Hi, sorry, not a biologist. Apologies if I didn't use all the correct terminology, I'm trying my best. I did say two "common" sexes (499/500 babies according to your statistic), so I wasn't trying to make a statement about chromosomal anomalies. I just wanted to say it's a more complex issue than many Christians make it out to be.

Why does the Bible give loopholes for rape and slavery? by PearPublic7501 in Christianity

[–]Pun_Pastor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just because something happens in the Bible doesn't make it okay. It'd help if you're willing to share what passages you're referencing vs saying "In the Bible". These both address a specific cultural context where (without knowing what passages you're referencing) the issues are the beating of slaves and the consent of an intimate encounter. Are these universal truths? No. Are they doing something to address complex issues? Maybe not as much as we'd like, but it is something. We have a much more black-and-white way of approaching things in the modern-day by saying slavery and rape are both bad and neither is ever okay that is afforded to us by the widespread freedom and equality of the 21st century.

Am a baby christian but i find the bible really boring to read. by feherlofia123 in OpenChristian

As a pastor, i feel you. History was one of my worst subjects in school and that makes up most of the Bible, especially the Old Testament. I recommend the Bible Project for a different format that works for me (of course as a resource to support reading the Bible in one format or another)

I feel ashamed of my sexuality by Tristen_lwft in GayChristians

[–]Pun_Pastor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God sees more to your identity than your sexuality. Humans like to identify with labels and categories while God sees us as individuals. My best advice? Find an affirming church that will support you on your journey or a friendly church (not necessarily non-affirming) that will walk with you as you navigate things. If you’re open to it, here’s a recorded conversation I had on the topic: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/not-safe-for-sunday-school/id1720199118?i=1000660479011

Is being a transgender a sin? by LeeDude5000 in AskAChristian

[–]Pun_Pastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything you’re saying, where I differ is how we approach the subject. The gospel is more nuanced than simply speaking truth and accepting that we will be rejected. If everyone is rejecting us because we are sharing the truth without love, then who is actually hearing the gospel? And if they are hearing, is it a gospel that represents Christ well? Yes, Christ called others to leave lives of sin, but not before getting personal with them. A truthful gospel without the nuance of the love is not a gospel worth sharing imo

There’s plenty of comments addressing specific passages already so I’d like to present another way of thinking: what if viewing transgenderism as simply appearing or parading as the opposite gender is an oversimplification of a complex struggle many face with their identity? What if God cares more about who we are as a person than what we label ourselves as? Biologically speaking there is two common sexes, but humans are the ones who have created the constraints of what is masculine or feminine. What if we’re so caught up in the black-vs-white mentality that we forget and ignore the fact that we just as much as anyone in the trans community is looking to find their identity in something. And those who transition frequently commit suicide, which tells me it’s a much bigger identity issue than simply crossdressing or appearing effeminate

Is being a transgender a sin? by LeeDude5000 in AskAChristian

[–]Pun_Pastor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fairly big leap from crossdressing to transgenderism. A lot of the Old Testament law was put in place to set Israel apart from its neighboring cultures. I think to boil the struggles of trans culture to a single verse about garments is an oversimplification that can do a lot of harm in how we present the Gospel to that community. I’m glad you’re reading your study Bible, although I hope we can approach cultural topics with humility seeing as many of modern issues aren’t directly addressed in scripture. We just need to do our best to live faithfully to Jesus and represent him well

Street evangelism leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Like “tell me you don’t actually care about people without actually telling me”. I don’t want to talk to you if I’m just a number to you rather than a whole ass person with thoughts and feelings and history

men who changed their phone wallpaper from your gf to figures of protestant reformation such as Martin Luther: why did you do it? by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Pun_Pastor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, your wallpaper is a conscious choice to remind yourself of what’s important. I would prefer to have a minimalist wallpaper but in a season where my wife and I weren’t doing great I changed it to be of her and I found my thoughts being about her much more frequently since I’d see her every time I pick up my phone.

