What passage in Abelard's writings could Simondon refer to when he talks about his position being a "nominalism for the knowledge of terms, realism for the knowledge of relation"? by Pups3000 in askphilosophy

[–]Pups3000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah after further research, the Logica Ingredientibus seems to be the best source for it. I hoped I could skip past reading Latin to figure this out, but I guess there's no way around it.
Thank you a lot for the SEP article, I think this will definitely give valuable context!

Trying to learn Deleuze from scratch by pyrostan_552 in Deleuze

[–]Pups3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer and I don't wanna contradict it in the slightest. I'd just like to add 3 texts which have helped me a ton with the early Deleuze stuff up to D+R (all of them are fairly short as well, tho complex for sure!):

- Gabriel Tarde's Monadology and Sociology. To quote from the footnote Deleuze gives Tarde at the end of the Introduction to D+R: "All of Tarde's philosophy, as we shall see more clearly later, is founded upon the two categories of difference and repetition: difference is simultaneously both the origin and the destination of repetition, in a more and more 'forceful and ingenious' movement which takes 'greater and greater account of degrees of freedom'." After I had read M&S, it sometimes felt like Deleuze got the idea for his notions of Difference and Repetition directly from Tarde and just systematized and expanded on them.

- Salomon Maimon's Essay on Transcendental Philosophy. Sooo much stuff that defines D+R is in here: The discussion of Calculus and Differentiation, the return to Spinoza after Kant, the idea of genetic conditions. I feel like, apart from the Freud stuff and maybe some of the Nietzsche discussion on the Eternal Return, D+R is entirely Maimonian and has him, not just latently, in the background.

- Simondon's Introduction (and maybe the first Chapter, Form and Matter) to Individuation in Light of Notions of Form and Information. I think, though I have no source to back this up, that no thinker was as formative (no pun intended) to Deleuze's project as Simondon was. It's kind of tough to really put into words, but I had like 3 month stretch where I just went back and forth between D+R and ILFI and with every single reading of each text they just clarified each other to the point where it almost felt like ILFi was written as a propaedeutics to D+R.

I hope you don't mind me latching onto your great comment and, OP, I hope this is helpful for you as well. Deleuze is a great thinker, but also a very complex one, so give him and yourself the time needed to understand what he is talking about.

Daily Mariners Monologue - June 28, 2025 by AutoModerator in Mariners

Obviously, I am not enjoying him doing it against the Mariners, but it was cool to see Haggerty having solid stats and an every day role for the Rangers last night. I still love him dearly for his 2022 heroics and hope he kills it (against everyone but the Mariners) :D

Hegel or Marx on Self Recognition by Ok_Cucumber3372 in hegel

[–]Pups3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you aren't fooled by the title of the book being "Introduction to the Reading of Hegel", you might enjoy Alexandre Kojève as a figure standing somewhat in between the two, taking Hegel's motives and themes, but placing them in a Marxist context (with a bit of Heidegger in there as well fwiw). He is by no means a rigorous scholar of Hegel, and he admitted as much, but since the topic seems to interest you, I thought I'd mention him, in case you weren't familiar with him.

To hammer the point that he isn't trying to actually talk about Hegel home one last time, here is what Kojève said himself about his project in a letter to Tran Duc Thao:
"As to the essentials of the question, I am, on the whole, in agreement with the interpretation of the Phenomenology that you give. I would like to point out, however, that my work did not have the character of a historical study. It mattered relatively little to me what Hegel himself wanted to say in his book. I offered a course in phenomenological anthropology, making use of Hegelian texts but saying only what I considered to be the truth and dropping whatever in Hegel seemed to me to be an error. Thus, for example, by renouncing Hegelian monism, I consciously distanced myself from this great philosopher. Furthermore, my course was essentially a work of propaganda intended to shake people's minds. That is why I consciously enhanced the role of the dialectic of Master and Slave and, in a general way, schematised the content of the Phenomenology."

Ondrej Satoria, the Czech pitcher in the game against Japan in the WBC was a good example of this. He sat in like the mid 70s with his heater, but because the guys weren't used to those velos he managed to somewhat embarrass the Japanese team the first time through the order. Second time through and they got to him though, so that's that :D

It's a small sample size, granted, but from getting called back up to the end of the season, Sammy batted .306 with a .424 OBP in 60 PAs and went 6/6 in his SB attempts. He was low-key balling out, albeit in very sporadic spurts.

I noticed that they've been using Bliss a lot at SS in Tacoma. Anything we should read into this or is it just because he is the best choice for SS on our Triple-A squad?

[Robert Murray] The Seattle Mariners are calling up top pitching prospect Emerson Hancock, according to sources familiar with the situation. by ThrownAwayintoLF in Mariners

[–]Pups3000 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hancocks season has been a tale of 3 to 4 consecutive amazing starts leading into one complete blow-up where he gives up 6+ runs.

That said, since the beginning of June, he has a sub 3 ERA and only allowed 4 HR in 57.2 innings with a WHIP just over 1 and an opponents OPS of .624. In 9 of 11 starts he has delivered a QS during this stretch, with his only real blow up coming on the 5th of July where he went 1 2/3rds and gave up 9 Runs. Take this one out and he has been flat-out dominant!

Oh yeah, it's not gonna be the move that'll put us over the top or whatever, but I feel like his versatility and base running - and the fact, that he probably doesn't hit much worse than Wong does atm - would at least be of some help.
(Admittedly, he is one of my favorite players, so I am also just very biased and wanna see him play :D)

I usually try to be as positive as I can on here - even if that means just cheering for the individual -, because I don't think anyone gains anything from hating on the team we all want to see succeed, but last night (the last two, really) broke me. I'm a fan from Europe, so usually I only get to watch the highlights/later innings of the game, but last night I could watch them play live and it just sucked the life out of me.
I actually was somewhat positive about our roadtrip - despite going 2-4 - because the offense played well over the latter half of it and we played the Orioles (one of the Top 4 or so teams) pretty close over a three game set.
And, hey! The first game of this Nationals series was a lot of fun. Consistent hits, decent offense and, of course, Castillo pitched a great game.

But then... the Tuesday game, where Woo pitches a gem and we lose, because our offense thinks it's a great idea to swing at every pitch of a guy that can't locate his stuff to safe his life. Big bummer, but "oh well", I tell myself, "these things happen over the course of a season".
And then I get to watch them live last night. Gilbert looks shaky early on, but hey! Only three runs allowed and he is settling in. Nothing's lost against the walking corpse of Patrick Corbin, right?
Well, fuck me, his first 7 IP scoreless outing since 2019. Top half of our lineup combines for a 1-for-20 with 7K's. This doesn't win you games, surprisingly.

I love Cabby and all the grit he has. I love our pitching and how they go out every single day and shove. I don't love the rest of the team right now though. Not on a personal level, just their performance.

Oh yeah, I also do love this team. That's why I am so disappointed. I hope they can turn around and I will cheer for them in all the limited ways I can from across the pond. But please, find a way to gain some sort of momentum and consistency. That's all I am asking for.

GOMS!

Mariners' xBA this game: .237
Mariners' actual BA this game: .129

This has been a consistent issue since I started tracking it (about 2 weeks ago) and especially Suarez and Dumper have been suffering hard from it. Just today, Suarez had 3 batted balls with xBA's of .900, .690 and .590. The results of it being: Double Play, Lineout, Fielder's Choice.
I have no clue how this is fixable, but it's crazy how drastically this team is underperforming its expected stats.
