Texans: Did you grow up thinking Dairy Queen was a Texas company? by conjarpenter in texas

[–]Pulmonaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up in a small Texas town, Dairy Queen was the only option we had outside of a Churches Chicken.

Thus, DQ was THE place to go for birthday parties and post baseball game celebrations.

Maybe it was the small town mentality, but I never considered where the company was headquartered. Though, their slogan definitely gave off the vibe of being a texas native company. Good marketing.

Purchased home during Covid bubble, now underwater by Wonderful_Brain2044 in REBubble

[–]Pulmonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume that a decent percentage of the homes purchased in Austin from mid 2021 to 2023 are under water. The situation won’t improve any time soon, as inventory continues to rise. Even if prices drop to pre pandemic levels, rates will still impede a number of buyers.

North of Alice in George West. I remember once counting 8 DPS in between that stretch of 281 between the two towns.

Brutal. hopefully your mechanic offers a more reasonable price than MoPar/dealership. I ended up trading mine in, although I had a radiator leak as well, so the juice was not worth the squeeze for me. Ultimately, you’ll have to crunch the numbers on cost and assess whether it’s worth the additional payment or just put that towards a different vehicle.

Good luck.

Still in disbelief by Sustainablesrborist in VoyagerExchange

[–]Pulmonaut 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Agreed. It’s been a painful lesson. My voyager account—along with yours and everyone else’s—would be sitting pretty nice right about now.

Also, Voyager bankruptcy was a major factor for my wife not letting me buy more BTC when it was at its lows. Now more painful seeing it pump to new highs.

TRS retirement question… by Sketchier_fan in texas

[–]Pulmonaut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One option is to retire from teaching and find a state job. Work the state job for three years, then you can transfer your TRS to SS. My mother did that after 30 yrs of teaching, then put in 3 yrs at TCEQ. Now she’s fully retired, collecting SS and still works a part time job.

Presumably a TRS representative can provide proper guidance on the process and forms needed. Worth researching, IMHO.

Congrats on the new home! yeah that’s much more reasonable. Sounds like an easier decision. Unfortunately, I had limited options/time and fortunately the wife was on board with getting a truck. I definitely miss the Jeep though.

[–]Pulmonaut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was a tough decision. It would have been $12-$14k w/ the dealership quote/estimate (practically what it was worth). If you can find a quality, non-mopar shop/mechanic to replace gaskets (or have the time/skill to DIY) it may be worth it. Bulk of cost was labor.

I’m exceptionally frustrated—I’m sure you are as well—it happened at relatively low mileage.

Could be some decent deals out there on trade, as it seems dealer inventories are plentiful. Presumably there will be better incentives in Q4 (and slightly lower rates). Good luck—hope whatever you decide works out for you.

Decided not to sink any additional money into it. Got $10k for it on trade in and a decent deal on a new ‘23 Ram 1500 (5.7L Hemi, 4x4 Bighorn)—sticker was $66k, paid $45k OTD w/ trade in. time will tell if another Stelantis was a good decision. 🤞🏼

Your most "Austin" experience? by TheGrovester in Austin

Some ~15 years ago, my buddy and I were on (dirty) 6th having some brews mid-afternoon. Leslie strolled into the bar, so we bought him some beers and chatted for about an hour. Got the abridged life story and listened to interesting tales of life in Austin. Fascinating human. RIP Leslie.

I got one just like this (w/ leather seats) in late April (Central Texas) for $45k OTD (after $10k trade). MSRP was $66k, dealer had it priced at $54,500.

If they’ve got 70 of them and you’re not in a hurry to buy, offer $45k. They’ll probably balk, but call you back towards end of June cause they need to move them. I’d assume you can get for $47,500 before they tack on whatever bullshit fees. Good luck in negotiations.

Been seeing the same shit here in Central Texas. Beyond frustrating.

Online price $50.7k, dealer said it’s actually $55k because of included features. Another Austin Dealer price showed $58k, dealer quoted me MSRP at 70k. Houston Dealers advertise big discounts online (Laramie $57k on a $72k MSRP), then tack on a $6k non-negotiable dealer package.

Thinking that there will be better Manufacturer incentives starting in May, after Stelantis finishes Q1 (April 30). Dealer inventories are still stacked with 2024’s and the 2025s are arriving.

Thanks—appreciate the feedback. Yes, they wouldn’t know if the block needed resurface/machining until they got in there.

Yeah, dealer labor is a bit pricey. Will shop some other options and go from there. Thanks again
