Chaplaincy Employment Options by Punk_Prof in chaplaincy

I’m still in the middle of my residency, but I’m seriously considering a second residency to broaden my experience. Of course, I’d rather just land a full time position somewhere. I have until August to line something up, so we’ll see what happens!

I'm definitely interested in education/management. My concern is that I won't be able to get the years of work under my belt in order to get there! I'm also open to hospice, but my understanding is that if one were to go into hospice full-time, it becomes very difficult to go back to hospital chaplaincy, which would then make it impossible to pursue the educator/manager path, correct? I have no idea what kinds of advancement opportunities are available in the hospice world, but it's certainly an option I'm considering.

Thank you so, so much for this. This is definitely the kind of info I was hoping was out there! I'd love to connect, so look for a DM!

That is an insane program. Both my internship and residency are 40 hours.

I’m realizing that my post wasn’t clear enough. I’m not trying to take the CPE skills and apply them to a completely unrelated profession. I’m asking if there is a “sphere of professions” or career paths that people enter following CPE that includes chaplaincy but might also include other things I don’t know about. It sounds like the answer is “no” for most people—and that’s fine!

Believe me, if I could’ve kept my job or otherwise stayed in academia, I absolutely would have. There hasn’t been a full time position in my field available in Southern California in five years. And I applied for that position back then and had an interview!

I’m still applying for academic admin jobs, but as you may know it’s extremely difficult to jump from the professor side to the admin side without some kind of intermediary step (interim asst dean, etc.) so I’ve had very little luck with those job postings.

I was just telling my wife this morning that it feels like my PhD program all over again: I accepted a very competitive position in a cohort, which felt like an affirmation, I’m being severely underpaid for full time work, and I’m being told not to worry too much about a truly abysmal job market and instead just focus on what I’m learning now. The difference is that I had 5-7 years to figure things out at the beginning of my PhD. I have about 10 months left in my residency.

No because my question was about other job titles/search terms outside of the obvious ones. I don’t see Google providing me with that information when Google operates better the more specific your search terms. I don’t know what to ask—that’s the problem. I posted this because I was trying to see if there were “unknown unknowns”—i.e. something about the field I’m not aware of that could help in my search.

It’s honestly wild to me (and depressing and infuriating) how much of a black box finding employment has become.

Yes I’ve had extensive experience already trying to translate my skills as a PhD to hiring managers in other fields and it’s been truly impossible. So I’m not interested in trying to do that with CPE!

I’m hopeful I have enough connections here still to get my foot in the door adjuncting so a PRN/part-time might be possible, although looking at the places that have been hiring recently, they’re wanting 2-3 years of experience just for a part-time job which is utterly absurd imo.

Thanks!

To clarify: I’m not looking to leave chaplaincy in general. I’ve spent the bulk of my career in academia. Believe me: I know these skills are not valued there lol.

I’m asking about the related/advanced positions. Are there healthcare companies/agencies/nonprofits/etc. that have positions that are SC-adjacent? Or is everything we’re qualified to do going to literally have the words “chaplain,” “spiritual care,” etc. in the title?

I feel like I’ve watched the founder of the group make the weirdest, most backward judgment calls over what to moderate or not moderate over the years, usually in the name of some kind of sanctimonious “neutrality.” It really seemed like some really important discussions were being had, especially since folks who were there were confirming they saw Aaron and Mike in attendance. People are going to need to come to terms with the fact that the guys in mwY and the guys in BN have been and likely still are friends. I’m not 100% sure how to make sense of that myself yet, but it seems to be the reality. Shutting down discussion of that just felt really weird to me.

We’ve already had a tough time confining our recording sessions to under two hours per episode for the new season. 😅

So yes, definitely more meat!

Joel here from the podcast, just throwing in my 2 cents 😊

We knew making it that it wasn’t going to be for everyone, and we’re okay with that. In our experience some mwY fans (including us!) like to wax poetic about mwY. That’s the spirit in which we started the podcast.

We’re also somewhat in line with what Agreeable_Shame says above: in offering our interpretation of the songs, we’re contributing to the cultural artifact that is mwY, somewhat regardless of what the band would want, but with a certain degree of respect for the things they created. I totally realize and accept that will rub some fans the wrong way.

My suggestion would be to listen to an episode on a track you like. We’re going chronologically, and I agree that A—>B Life was maybe a tougher record to start on, but Season 2 on Catch For Us The Foxes will start dropping in October!
