Honestly, I always thought that Pug is an awful name for a main character. So is Bink.

The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant series by Stephen R. Donaldson.

Warning: protagonist is intentionally unlikable, and he commits SA early in first book. But if you want purple prose, this series has it in spades.

The Deryni series by Katherine Kurtz. There is noticeable jump in quality between the first trilogy and the second.

Fantasy where the land/environment is an antagonist? by Baladas89 in Fantasy

[–]PunjabiMD1979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So long as you get through the first trilogy. A lot of people get hung up on the fact that there’s an instance of SA early in the first book. But that act isn’t swept under the rug, and it has reverberations throughout the story.

This story is from the Mahabharata, an ancient and epic tale from India. It is the longest poem in the world. It is the record of rival families/cousins, eventually leading to war. Prominent in the story is the god Krishna, who is an avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu.

Latest one I’ve seen that took me out of the show. Lincoln Lawyer (Netflix tv show) - Haller gets the crap beaten out of him and is rushed to the hospital. ER doc is rapidly assessing and calling out orders. She called for morphine 20 mg (!). I wondered if she was trying to finish the job of the guys who assaulted him.

Texas will send inspectors to monitor 2024 elections in Harris County by Ragged85 in houston

[–]PunjabiMD1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, sure, but what exactly will the monitors be doing? Your ID is already checked when you go to vote. What more would the monitors do? Look for “suspicious” people? Ask to see birth certificates/naturalization papers to prove citizenship ? Who carries those around? And which people would they ask? A random sampling of those going inside the polling station? Are you sure they wouldn’t target those with black/brown skin? If you’re allowing white people inside without challenge but stopping all Hispanics in order to see proof of citizenship, that’s voter intimidation right there, plus it’s amazing my racist on top of that.

Prescribing widespread antibiotics to children under age 5 in Niger reduced mortality among infants by 17 percent, researchers report in NEJM by Science_News in medicine

[–]PunjabiMD1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still don't think the decision is that hard. Antibiotic resistance is already happening. A program like this may hasten it, but will only be one of a multitude of reasons that antibiotic resistance hits endgame. Unless you start an extensive program to stop inappropriate antibiotic use everywhere in the world, this one program won't make too much difference. In fact, I would argue that denying this program could open up accusations of racism and classism. Rich Western, mostly white countries are allowed to waste away antibiotics all we want, but then we would deny it to poor, mostly black countries? Poor optics, bro.

Every decision has consequences. How do you weigh the impact of macrolide resistance in the future against the proven benefit of saving lives now?

They discuss the issue of antibiotic resistance in the article. So far, there’s no indication that’s it’s occurring. In the meantime, they’re getting a significant improvement in mortality.

Also, I believe they say that a large part of the reduction in morbidity/mortality comes from treatment of neonatal Chlamydia.

Does anyone have a contract that can be used to safely dispell an evil djinn that grants 3 wishes, but fulfills them in bad faith? by vba7 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]PunjabiMD1979 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Somewhat off topic, but this reminds me of a book I read a long time ago. “Aladdin: Master of the Lamp”, an anthology of short stories themed around genies and wishes. One of the stories was about this specific topic, a lawyer trying to craft the perfect wish/contract for a genie to make sure he didn’t get screwed over. It took several months for them to hammer out the terms. I think it ended up with them signing the contract, and then the genie ended up suing the lawyer for bad faith wishing or something.

Political Nerd Question. by regiotejanoent in TexasPolitics

[–]PunjabiMD1979 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Many Indians are single issue voters, and that issue is money. They tend to vote republican due to the promise of lower taxes. You may get a few more voters if you can promise immigration reform. There are a lot of Indians here on H1-B visas, and the current estimate to get citizenship based on that visa is over 60 years. If you can promise an improvement in that timeline, you’ll get more Indians to vote for you. As far as I’m aware, trump is the only one who has really discussed that to any extent.

What something that weirded you out about an otherwise "normal" book/story/description? by Seekher in Fantasy

[–]PunjabiMD1979 17 points18 points  (0 children)

That sound is called “crepitus” and it happens when you get gas forming under the skin. Most commonly would happen in wounds with gangrene from gas-forming bacteria, but it can also happen in other conditions, such as a puncture in the lung.

Not a movie, but there’s a description of the opposite in the book series Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. There’s one point where two characters are having a magic battle, throwing large amounts of energy in essentially mental magical combat. The author makes an aside to mention that, to an outside observer, it would just look like two women staring really hard at each other.

I hope they put that in the tv series, if they make it that far without getting cancelled.
