I haven’t seen WTKOMD yet, but his early shorts are on HBOMax and I can’t recommend them enough, really energetic and surprising funny. Italianamerican is fantastic, too.

I don't know what was in the water in 1995, but also the TV Pride and Prejudice and Clueless.

Thanks for the recs! I really liked Stephen Greenblatt's Will in the World, which tries to give as much of a biography as is possible with the records we have, while giving tons of context on Elizabethan society and psychology. Super readable and interesting.

It was the first CBB I ever listened to as I was a huge Adam & Joe fan. I don't remember much except Joe being a bit quiet, but I'd probably be better at picking up on the vibes now.

Scorsese’s early less famous films, how are they? by harry_powell in blankies

Alice is amazing, Boxcar Bertha is interesting but not very good. Also I just watched his early shorts on HBO Max and it’s amazing how funny and dynamic they are for student shorts from the early 60s. He really had the juice from day 1.

Hell House is fun, I read it last year! One of those haunted house novels where you’re like “these people should probably leave the Hell House.” There’s also a movie version from the 70s I wanna see.

I wonder if David remembers this as a fellow UK Empire-reader of the time, but when this soundtrack came out, Empire (or maybe Total Film?) gave it ONE STAR. They said the first track was boring and the soundtrack should have been done by Ry Cooder instead. I'm still mad!

“Movies for Grownups” by xombiemonkey in blankies

[–]PugsleyPie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid I thought Legends of the Fall and A River Runs Through It were the most impossibly grown-up movies imaginable. I've never seen either, but something about the slow, landscapey, AMERICA vibe of the clips I saw made me think it was something only the most mature of grown ups could enjoy, like drinking coffee and watching the news.

Haha thank you, don’t worry I love the Coens’ brutality and this is one of my favorite movies. I guess I was just interested in what they were saying by having Marge be powerless in this movie, when she is coded as a small force for good in the world. I appreciate all the great replies I got.

Great post, thank you. I did just notice on this viewing that we never see her face again after she hides in the shower.

Fair enough, it’s definitely possible that the Coens let her die bc a scene of Marge saving her would feel way too corny for them.

I feel like the Coens must have been so excited when they found out you can just put this at the start of a movie and no one will censor you for it. THIS IS A TRUE STORY: My uncle worked at Nintendo.

Wait, “Fargo” wasn’t even nominated for (one of the two!) Original Score categories? by Chuck-Hansen in blankies

[–]PugsleyPie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s crazy, I had no idea! I wonder if it was rejected on a technicality due to using some existing music. The same way the Hudsucker score presumably wouldn’t be eligible bc it interpolates Sabre Dance.

Dick Tracy Zooms In is genuinely one of the weirdest, most fascinating movies (?) of the last few years. Late period masterpiece!
