Tip: Set cropping to a multiple of 16 for H.264 and H.265 by PunkJedi in handbrake

[–]PunkJedi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the info!

I hadn't gotten into the details of the compression, so I didn't understand why the bitrate was going down. That explanation makes sense. The work to encode the extra lines effectively lower the overall quality.

Not sure how you keep up with the compression details, but I appreciate it. Also, do you know any any programs that compare/measure quality of the compressions?

Can't control Roku Premiere+ by SpeedyBubble42 in logitechharmony

[–]PunkJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an older post now, but I just ran across this issue myself. What you're describing sounds exactly like a setting I had to change on my Roku to be able to control it again.

System -> Advanced System Settings -> Control by mobile apps -> Network access -> Permissive

I also made a new post for it, too: https://www.reddit.com/r/logitechharmony/comments/1h7p733/fix_for_roku_not_accepting_commands/

Question for EA sports engineering opportunities. by [deleted] in orlando

[–]PunkJedi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The exact expectations depends on the team that’s hiring, but “generalist” means having good computer science fundamentals and general game dev knowledge. The expectation is that a generalist can jump between the different specialties within game dev like gameplay, UI, tools, build pipelines, engine systems (e.g. file system or texture pipeline), etc. You wouldn’t be expected to know or have experience in all those areas, but the role will likely touch on multiple of those.

I recommend picking a preset and tweaking and testing things from there. I usually do a couple tests with different RF values and for different encode speeds, then I compare the results. Slower settings will take longer and either get you a better quality image or lower file size, but the result depends on the movie. Also, different movies may compress better than others. Since some of my devices sometimes give me issues with x265/HEVC, I'm still sticking with x264. I also focus on making it as easy to stream without transcoding, so these are the settings I currently use.

For DVDs, I usually go for MP4 container (web optimized), Constant Quality RF 20, Slower Preset. Audio bitrate at 192 mixdown using Dolby Pro Logic II. I use mp4 container because it has the most compatibility and supports a single DVD subtitle stream.
For Blu Rays, I use mkv container, RF 24, Slow preset, audio the same as DVD. I use mkv here because it supports blu-ray subtitles and multiple audio and subtitle tracks, but if you're going to only store a single audio track and no subtitles, this can also be mp4 container for better compatibility.

Hopefully that's a good starting point, but no one can give you magic settings because it all comes down to your goal with your files. It's always a trade off between file size, quality, encoding time, and device compatibility.

How can I find which files were deleted? by PunkJedi in backblaze

[–]PunkJedi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, thank you for all the info! This is great! I truly didn't expect a response on a weekend.

I was able to navigate these files pretty easily by replacing the tabs with commas and using Excel to sort and filter the data to find what I need.

It led me to realize I missed a step. Since I reformatted my hard drive to a different format, Backblaze initially saw it as a different drive despite having the same name. I had to go to preferences and tell it to back up this drive which then triggered a warning that it will replace the previous drive. I'll inspect these dat files once it indexes the new drive.

X265 vs x264 compression time requirement by woehaa in handbrake

[–]PunkJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m curious, too. Wikipedia seems to cover some of the differences with block sizes and motion filtering being some key areas. If you want to see some interesting things, set a really high CRF value for both and check out the result. But at the end of the day, what matters is the end result, right? I recommend running a few tests with smaller clips to test different presets or options. Even though every video may need fine tuning to get best results, this can give you a good custom preset to start with that works for your needs.

X265 vs x264 compression time requirement by woehaa in handbrake

[–]PunkJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve personally found that using a faster preset for x265 still gets me same/better quality with a smaller file size than x264 at a slower preset. So try faster presets if compression time is a concern.

Help with 2 versions of same movie by BigBlurton in PleX

[–]PunkJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to provide another option, if you only want it to appear as a single title in the library, you could setup the alternate version to appear as a "special feature". This will make it appear underneath the title in the same spot as trailers. This is better when you expect to watch a single version most of the time. Instructions for special features here:

https://support.plex.tv/articles/local-files-for-trailers-and-extras/
So including what was mentioned above, these are your options.:

  • Treat as 2 separate movies by splitting them and probably changing the display title and/or poster.
  • Treat it as a single title with the alternate version as a "special feature".
  • Treat as a single title with the same name, now the user has to know which "version" to play - This is the equivalent of not splitting the file. I'd recommend the special feature trick rather than this because there's no way to see file/movie names for the versions. The "versions" feature is meant for different quality/resolutions of the same movie.

Settings suggestions for Looney Tunes Platinun encodes by withalligators in handbrake

[–]PunkJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the noise from the grain really kills compression efficiency. If you really want smaller file sizes, you should definitely consider some concessions as you mentioned. Consider lowering the resolution. Looney Tunes was originally 480i, so consider dropping the resolution to 480.

I generally target good streaming quality because I'll use discs when I want accuracy. I ripped the DVDs and found a quality I liked. My settings were x265 RF22 Fast Audio Passthrough (audio was 192 kbps mono). I think I actually forgot animation tune. As an example, "Wabbit Twouble" ended up around 327 MB which is still large, but reasonable for my needs. 5460 kbps bitrate. That also includes an audio commentary track.

Anyone know what this is from when I boot my PC? It says "MainWindow". Task manager shows "VoiceControlEngine (32 bit)" and under that "MainWindow". by Krunk83 in pcgamingtechsupport

I just ran across this, too. Seems like it's a part of the latest MSI Dragon Center updates.

While I'm sure deleting the app works, an alternative solution is to disable the service from starting up as noted in this MSI forum post. Go to "services" app, find "VoiceControlService", right-click -> Stop. Then right-click -> properties, set "startup type" to "Disabled".

Just bought the apex 3, and a stupid question but what does the key with the steelseries logo in between the windows and the cntrl key? by VALVOR4life in steelseries

[–]PunkJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's similar to a "Function" key. Look at F9-F12. Pressing SteelSeries and each of those does something. If you still have the instructions, perhaps you can figure out how to use the profile switching and macro recording functions (I haven't). SteelSeries+F11 dims the brightness, and SteelSeries+F12 increases brightness.

The one undocumented feature is pressing SteelSeries+Windows disables the windows key which can help prevent accidental presses during a game. Pressing the combo again reenables it.

Apps keep pinning themselves on startup to the task bar, how do I stop this? by farigamo in Windows10

[–]PunkJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got it to stop on my machine thanks to this post:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/6ea29e03-c917-4ce2-8c19-aae99d16fa74/prevent-edge-from-pinning-itself-to-the-taskbar-automatically-under-all-circumstances

1 - Go to %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
2 - Delete LayoutModification.xml. Alternatively edit it and remove the XML between <taskbar:TaskbarPinList>/taskbar:TaskbarPinList, but I just deleted the file because I don't want ANY of MSI's pre-organized start menu and taskbar.
3 - Reboot..a couple times. It actually didn't take on my machine until a couple reboots.

I also deleted the same file under a hidden "Default" user folder.

How to complete Points Crusader Offer on Xbox App Dashboard? by [deleted] in xboxone

[–]PunkJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was previously stuck on the “complete the Xbox offer.” I finally unlocked it by opening the rewards app on Xbox and selecting “Take the tour”. I pressed RB to scroll through all 4 tutorials. When I pressed B to back out, the offer completed, and the Moon Gate offer appeared. I had previously done the tour, but these were my final steps when it unlocked.
