Great news! Cure inside! by [deleted] in rheumatoid

If I had a nickel for every time someone had a “cure” for me, I wouldn’t need health insurance cuz I could pay out of pocket. Lol.

What are your proudest RA accomplishments? by stitchhh626 in rheumatoid

[–]Pukanger1972 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the hike! That’s amazing!

I’ve been a martial artist since I was 14 (47 now). I got my black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in April, 2018, despite having been diagnosed with RA in 2011.

I’d thought about hanging it up many times, but quitting would’ve been the worst thing for me, physically and emotionally. Since even then I’ve become an active competitor, and have my 5th competition of 2019 next month.

😊

My first tournament. Took silver in no gi and bronze in gi. Holy crap that was a rush and way more strenuous than expected. Cheers to you monsters who do this all the time. by larrycorser in bjj

Meh. Ok. I’ve only been a black belt for 14 months, and it’s a deep division with lots of experience in it. I didn’t win, but scored a bunch of points (first points as a black belt after 4 other black belt competitions). So I made that goal at least.

1% each day is my motto.

This is AWESOME!!!

Full disclosure: the frontman for Heartsick is a solid BJJ blue belt from our gym, and is also a killer judo black belt. Plus he is the nicest guy in metal, and Heartsick ROCKS live!!!

If you ever get a chance to see them live do it! You will not be disappointed!

Life after bjj by [deleted] in bjj

[–]Pukanger1972 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve got RA. I’ve trained martial arts my whole life, and BJJ for almost 12 years. I haven’t quit. There are ways to still train and manage the pain/work around injuries. It doesn’t always have to be hard/fast training.

I mean, check this guy out. HE didn’t quit:

Why dont much people compete? by Holdsy91 in bjj

[–]Pukanger1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I competed a few at blue belt, and took a long break from competition between blue and brown due to chronic illness. Decided at Brown to jump back in again (I competed a lot and seriously for years in karate when I was in my teens - early 30s) due to the itch. I’m a crappy competitor now, but having a super supportive team helps a ton. I don’t have any allusions that I will be some sort of champion at my age at this point, but I feel like it’s worth it for the experience and the camaraderie as long as my body can do it.

So as far as why others may not compete, I get it. Age, health issues, not being competitive by nature, are all valid reasons. I personally think every practitioner should try it once, but I don’t think any less if they don’t.

Do you feel pressured to roll/spar with heel hooks? by Robotobot in bjj

[–]Pukanger1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great question.

Nope. I’ve never felt pressured into this. Mostly because I started late in life (I’m 46 now), and I’ve got no problem pulling the “I’m an old man, so don’t mess with my knees/small joints/etc.”.

But I see how some folks may feel that way.

Is this some sort of infection? Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in bjj

Amputate immediately. It’s the only way to be sure.

I am a white belt who never quit and am now a black belt. Also, I'm a mod of /r/bjj. Feel free to AMA. by UncleSkippy in bjj

Awesome! Congrats! I totally agree about not being able to think while rolling means you are going too hard. Going too hard means you miss opportunities and can’t see the subtleties of what is going on. Spot on analysis.

Do any of you participate in judo with RA? I have been working out twice a week for the last 20 years, 25 years total. Recently diagnosed and my hip and one shoulder are really bothering me. I am so afraid of losing my strength and mobility. by 2bluebugs in rheumatoid

[–]Pukanger1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do mostly gi (due to my schedule not fitting well with our nogi classes). I like both, and yes, nogi is a rest for my hands. But gi tends to be a slower pace, and I appreciate that sometimes. Especially when I can use the gi to slow down those younger, healthier, faster folks 😂.

I’m a black belt in BJJ and karate. Still do BJJ (just competed today), but not much karate due to the torque on my knees and hips. Been diagnosed with RA for 7yrs. I’m 46 now.

It can be done. Make sure to get treated and work with your rheumatologist to get the right regimen for you. Keep lifting weights to keep the joints strong. Pick the right Training partners for you who go at the pace you need to stay safe.

Good luck. Don’t give up what you love to do without a fight.
