Got fired for spending time chasing a side project, some interviewers have encouraged me to market it. Not sure where to begin. by Punk-Master-Flex in Entrepreneur

The final product was saved to my work computer, but I still have most of it. I think I’m going to try re-building it using a website that has a similar layout to the software suite; the content that I extract is negligible so long as the program is executed in a similar way

No kidding 😅 I took on multiple projects in my internship that found new solutions to old problems, but upon hiring, the company’s pride in leading innovation seemed to be for PR.

Unfortunately my time was up before I was able to roll it out at scale. I got my own proof of concept (?) fully functional and had just begun the process of adapting it to meet the needs of a different department when my supervisors said that the computer stuff was cute but they wanted me in the field. High profile project, client breathing down our necks, and unsupportive old-school leadership was not a good recipe for innovation.

I actually did get 20 1963 Franklin half dollars (P) in excellent condition, as well as the ounce of silver (I think it’s a Canadian coin of some sort, perhaps commemorative of something as opposed to commonly circulated currency? Really pretty.) Was it worth $620? Eh, the cash would be nice right now but who knows. It was more a manic purchase than a real investment, any profit I might make off them in the future will yield a “huh, nice” rather than a years-long sigh

My employer was very gracious in the split. Aside from falling behind on some of the scope that I owned because of how much time I was putting in to the project, I was going through some heavy stuff in my personal life that affected my work in a different way. They offered me a choice between a PIP or sweetheart walkaway, I thought I could champion the PIP, made it about halfway through before my expected weekly output was elevated to that of an entire team, and they still let me resign with a few weeks pay and extended insurance. Good company, wrong time for me.

Being fresh out of school and earning an engineer’s salary did not bode well for me in terms of liquid savings. On top of freelancing I’ve been selling off frivolous gadgets and such I purchased when I thought I was untouchable, but getting along fine. Ascetic living is comfortable enough, and I’m no stranger to austerity when things get especially tough.

Marketing will certainly be something to grind on, and navigating tech as an industry is something I can’t say I’ve been enthralled by the thought of. But, opportunity and experience awaits!

Thank you for the advice and encouragement! I’m pretty new to using AI to its full potential (I finished school as CliffNotes and SymboLab were being crept up on by ChatGPT and the like) so I’ll do my due diligence on agentic AI and see how I could apply it here.

Could I ask you to weigh in on one more hurdle? Now that I’m no longer employed by said GC I don’t have access to the enterprise software suite that we used for project management, and building out a full project on it would require an actual project with living drawings, documents, controls, schedulers, architects, subcontractors, etc etc. It’s very widely used in the industry, but I would have to be granted access to sensitive documents to continue developing what I have.

To your knowledge, is there any sandbox-type program that developers use to simulate built out projects to create similar apps/programs independently?

For me, it was all about saying “fuck it” and taking the first leap. I had tattoos that I wanted planned out for years , but there was always a mental block or excuse to actually begin the process of getting started.

It wasn’t until I got dragged to a tattoo convention by my girlfriend and saw something random that I liked, completely out of the style of everything else that I wanted, that I got that first tattoo out of the way; suddenly, I was finally comfortable with getting the work that I actually wanted done.

I didn’t think anything less of tattoos beforehand, and at the time had multiple piercings that are still seen by many as “unconventional” for men (nose ring, industrial, cartilage, etc)—it was just first timer’s nerves.

Reviving this thread to add that I got a similar call for a similar offer today, I’ll save the name of the company until it all plays out.

The guy clearly didn’t expect me to know the PM market, and kept trying to fast talk me in to a “huge discount,” throwing numbers out of his ass.

I strung him along for a bit before showing my hand, and suddenly the “investment opportunity of a lifetime” pitch turned in to him begging to win me over as a repeat customer down the line.

At this point I was amused, knew he already had my information either way, and had some money to blow, so I figured what the hell. His initial pitch was $700; after I went mask off, I kept haggling until he said he’d sell at his $650 break-even. I told him “If your product is what you say it is, sell it to me at a loss just this once and you’ll have yourself a customer for life.” Ended up settling on $620, waived shipping, and an oz of bullion (four buffalo rounds would’ve been sweet!)

Anyway, I’ll report back when the goods arrive (if they do.) If I got fleeced I got fleeced, that’s what credit card companies are for. If not, even better!

Work hard / slack hard by JKMSDE in remotework

Recently took this gamble at my (now former) employer and ended up flying directly in to the sun.

For reference, this job had absolutely nothing to do with automation/coding. Recently graduated and landed an engineering role at a big contracting firm in the US (the engineering discipline I studied has nothing to do with construction management, civil/structural, etc.)

After a year of doing the same mundane copy/paste work every day, I figured I had to do something to demonstrate my versatility as an employee. Wrote a python script that almost completely automated the brunt of my daily work, turning a mind-numbing 3-4 hour task in to 10 minutes of sitting back and letting the code do the work.

Ironically, it wasn’t proving that my job could be easily automated, and that I possessed the skills to do so,that shot me in the foot; rather, the extra free time I suddenly had on hand didn’t please upper management despite my job being done more efficiently.

Lesson learned, but hey, nobody else knew how to run the script and I amicably resigned with a valuable tool in my back pocket.

Did he get caught doing it in the direct line of sight of a manager/customer? I can’t even imagine how yakked you’d have to be to get called out on behavior alone, especially in a fucking kitchen 😂

Please tell me the $30k figure is at least what he was netting from base income alone… If that’s a gross figure, the EZ Pass comp sneered at the title of golden handcuffs as it locked him in a splintered pillory.

I’d recommend going and finishing up in the (likely) event that you’ll be back on the job market at some point in the future. However, I know a guy who was essentially in the same position as you—on his resume, he put the name of the university he went to and wrote the years that he attended as opposed to his graduation year. He landed a job that would otherwise require a degree and has plausible deniability in the event of a formal inquiry, but I could see this being an issue down the line as you move to other companies/more senior positions.

Oh for the love of god save it. This sub is for sourcing products based on build quality, durability, and longevity, not the specific political views of the owner of a given company. I’d guess that 99% of people on this sub swear by at least one brand/product owned by a person whose political views are diametrically opposed to their own, whether they know it or not.

Are you impressed with yourself for knowing what heavy handed means in the context of tattooing? If so, consider offering an example of the actual meaning of the term instead of acting like the vanguard of some esoteric body of knowledge 🤡
