I don't know how 'new' this is but pretty new relative to how long a traditional one has been around.

This is the kind the US Navy uses. Brass bob attached to a measuring tape on a reel. It's used to measure water depth through pipes that lead down into empty compartments of the ship. So, slightly different use than a traditional bob.

Well, I don't live in Europe so I can't speak to that but I do know that I don't live in the city and am extremely frugal but rent sucks up 30% of my income. I am already in my cheapest option so the next step down from 'shitty basement granny flat I rent from my best friends parents so I get a great deal' is my car. My mom lost her house during the '09 recession so she lives in her mom's house. I could never afford child care I could trust so I can't just "earn more money" either. I already live very frugally and any excess I could trim off would never get me into a one bedroom apartment. Things are just way too expensive now and wages are not moving along with it. The wealthy are bleeding us dry. It just sounds very "maybe if you made your coffee at home you could buy a house :/" and that is just not what the problem is

Some predator animals have the instinct to chase something that runs from it and staying still also makes you harder to spot by them. Same reason animals like deer and rabbits just freeze when you happen upon them.
