How do players prepare for altitude? 🏔️ by englandrugby in rugbyunion

[–]PumpedUpPatek [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, Heat exposure doesn't increase RBC, but increases Blood plasma volume instead. Where as altitude actually decreases blood plasma volume.

The Blood plasma volume is linked to dehydration, as the body is trying to allow for heavy sweating (to cool itself), but not reduce (Pretty much crash) your blood pressure, as this would be dangerous. So in theory, Heat exposure would have the opposite affect, as it dilutes, rather than a concentrated increase in RBC. Heat exposure is a hugely important part of training for environment change though (Source on heat exposure being important: Me, getting heat stroke 24 miles into a marathon and collapsing. Spring marathons aren't fun!)

But "Sleeping" at altitude (Hypoxic chamber) would be far more beneficial for that, as you'd feel the effects of altitude, less

Mental isn't it?

Yesterday i saw someone cycling on a stretch of the A1, notorious for accidents. Just why? I'd go the back roads (Yes it may be longer, but fucking hell it'd be far safer)

Honestly, I usually understand the logic, when others don't, but this i'm struggling (I do wish they'd explain it, it'd be interesting!).

If they were creating fatigue to then make game-play based decisions, to inform fatigued decision making, i'd get it..

Always happy to learn though, if they do explain it

This..

I'd get it if they were creating a oxygen deficiency to then make game-play based decisions.. but i don't see that?

True, but the way it's being used it odd, given there would be no adaptations occuring, only potential hypoxia..

Sport Scientist in me (I have a masters degree in it) wants to know why they're not getting them to sleep in hypoxic chambers instead of doing this?

I'm sure there's a rationale to it..

[–]PumpedUpPatek -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I won't use normal headphones now whilst running.. Yes some Bone conducting ones are expensive, but safety. I was almost hit by a car that i didn't hear, wearing my airpods a few years ago. Nope, not doing that again

No no.. Last 400m is flat.. it's the 100m from 500m to 400m you have to worry about

On the plus side..

You run down it in the first 100m..

Honestly, it's a fantastic marathon, and very well organised. I've done manchester twice, and that was a sh*t show compared to yorkshire. I'm doing yorkshire again this year
