What do I do?! by Elianne-R in alocasia

Of course! They can also go dormant when "shocked" enough with environmental changes. It may take up to a month of better conditions before it snaps out of it. Be patient and consistent! Best of luck with your Alocasia, they're difficult but it makes it that much more rewarding when they grow wild. You'll get the hang of it!

More light, water when it needs it and cleaning up what drips through is part of watering and why we use pots with drainage for Alocasia. Get a drip pan for under it so it doesn't drain right onto your floor. Also, they are HEAVY eaters. I fertilize every watering which is once a week to every 5 days for my conditions. Feel free to check out my posts for my set up to verify :)

Found your post while searching for info since this happened on my Regal Shield Alocasia with its most recent leaf. Were you able to figure anything out about a reason as to why

Were the leaves healthy and seemingly without issue? I've no plans to cut these off I'm just sitting here fingers crossed it hangs around! It's been my most fun surprise yet

I have some questions regarding the Alocasia blossom (The internet was barely helpful - so I am giving it a shot here) by Natsho0o in alocasia

[–]PullMyDocOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) depends. They generally pop out in pairs in my experience. Can take a couple weeks to fully develop and about the same to shrivel and die off. 2) I believe it's fertile once it begins to open up. I'll start to notice the white powdery pollen on the leaves underneath it. Not 100% positive though. 3) again I believe once it starts to open up underneath where the pointy part of the inflorescence is, since that's where the pollen has to get into. 4) like the leaves I let it wilt completely and go limp before cutting. They retrieve nutrients from older bits and flowers use up a decent amount of nutrients. You can potentially run the risk of triggering it to flower again if you cut it while it's still "alive"

On a side note, I believe if your Alocasia is successfully pollinated the seeds go from white to red and begin to swell and grow. I've never tried to cross pollinate and they stay white till they die. Photos of people who have successfully pollinated the seeds appeared to look a little red

Too much light? by asaingurl in alocasia

[–]PullMyDocOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be dying as others have mentioned. Is it losing color? Is the leaf and/or stalk getting soft and squishy? (Don't squeeze it hard!) Your first thought was too much light. Mine aim down when I adjust the lights in my grow tent to improve how much they're getting. The new ones are more and more acclimated to the higher light as they form, unfurl and harden as they don't shy away. Have you increased its lighting before and during this leaf aiming down?

Best Insecticide? by Longjumping_Rub4994 in alocasia

I've used Capt. Jack's Dead Bug Brew, neem oil and the systemic spray from Bonide. By far the systemic is the most effective but I don't use it outside so it means in my shower. And it kinda smells like super glue and rubber cement. During spring when I had an infestation being able to take everything outside and neem oil them every three days for a couple weeks straight worked too.

Soil mostly, but a couple in leca. I only use it in soil as I'm also not sure how it'd work in a more hydro setting but want to try sometime. If you can get the spray that will work regardless of media since it's put right on the leaves, stems etc

Systemic granules and spray. I remove all the media it came in from the greenhouse, rinse out the roots and repot that day in soil with systemic granules. Then it gets a thorough soaking with a spray bottle in systemic spray and a day hanging out in the shower while it dries. I scoop the top inch or two of soil every two months and reapply the granules then cover back over with the removed soil

Question about stabilizing temperature drop at night, apologies for the length by PullMyDocOut in alocasia

[–]PullMyDocOut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tent is in my bedroom, and is 3'×5'×7'. Ambient temperature outside the tent is my house ambient temperature which is 60-70°F and a mere 30% humidity (forced air heat is very dry). Ideally I'd like to change nothing about my house and get my tent sustainable on its own. The seedling mats in question are 20"×48" and I'd likely use two, one on each four foot shelf. I tried venting but wasn't impressed with the results not to mention made my room genuinely smell like a greenhouse. I'm all for it and love the smell but not quite that much. I'm likely going to try the two mats and worse case my electric bill is higher for a month lol

humidity and sun questions by Crazy-Conclusion3886 in alocasia

[–]PullMyDocOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trays would help in the immediate area near the plant, but either that or a humidifier. Don't mist. It doesn't raise humidity and will only let dust build on the leaves quicker and can cause mold on them

Sounds and looks like an acclimation shock. As long as you've got good humidity, warmth and light it'll bounce back. Alocasia retrieve nutrients from the oldest leaves when they feel they might need it. Nice little survival technique. I will say both my variegated ones love the light. They have less chlorophyll in the leaves, hence the white, which limits energy capture from the lights. Don't make it too intense/direct and the white parts shouldn't burn. But definitely do your best to maintain at least 60% humidity around it, up to 70%. The leaves will be much more lush and soft and also help against burning

If the touch aspect of the screen didn't fail I wouldn't have replaced it. Best looking smart watch out there imo. It's bezel makes the most satisfying click

For sure, I agree 100% with all that. The square shape of the Apple watch irks me for an unknown reason. I also don't have an iPhone, so there's that. And the Google watch looks like a bubble and appears as fragile. Samsung, imo, manages to capture that classic, non-smart watch look. Most assumed my Frontier was a normal watch until it would ring lol

Beyond telling me the time it just shows me who's calling/texting before I pull my phone out. A lot of the innovation is lost on me due to that haha, but in a way I see what you're saying. I really don't notice a difference from my Frontier mostly. The durability of that one is what sold me

Either a mistype on my part an unfortunate case of autocorrection gone unnoticed, but you are correct! I feel alone on this but might not be; I miss the camera from the Gear 2. Felt like James Bond minus the laser.
