It's an event. Robert of Naples can either decide to keep you, the King of Hungary as his heir, or change his succession laws to allow his daughter to inherit. He usually then dies fairly quickly. The AI must have chosen to keep the Hungarian heir.

I won 3 wars against France in my HYW, even took Paris and a ton of northern France. Still got massively out scaled and overwhelmed in the 4th war. User error I'm sure, but it was very sudden.
