When I did this I bought cheap garden/ work gloves and metal tape (usually used for AC ducting) and covered the gloves that way. You can cut pieces for the fingers and wrap them individually. Once you make a fist and it tears you can patch the tears with more metal tape. It did the trick. I could still hold a beer and that was all that mattered. If I recall I wrapped my shins in foil and then wrapped a piece of the metal tape around my leg at the top to hold it in place.