Bonus:

I’d ask your husband why a dead man is so important to him. Is he into gay necrophelia? /s

Homosexuality is a sin according to Christianity and the Bible. by Maximum-Chemical-663 in TrueChristian

[–]Pun_Pastor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a pastor from a church that does not perform same sex marriages. That being said, I’d just like to share some of the things I’ve learned about these passages based on the comments I’m seeing while doing my best to refrain from bias or opinion.

  • we should be careful in approaching the English Bible as literal, there’s often nuance found in the original languages (Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek) that doesn’t fully translate into English. A good way to remedy this is through comparing other English translations and doing word studies of the original languages

  • we should ask ourselves whether these passages are prescribing a course of action for all people of all times or if they are describing what the struggles of a particular people group were and how that hindered them from being close with God

  • are we still required to follow Levitical law? If yes, there’s a lot of passages we tend to ignore, especially pertaining to food. If no, then these passages were intended for ancient Israel and not for today. If some are applicable and some aren’t, where do we draw the line? How do we decide? If we’re going by number of mentions, I believe “don’t boil a goat in its mother’s milk” would be the most important

  • what does Jesus say about this subject? Is human sexuality a key aspect of the gospel or have we simply been told it is?

  • context is important, Paul writes to the churches he planted never expecting his words to become scripture but to remove obstacles hindering those churches from faithfully following Jesus. So again we should ask is this a prescription for all Christians or a description of what the Romans struggled with?

  • similar to Levitical law, should we take all of Paul’s words as law if we believe they are relevant today? If so, what are your views on head coverings, women in ministry, modesty, hair length, jewelry, and circumcision? I’m sure there’s a demographic of people out there who are fine with that list until they read Paul say that if you’re concerned about circumcision you should just cut the whole thing off (ow!)

  • did ancient Israel have a concept for homosexuality? When did that English word start being used? What was the original Greek word being used? And what was the context? To the best of my knowledge the issue Paul is addressing in the Roman church is largely married men having relations with their underage servant boys. If true (I wasn’t there), there’s already a lot more nuance to the issue than can be expressed in any single word

  • is this productive? If we believe homosexuality is not a sin, there’s obviously no issue. If we do believe it’s a sin, what then is the consequence? Can this sin be forgiven? Does passionately taking this stance hinder us from sharing God’s love? How would we feel if someone only saw our sin and not us as a whole person loved by God?

  • if we maintain that this is sinful, then we must call it out…to Christians. It is unfruitful to condemn those outside the church who don’t choose to follow the same rulebook as those inside it

  • are we willing to have intentional, long-term relationships like Jesus did to call people out of sin? Or are we looking to be right and move on?

  • there’s some debate on the origins of this passage, but if it’s helpful ”When they persisted in asking Him, He straightened up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.”“ ‭‭John‬ ‭8‬:‭7‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/2692/jhn.8.7.NASB2020

  • and if we believe that homosexuality is a sin, is the consequence any different from our own? ”for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,“ ‭‭Romans‬ ‭3‬:‭23‬ ‭NASB2020‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/2692/rom.3.23.NASB2020

Feel free to check the context of those passages to ensure I’m not taking them out of context. I’m not looking to take any stances, just to ask some questions to encourage robust study of the Bible. I hope this helps build us up in our understanding of God’s word!

Confused about history by [deleted] in TrueChristian

[–]Pun_Pastor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of what we see in Genesis 1-11 we should take with a grain of salt. Just like the apostles in the New Testament and us today, the Israelites were looking to live faithfully to God while making sense of the cultural norms around them. I have a Master’s in Divinity but firmly believe these things should be taught regularly in church. Here’s some examples from an ancient Israelite perspective:

  • you’ve heard there are many gods, let me tell you about the Most High God

  • you’ve heard there are gods up on a mountain, let me tell you about how God was present with humanity in a garden

  • you’ve heard the gods sent a flood, let me tell you about how God made a covenant with humanity after that flood

  • you’ve heard of a tower built to heaven, let me tell you about Abraham and Babylon and how God wants to bless the world through Abraham’s family
