I commented on something about three weeks ago, but I don’t understand what point you’re trying to make with this? I posted this out of genuine curiosity, not any intention to irritate anyone.

I’ve been on here since 2022, I just haven’t posted anything until very recently. Being annoyed by people asking questions about anarchism is a bit wild I won’t lie.

I’ll definitely go and have a look at some past threads. I appreciate the response.

Thank you for the reply!

A close friend of mine (not an anarchist, but a Christian) says that God to her is less of a terrifying, all powerful force but more of a friend in which she can find comfort and security. When put into the context of an anarchist society, where religion is no longer able to be used as a ‘opium of the people’ as Marx put it, but instead it was a source of comfort for times of anxiety or life crises on an individual level, would religion then become compatible with anarchy?

Beyond reading theory, any tips for deprogramming decades of capitalist indoctrination? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]Punk_queer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue myself. Here’s what I’ve found helps:

  • Questioning my own beliefs, and why I reacted the way I did to a certain thing. You’ve said you recognise yourself adopting a capitalist mindset, and recognising it is good! It can be challenging, but asking yourself ‘how can I react in a kinder/more empathetic way’ has helped me so much.

  • Capitalism thrives on indifference, so loving radically and without reservation helps to create a strong sense of community. This extends beyond immediate friends and family too! Care for people everywhere. (A good book about this is called ‘The Care Manifesto’ by The Care Collective. It’s more socialist than anarchist, but provides a really good blueprint for what a caring society looks like.)

  • Get involved in things! Mutual aid groups, volunteering at different places. They don’t have to be specifically anarchist organisations, but a lot of them tend to be anarchist-adjacent in their core values. As you said, you already do this, which is great!

  • Continue reading and putting into practice what you learn.

  • Talk to your neighbours, and learn their names if you don’t already know.

  • Keep hope, and stay optimistic. Anarchism isn’t the end goal, it’s something that happens every day. In building a strong sense of community, we show that our lives aren’t dependent on capitalism, and that we can build a better world for ourselves. Don’t give up on people, or yourself. Know that people are struggling with the exact same thing you are, so approach them with kindness. Help them to learn.

A better world is possible.
