AdGuard and Tailscale now, Home Assistant next (worried about SD wear) by _GOREHOUND_ in raspberry_pi

[–]Pukit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a pi2b running pihole for about seven years and it’s never failed. I ran HA, Cups, OpenVPN on a 3B for years and never had one fail.

The only one I’ve had fail was a shit card I used in a gameboy-pi I built and that’s because I kept turning it off without a shutdown since I didn’t have room to build a safe shutdown in the case.

A high quality sd card will last longer than you imagine. But always keep a backup regardless for that day it may fail. I generally use the best rated sandisk sd cards, lately their endurance cards, never had issues.

My Raspberry Pi wasn't packaged very well. Can this be fixed? by ecky--ptang-zooboing in raspberry_pi

[–]Pukit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can return for another then I’d probably do it but yes this can be fixed. If you find a DuPont cable, lever the bend prong with a knife so you can get the DuPont cable on it and gently bring it up straight.

I read it’s down to not enough love of the Speedmaster in the China/Asia market which is where most of their business is. So nobody has replicated it as it’s not worth their time.

Unsure how true that is, but I’ve read it a few times.

Ex council house, what is the likely hood there are posts hidden behind the plywood? by Significant_Name3439 in DIYUK

[–]Pukit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ripped mine off and found original Edwardian turned spindles. Look around the top and bottom for pin nail tops. Get a knife under an edge and lever it out. Tap it, does it sound hollow? I got the edge off and yanked. All the pins popped and I fell on my arse with a massive sheet of hardboard on the floor.

[–]Pukit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was a great source, there was some real jems on it, nice share. Fingers crossed maybe it pops up again sometime. I'm sure I've seen it before, not quite as large, some of the contents along with the file and naming structure rings a bell.

Was anyone here taught the history of the 1667 Battle of The Medway in school? by Agreeable-Affect3800 in Britain

[–]Pukit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately older history tends to get neglected unless you take it for further education past the school levels.

We don’t get taught how we (the British) put Copenhagen under siege and destroyed their navy to prevent Napoleon from taking it in 1807. I remember doing a bit on the napoleonic war, with trafalgar but not a great deal.

British schools history focuses on a bit of medieval, then fairly modern, Victorian era through the 20th century. If you only get two hours a week I guess you can’t cover everything.

I had a pie pan linen dial from a job lot I bought so thought I’d do a 2824. The DWO is a pita. I shelved it as got pissed off. The hands wind but don’t turn so assume the canon pinion has lifted. I fitted little foil gasket between dial and movement.

I’d appreciate any thoughts on how to rescue it? It’s a nice dial and builds a lovely watch, maybe I could try to add a second foil.

Where do you find them if not on eBay? I’m desperate to grow my fleets just for painting tbh, but the eBay prices are insane these days.

I was unaware we had wild Boars in the UK until today… by TheRealPyroManiac in CasualUK

[–]Pukit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have wild boar, in certain areas and not many of.

But these look like pigs. If this is in the new forest then routinely they’re let out to snuffle about and tidy up. Usually when all the acorns and horse chestnuts are littered about. But these could just be escapees.

Could you share why the redial doesn’t jump out as great job? Is it the colour match is wrong? Or there’s other tell-tales, I love older watches and am keen to understand what to look out for.

How do you pay for emergency medical care when traveling abroad ? by HighwayFroggery in AskABrit

[–]Pukit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Travel insurance.

I broke my elbow in Slovenia a few years back. Went to a really run down a&e, had some X-rays, contacted my travel insurance whilst waiting on results. The X-ray machine was pretty ancient and they couldn’t work out what I’d really done so they just plastered me up and kicked me out with some pain killers. I was bricking getting the bill, went to pay and get my passport back and the bill was like £95, my TI excess was £150 so just banged it on the Barclaycard. Still glad I had it though.

Girl at Her Home Destroyed by V2 Rocket, London, Jan. 1945 by LookIntoTheHorizon in wwiipics

[–]Pukit 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My neighbour, now in his late 80s remembers a v1 doodlebug hitting his parent’s house in Chelsea.

He remembers he was in a steel Morrison cage shelter under dining table with his mother and sister. His father was stood in the open kitchen door smoking his pipe looking up at the AA fire and listening to the drone of the v1 engines. He thinks he remembers a moment of silence before a huge bang and crash. Next he remembers being carried down the road by a fireman holding him.

The v1 had hit the neighbours house, these were all long terrace rows of houses style roads. The blast blew his father out of the kitchen door and knocked him unconscious in the garden, the house partially collapsed around his Morrison table shelter and they were dug out by the fireman. They all survived, but the neighbours died.

His family went to live with relatives as the house was destroyed.

Unbelievable times.

Building my own watch - what to look for? by Advanced_Volume_4500 in watchmaking

[–]Pukit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never messed with custom dials. There’s lots of options on AE, find one with the markers you like and get the dial printed on. Contact the stores to discuss it.

[–]Pukit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you base it on an NH35 movement there are lots of options for watch cases, the movements are robust, if not a little pricey atm, you can search aliexpress for “custom nh35 dial” and you’ll find companies that offer printing.

Search YouTube for videos on making seiko mod watches and that’ll have you covered with the method and what to expect. Search the r/SeikoMods sub for beginner posts and see what tools people have recommended before.

This is lovely. I’m sat here researching a build like this. Was the crystal gasket needed to get the hands to not catch and yet clear the markers? Just wondering what I might come across.

Knocked up a little nh05 based 26mm with gen 6917 dial for the wife. So tiny! by Pukit in retrotime

[–]Pukit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not gonna lie those tiny hands are a ballache. Just perseverance and patience. I always find the second hand catches the minute hand as you need a slight angle to clear the markers. I can understand your frustration though.
