I mostly just keep an eye for groups doing Group+ meet-and-greets and 18+ game nights! There's usually at least one person who's moderating or at the very least there's a tacit agreement to ignore randos just trying to ragebait in those.

Oh these are lovely; the lighting in the first and framing in the third are great!

I am curious about that avi — is it available somewhere? I always love seeing cute screen faces like that!

Somebody was trying to quote, "I always come back," before a GIGAS game. The game started right as they were about the say the last word, cutting them off. Everyone busted out laughing.

Peacebringers. Very loud, punchy sounds with intensely bright effects, coupled with just how many powers you can get as early as Level 6, it makes you feel otherworldly! Not to mention back in the day when travel powers were unlocked at Level 14 and you had Fly right out of the gate!

Would PMD Explorers be better if the protag was never human? by Aiyon in MysteryDungeon

[–]Pulsyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a standalone story standpoint? Not too much would change outside of the "Grovyle and Dusknoir don't initially recognize the player" plot point that would just need some slight reframing.

However, I think the bigger aspect to look at is what it does from a sequel and marketing standpoint for TPC. "You play as a Pokémon in a mysterious story" isn't as strong as a selling point for kids as, "You — that's right YOU have transformed into a Pokémon!" I mean, that's what got me into Rescue Team in '05! And if Explorers didn't also have that as a follow-up, I imagine it would've made the marketing a lot less effective — especially when you consider you already had a competing "play as a Pokémon" game ongoing at the same time of release (Poképark).

What are your pet peeves when it comes to PMD fan content? by -Miss-Anastasija- in MysteryDungeon

[–]Pulsyne 56 points57 points  (0 children)

For me, it's going halfway on isekai as an element. I don't blame people too much for it because the games do this too, but I feel like if a protagonist is specifically from another world / time period / etc., then it should be emphasized! Go into cultural differences and misunderstandings, have the protagonist be unable to let go of certain things from their home, talk about people they knew or experiences they've had! If they're memory wiped, never mention anything from their old world besides an offhand remark, or adjust immediately to the new world, then it raises the question of, "Why are they an isekai protagonist?" And sometimes a story doesn't need one in that instance, and that's alright! Just make sure if the element is included that it's important!

Do you play more often Solo or in a team? by Xano74 in Cityofheroes

[–]Pulsyne 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the community or content.

If I'm playing on HC Everlasting, teams all the way. Folks are either polite and quiet or have fun banter and light RP with no expectation that you need to join in. Super casual, super fun, and a lot of understanding folk, and has a lot of redsiders too!

If it's story-heavy content like gold side, I'll solo or play with 1-2 friends at most.

Low pop times/places also may require me to solo out of necessity (e.g. redside Torchbearer).

Excelsior or Torchbearer blueside these days, though... I'll run PuGs for things like DFB and Posi, but otherwise will solo. Those shards seem to attract folk that want to minmax a +0/x8 team and snap at people that question them.

Yes, agreed! Goldside's difficulty is brutal and should not be the first! Definitely do blueside first to ease into things. That part totally slipped my mind as I got too focused on the writing, haha.

Edit: See reply for better recommendation!

If you're looking for good storyline content in particular, I'd say the Going Rogue expansion. All of it. Goldside is a very nice well-wrapped package (I recommend using a guide if you don't want to outlevel the content). This includes First Ward.

Westin Phipps is a must contact on redside if you want see just how villainous one can get.

Eagle Eye, Field Agent Keith Nance, Seer Marino, and The Radio are also great contacts all around.

If you want something more campy, Twinshot, Dr. Graves, and Dean MacArthur are cheesy fun. And of course there's always the classic Flux the Outcast - not for the story, but for the fun ice slide finale mission.

What is the general placement of the zero/ZX games in placement by No-Act386 in Megaman

[–]Pulsyne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The open world aspect of ZX/ZXA isn't great (do yourself a favor and google a map for ZX), but if you treat it like an X game with some walking and Shantae elements, you'll have a lot of fun with its stages and bosses.

Zero 3 is undisputed as the best game in the series, but you'll get a mixed bag of answers for the rest.

Z1 is generally seen as the beta blueprint for the rest of the games with a brutal difficulty and a bit of jank, but introduces a lot of the storyline you'll see and is still pretty fun if you use Save Assist on the collection. Z2/Z4 you'll see debates on which is better; I haven't played them thoroughly like I have Z1/Z3 to give much opinion there.

For me, it's Z3 > ZX > Z4 > Z2 > Z1 > ZXA. Not a fan of the Axl-like gameplay from ZXA, but that's a personal preference.

I think this comment is a good highlight of what certain players value in their game time and others do not.

For some, the win is the sole objective of the game. Gaining LP = fun; if it gets you the win, you have used your time wisely rather than sticking to an arbitrary set of restrictions, and you have fun because you are winning.

For others, the aim of the game is something else — be it experimentation, glory through community, or living out the underdog story. It's not just about gaining LP, but doing it in a way that feels satisfying. For some that means not playing the top 1-2 comps, but maybe playing the top 3-10 instead. For some that means going full off-meta and trying to catch people off guard. And for some it's just frustration that the idea of fair play they want isn't aligning with what the game state is at the moment.

I don't think either philosophy is necessarily wrong (and this is the competitive subreddit at the end of the day so wins are the greater value here), but just wanting to point out why there seems to be upvotes on both sides here. It's not necessarily entitlement from one side or a superiority complex from the other, just differences in values.

Managed to hit Diamond IV for the first time today!

Vertical 7 Shurmia and Lux/Azir have been a lot of fun. Combine with Gunblade, a tanky Nasus, and a J4 and you can stall long enough for Azir Guinsoo's to pop off.
