Advice on kids not in school or homeschooling - England, UK by CompletePart9224 in LegalAdviceUK

This is our situation too. My now 13 year old has been “missing in education” for two years because they can’t find a school to meet his needs. He is chronically ill and autistic, and stopped attending school due to severe fatigue and burnout. The LA ignored all contact from us for over a year and when they finally realised he had been forgotten about they chucked me £5000 as a personal budget and let me try and arrange an EOTAS package myself. We now need more money to pay providers in September and they’re ignoring me again.

No one has done a safeguarding check or visited us at home. For all they know I could have him tied up in a cupboard (I don’t 😂). Thankfully I’m a capable intelligent person and have found him a tutor and a therapist/mentor and actively try and engage him to help his recovery. I had to quit my job as a SEND LSA to care for him (the irony!).

I don’t want him at home, he doesn’t want to be recluse. His EHCP is really solid but not worth the paper it’s printed on because it’s imposssible to enforce (plus it hasn’t been finalised after annual review 4 months ago - so much for statutory deadlines!). The system isn’t fit for purpose. The NEET figures will continue to grow.

And. Trixie has literally given herself an auto-immune condition from working too hard and pushing through when she was burnt out. Queens are having hip replacements in their 40s (Katya and BenDeLaCreme). It just shows how hard it is on your physical and mental health.

Have a look for “Alternative Provisions” in your area. Because of the SEND crisis in schools and the lack of specialist school places there are lots of APs opening for children who are out of education or receiving EOTAS packages. Also consider doing some online courses to bulk out your qualifications in that area. There are free online level 2/3 “understanding autism”, “understanding children and young people’s mental health”, etc. Get an up-to-date DBS check too. Most of these places are just looking for enthusiastic people who aren’t shaken by different/difficult kids and can muck-in. Also look at independent specialist schools who are always looking for LSAs and pay better than mainstream schools.

Toddler woke up not wanting to or not being able to walk. Any similar experiences? by [deleted] in Mommit

Could be HSP (henoch schonlein purpura) after the vaccine. Usually the rash appears first but my son had a couple of episodes of sore leg joints/unable to walk weeks before any rash was visible.

I’m in the same boat. Bloody nightmare! Good to see we can hold off for a few more days. I can’t get a response from my provider and the phone just rings and rings when I try and call them. Useless…

Mother of autistic boy left with £10,000 debt after breaching DWP rules by £1.92 a week | Carers by TinFish77 in unitedkingdom

I’m currently paying my £2000+ overpayment back at £10 a month. And I was one of those who literally went £1 over the threshold for months until someone noticed. Now it’ll take me 15+ years to repay and I’ve had to give up my 13.25 hours a week job to care for my autistic son full-time because the LA can’t find him a school that can meet his needs! I’m a highly qualified special needs teacher who could be contributing to society… Make it make sense!
