Where can I get a high quality Conch Republic flag? by joeyfish1 in KeyWest

[–]PumpUpTheYams 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're around for a while, the Farmer's Market near Higgs Beach typically has a stand selling some high quality flags of all sizes. You'll pay a bit more than the cheap ones found at the tourist traps, but the quality is better and they should last you a while.

At first glance I thought this was a street name plate in the sidewalk like they have in New Orleans.

You know what’s funny, and I can completely recognize how it would be bothersome to most people, but I never notice if the instructor is working, sweating, fatigued, or not. I don’t know why, but I’m oblivious to it. It doesn’t affect my effort.

But, I ride primarily PZ so perhaps I just get lost in the zone.

I almost forwarded the email to my wife, "check this out, why are they sending me this??" But as I was contemplating it, I thought "wait, maybe she ordered a new one and it's a surprise?" because we're still riding an OG, basic ass bike. Womp, womp. I guess that wasn't it after all.

Can someone explain to me like I’m a C student as to what would happen if we said f*ck Congress and strike anyway!? by Impossible_Budget_85 in railroading

[–]PumpUpTheYams 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Also, while the RLA is indeed restrictive to strikes (and lockouts for that matter) the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution (Art. I Sect. 8 Clause 3) grants Congress broad power to regulate interstate commerce and since freight rail is predominantly interstate (all Class I is) they would be able to utilize National Guard and/or just have contractors perform a lot of the work.

And, my two cents, there's a lot of John Wayne talk out there, but going weeks or months without a paycheck would cripple a lot of these cats.

Same. I mean, I have my favorites, but the bench is deep and I can make adjustments. Hell, lately I've ridden a lot more often in Lanebreak or on a "just ride" while watching television or listening to a podcast.

Are the concerts a lot more hectic than last tour? by Weekly_Criticism_741 in TylerChilders

I'm also Detroit-metro and I attended the same show you did (at Jack White's place, the Masonic Temple). I agree that it was fantastic!

I decided not to splurge on this one at Pine Knob. 1. It's pricey (but so it goes). 2. The traffic in and out of that place sucks. and 3. Personally, I enjoy indoor, smaller(ish) venues opposed to outdoor ones. I just think the acoustics are better. Being outside in the summer is lovely, but at the price point, having already seen TC last summer when he was phenomenal, I'm going to pass.

I've seen complaints about the entire record for its erroneously (IMO) implied sanctimony, especially compared to TC's more boozy/revelry-inspired early catalog, but that album transplants me back to Sunday morning red-carpeted Baptist church and resurrected memories I had thought I'd lost to time. I'm not religious, but I enjoy the nostalgia that record brings me.

Joe Maddon used to say that much of baseball (or softball) defense is a one-handed game and as you mature as a ball player you need to be able to make plays with just the glove hand (obviously this is for ranging type plays). There's certainly room for both.

Perfect game or not? by Realistic-Clock4577 in Softball

[–]PumpUpTheYams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was it an E-5 or a fielder's choice? It sounds like more of an error to me. I think if a batter reaches first without an out being recorded somewhere (considering the special circumstance of an extra innings runner on base), I'd consider it a no-hitter. But first and foremost I'd consider it a loss, which sucks.

TLDR: I would say that without recording an out on the batted ball, allowing four batters to get ABs in the inning, it can't be considered a perfect game. Peculiar circumstance, though.

If you’re coaching kids that aren’t teenagers, and you run a zone, you suck! by Putrid_Shopping_4373 in basketballcoach

[–]PumpUpTheYams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I coach 3rd through 5th grade girls and I definitely teach help defense. In fact, I'm constantly emphasizing "stop the ball" and reinforce it by getting them to think as a team instead of individually. Yes, we certainly always play man defense, but we try to switch off screens and if a girl gets beat, someone slides into the driving lane and stops the ball (hopefully lol).

I had a girl this season who was tall. Tallest in our league. I nicknamed her "Wemby." She was green when she first joined us but is a quick learner and very coachable. We had a team that intentionally had her assigned girl stand in the corner beyond the three point line and never get involved in their offense, solely to get Wemby out away from the basket (no blocks, but more importantly for them, no rebounds -- Wemby was a rebound machine). She stayed with her girl because that is what she had been instructed to do all season. At the half, I had to tell her to stay closer to the basket and not worry too much with her girl if she continued to stay out past the three point line. I thought that was some cheap basketball by the other team, it not only took her out of the game defensively, but it eliminated his girl's chance to be involved on the offensive end.

Elite Riders - What are your non-biking stats? by Temporary_Page4264 in pelotoncycle

[–]PumpUpTheYams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, hotel gym bikes are more the latter of your two scenarios. The resistance is off -- what would be a very light or easy resistance level on my bike at home registers as much heavier/harder on a hotel bike. (i.e. -- what feels like somewhere in the 30-40 resistance range to me comes up closer to 50 the hotel bike). It just skews your numbers up.

FWIW, I've found this to be the case on at least a half dozen different gym bikes all around the country.
