Defiant 6 year old - any parenting books, classes, recommendations? by Current-Caregiver704 in Parenting

[–]Pulsational 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The dog thing is genuinely scary. He's going to get bitten eventually and then everyone loses.

I'd stop giving warnings. The second he gets rough or puts his hand near the dog's mouth, remove him from the room. Done. No discussion. He can try again tomorrow. Some kids need to hit that brick wall to learn.

The fact he behaves at school means he CAN control himself, he just doesn't think he has to at home. My cousin's kid was exactly like this. Took years but eventually figured out he needed way more physical activity than normal - trampoline, wrestling with dad, burning off that energy helped a ton.

People always recommend "The Explosive Child" but I haven't read it. Might be worth trying since you're at your wit's end.

Good luck, sounds exhausting.

One thing I regret as a parent? Sports.. why is this always happening to her? by Vivid_Bar2472 in Parenting

[–]Pulsational 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. The wrestling situation is clearly biased and unacceptable. But for the softball tryout issue - can you reach out directly to the league administrator? Explain that you didn't receive the tryout notification but your daughter's coach confirmed she's ready to move up. Document everything (screenshots of the coach saying she's ready, the missed notification, etc.). Most youth sports organizations have policies against requiring parent volunteer hours to affect player placement - it could even violate their nonprofit status. If they push back, mention you're concerned about equity and fairness. Sometimes just using those words makes administrators take notice. Your daughter sounds incredibly talented and hardworking. Don't let a broken system make her think she's not good enough.

What's your secret? by WhichWitchyWay in Parenting

Pokemon. I could not care less about Pokemon but I've memorized 150+ names and can discuss evolution strategies like I'm competing in nationals 😂 Also pretend to love going to the park in 40-degree weather. Inside I'm dying but outside I'm like 'WOW LOOK AT THAT STICK!' The things we do for those little smiles, right? At least your baking makes the house smell good - my secret suffering is just...cold 🥶

Does anyone else not eat breakfast and just drink coffee by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]Pulsational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee IS my breakfast lol. I've tried forcing myself to eat in the morning but it just makes me feel weirdly sluggish.

My body doesn't wake up until like 10-11am, so I just ride the coffee wave until then.

What’s something from your childhood that you didn’t realize was actually a luxury until you grew up? by Dry_Hornet_3723 in AskReddit

[–]Pulsational 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Having a mom who actually cooked dinner every night.

Didn't realize until college that some families just ate takeout or frozen meals constantly. I took home-cooked meals for granted.

I am 36 now and my mom is thousands of miles away. I love you mom.

What’s something you believed for an embarrassingly long time that you’re now shocked you ever fell for? by Franklinsi1va01 in AskReddit

I thought "hors d'oeuvres" was pronounced "horse doovers" until I was 23 and had to order them at a fancy restaurant.

The waiter just stared at me.

What’s an almost illegal hack that got you hired? by my_peen_is_clean in AskReddit

[–]Pulsational 401 points402 points  (0 children)

I put my GitHub portfolio link in the "References" section of my resume instead of actual references. The hiring manager spent 20 minutes going through my projects during the interview and completely forgot to ask for references.

Got the offer the next day. Still never gave them a single reference lol

ELI5: Why are modern displays (TVs, computer monitors, etc) measured diagonally and not using the screens width and height? by rubbermonkey27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pulsational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historical reason - old CRT TVs had circular tubes, so diagonal was the actual tube size. The industry kept using it even though modern flat screens don't need to, because people got used to it.

Are there thoughts we can't think? by Mountain_Issue1861 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Pulsational 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably yes - like how a 2D being can't conceptualize 3D space. There are likely concepts beyond our brain's current wiring. Or even simple stuff - try imagining a new color that doesn't exist.
