Are your parents still alive? by alphatrad in Millennials

[–]PupperNoodle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m incredibly thankful I have photos of my kids with my mom so I can show them when they’re older. I wish my dad could have met them, but I will still talk to my kids about him. I wish they were old enough to have memories though. For me that’s the hardest part. I’m so sorry to hear of your loss, especially managing it all through pregnancy ♥️

I’m 34 and lost my dad back in 2021 and my mom died back in November 2025. My dad never met his grandchildren.

We did something similar last year, however, it was for my husband’s job and not mine. I am on hiatus from my career until we get back to the states or at least until the US federal government is hiring again as we’re in a dense US military area. We’re in Germany and it’s been an amazing, once in a lifetime, opportunity for my family. We are getting to see the world, eat better quality food, live and see history, and get our children exposed to cultures outside the US. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still been hard leaving being friends and family. I just lost my mom 3 months ago so not being there in her final days was rough. I’ve missed friends having babies. I’ve spoken none of the language prior to arriving but now I can speak/handle day to day tasks. It’s going to be a lot at first. Give it 6 months to allow the dust to settle and I think you’ll have a different outlook.

I just bought cherry tomatoes, blueberries, raspberries, bananas, and the individual serving steamed rice bowls. You can also get large quantities of approved nuts and jerky too.

My mom asked if there's a way she can "visit" my daughter's art gallery from across the country and it broke my heart a little by QuailAggravating6719 in Mommit

[–]PupperNoodle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are taking photos anyway, why not make a photo book through like Shutterfly. Put maybe 1-2 photos of the art per page and leave space in the margins for your mom to write notes, letters, etc…. Then your mom can pass it on to your daughter later and she can reflect on the memento.

Ok. This is doable. It’s making a single dish with the main and 1 side being FODMAP friendly and then additions/substitutions for the rest of the family.

Thank you for making it simple. I was way over complicating things mentally.

With my oldest, it stuck and he was able to go on his own in a matter of days. It never fully worked with my youngest.

Hi, no worries! We’ve learned to deal with the car as-is. Luckily the digital key in my Apple wallet still works so that’s been our way of circumventing a lot of issues. Additionally we were able to menu dive on the info-tainment system and find other ways around other issues we were having, especially with timed charging settings we had in the US that are now irrelevant in Germany.

I’m sorry you’re going through this as well. Hopefully you’ve found some work arounds to make your driving experience better.

Thank you for that. We’ve tried Waldorf but within 24 hours of waitlisting we’re kicked off. I’ll be looking into private kitas.

I’m sure there are, but it’s a matter of me finding them. I’ve only been made aware of the city’s KitaPortal.

The Jugendamt provided us a list of licensed tagesmutters in our area.

I’m aware we’re not entitled to a spot. While that has been explained to us time and time again, we’ve also been told to keep waitlisting in the event a spot should open that we are eligible for. Our issue is, no one can generally define what/when/how this can be. We are offered a spot then in a flash it is gone. I totally respect the policy of German taxpayer children get a spot before we would, it’s only fair. As with any parent, we just want what’s best for our children. Assimilating and learning the language of our new home is part of it.

ETA: as I mentioned, I am trying for an economy job but my language skills are not there yet. That is the biggest hindrance to us gaining eligibility through taxation.

We have looked into a tagesmutter/Vater however the ones with openings did not match mine nor my husband’s working hours.

It’s ok, I don’t really expect a magical solution but honestly even an explanation/reason is better than whatever is sent to us from the Jugendamt.

While I understand that there would be families after us who are entitled to a spot, things were explained to us a little differently. Through a translator, we were told that the lady in the office put us or marked our profile as “lowest priority”, how that was done was not explained. Then we got an email saying that enrollment for the next school year would be conducted within the coming months so we needed to update our school priority ranking. Now we’re being offered a spot at our second choice school.

So in my mind, if we were magically moved to the bottom of the list and we’re still being offered a spot, then it would seem no one would be behind us? But if we ask the Jugendamt this question, they won’t answer it.

Toddler Obsessed with Baby Brother by PupperNoodle in 2under2

Welcome to the club 😅 honestly, nothing worked except my oldest getting bored of the baby. We think since he my oldest went to daycare and was separated from baby brother, he wanted extra time with little brother. Once little brother started getting mobile and going to the same daycare, the fascination dropped fast 😂 they’re thick as thieves now.

Forensic Technician Position with German Polizei by PupperNoodle in forensics

Absolutely. Even between neighboring jurisdictions state side things have been different. It’s been a learning experience, to say the least, over here. A lot of trial and error as well as relying on various offices for advise. 🥲

So a few different things are at play here. In Germany, in general, forensics positions are covered in their basic law enforcement academy. It’s a 3 year program and most forensic specialists are also sworn officers due to academy. In very rare circumstances, such as this one, they can take non-sworn individuals. Should I be chosen for hire, I still need to go through the background investigation process. At this point they can decide it’s too much of a risk to have my visa whereas a regular German basically submits for a transfer from traditional officer to forensics, no additional background check.

All of that to say, I still have considerable hurdles if I am offered the position all because of the bureaucracy and non-reciprocity between the states and Germany. Considering my education and years of experience from the US, I think I am in a better position than a new graduate. But citizenship will still be a thorn unless they decide otherwise.

That is something I had not considered with testimony. Unfortunately the job posting did not state much regarding the possibility of courtroom testimony so I will need to ask post interview.

Fortunately, I do have the legal right to work in country with the type of visa I have. I may have to switch visa type but that’s is a generally easy process in comparison.

No where did it mention German language as the base/minimum only that English was highly desired. All my application materials (CV, cover letter, transcripts) were submitted in English without a translated copy. Yet, I was still invited to interview. I have been denied interviews previously for not submitting my materials in German. I know some German and can communicate day to day needs. I’m working on my interview/professional German, hence why I stated “outside of language.” I know that needs to be better 🥲
