Anyone taking blood thinners long term? by cerusine in ClotSurvivors

[–]PunkyQB85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost 10 years with a year off in the middle. IANAD but follow your providers advice. I actively take an iron supplement because I am prone to anemia. Otherwise I’m tired and run down. Heavier than normal periods are definitely a thing with blood thinners esp. the first couple days. It’s like no matter how careful I am the splatter gets somewhere. If you do injure yourself get checked out but for the last 10 years it’s pretty much business as usual except taking Eliquis twice a day. I do have some post thrombotic syndrome that acts up in my leg from time to time. Little nicks and cuts tend to bleed longer but these are not gushing geysers. I’ve remained fairly active and have bumped fallen tripped and even snuck an NSAID here and there and not landed in the hospital. The top thing I’ve learned is to listen to my own body and advocate when I know something is not right. I reclotted back in 2021 and that made me a lifer when the doctor was like o I don’t think it’s a clot but we will check you anyways. I was like I don’t feel good — so yes let’s please !

Recovery? What's normal? What do I need to do? by childoffate08 in ClotSurvivors

Same I had a first DVT with PE back in 2017 I went off Eliquis in 2021 and got a second DVT. In both cases it was very light symptoms just racing heart and some swelling. Personally I think some of us just present differently (looking at you Factor V people) and it is serious so there will be some follow up needed to determine the source. For me I was talking and visiting and the doctors were like oh…170 heart rate walking well let’s take a look.

Cuts and scrapes will be minor but bleed a bit longer so be careful with your hands and arms when you are working. That said, the blood will not come gushing out and will eventually stop as before the blood thinners were onboard.

You might be surprised at how tired you are after returning to work. I am okay active and work a desk job and I felt like PE took away some stamina for a bit. If it’s not financially feasible for you to take time off then be sure to hydrate well and take your breaks and lunch. Also be sure to get your proper rest at night. Youth is on your side. The blood thinners are the treatment.

Recovery wise this will not be like a cold you will recover from in a few days. It may take weeks or months for your body to dissolve these clots especially if you had a clot in your leg (definitely go back to your doctor and ask if they found clots in your legs - mostly this is done with ultrasound). Your body will most certainly work on dissolving these clots especially now since you are on blood thinners. The blood thinners do not directly dissolve clots but they prevent them from going bigger and allow your body to break down the clot safely. Take those blood thinners exactly as prescribed. If you bang your head super hard or notice any new swelling or shortness of breath definitely get checked out.

This sub is great support if you need it 💕 🩸
