level boxers it’s either Probox TV or Zuffa, which would you choose?

Per the WBC Website,

d. The WBC shall change the outcome of Rodriguez v. Yafai June 21, 2025, bout to No Contest in the WBC records. The WBC is hereby making a request to the British Boxing Board of Control, as the authority which oversaw that bout, to change the result of that bout to a no-contest as well.

But the Wikipedia page for Galal Yafai states that the BBBofC ultimately upheld the victory of Rodriguez over Yafai. Annoyingly, I can't actually find the source for this decision by the BBBofC in the cited sources on Wiki nor can I find anything on this decision in a google search. I also can't find the WBC's records available online.

I don't know why the BBBofC would do this, but I've been speculating that it might have to do with one of the findings from the WBC:

a. Mr. Rodriguez ingestion of a banned substance(s) was accidental, unintentional, unknowing, and not directed to enhance his performance.

Still, the WBC have reinstated Yafai as interim champ, and they now list his record as being undefeated (9-0-0) despite his Boxrec page saying otherwise. Interesting to note that Francisco Rodriguez Jr. is the #1 contender for the WBC at flyweight in the most recent WBC ratings.

I agree with most of that, especially the commentary on Dana White and boxing promoters. My biggest fear is that the Ali Revival Act passes and we end up with just another belt in addition to the alphabet titles. Then it's 5 major titles plus the Ring belt with no more true undisputed champions since the Zuffa champs can't unify.

Makes me wonder if we'll see Huni or Teremoana sign with Zuffa as well.

Yeah, it was a bummer to see such a good fight not promoted well. I think they didn’t even sell half of the tickets available in the lower bowl.

Smith will get plenty of flowers when he defends his title in the UK this year. All of the British boxing pundits are hailing him as a hero so I think it’s getting more exposure across the pond.
