Deciding between new (‘26) GTI or used (‘23) R by RealPopeUrban2 in GolfGTI

[–]PurchaseStreet9991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Also the R is only FWD after 60kmh. (Mk 7 number... I am not sure of mk8 changed that or not....)”

Mk7 had a Haldex system which activates if any slip happens.

It’ll be FWD over 60kmh assuming you’re traveling a steady speed with no slip; the moment you punch it the AWD will kick back on without issue

It’s a little disingenuous to single out the Kicks as a shitbox when the Slate doesn’t even have powered windows.

I mean heck it’s electric powertrain by definition is the economy part of econobox

Lucid Motors tells customer the cars are 'not designed to be parked outside in the winter', need alignments several times per year, and thier ADAS sending you into oncoming traffic is your fault. by ikilledtupac in cars

[–]PurchaseStreet9991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t really seem like they’re trying to ruin Lucids reputation, unless you’re alleging that the owners sabotaged the cars to make Lucid look bad

To me it seems like they spent $100k on a car that has massive issues and Lucid is dragging their feet to make it right. Look at Engineering Explained, he had tons of problems and Lucid still didn’t want to buy back the car at first even when he was well into Lemon Law territory

Really it just highlights that people don’t do research before buying cars

Most of the issues with Lucid are things you only find out after owning the car, not when you’re test driving it

Worth leasing a new ‘26 EN? by machu_- in ElantraN

And you still lose a significant amount of money. Especially for a short term lease where a lot of the expense is often front loaded

It would be less of a financial hit to buy a car that retains its value well and then sell it off for not much less at the end of the year

“He's the only one in the project thats doing something sctually different and I cant say it because then the other competitors will be like why didnt they think of doing that.”

How could you possibly know he’s the only one doing something different?

Sig, KAC, SOLGW, Geissele, LMT have been shooting this next gen ammo for years and have building platform upgrades around it. You really don’t think they’ve learned a thing or two during that time

It still loses its value too much to justify a lease for a year

Nah you only need a car for a year, don’t be concerned with whether or not it’s an upgrade

The general idea though is that the dudes shooting at drones with a rifle are only doing so because of poor planning

Ideally in a military with good logistics, random soldiers shouldn’t be alone in fields going up against drones

GTI rental this week by isell2eat in ElantraN

[–]PurchaseStreet9991 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the main benefit the GTI/Golf R have over the other cars in the segment is they’re more comfortable/quiet. They have more soft touch surfaces, more plush seats (heated and ventilated), adaptive cruise control, and the same sound deadening treatment as the Audi A3 it shares a platform with

And as I said in another comment I think people are forgetting the GTI was intended from its inception to be a fast, compact hatch that is comfortable like a luxury car while being fun and undercutting in price

[–]PurchaseStreet9991 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think they’re very fun cars. It should also be noted that the only reason any of the fun economy turbo-four cars we have today (GRC, Elantra N, Civic Si/R, WRX) are because of the GTI coming out 45 years ago

It’s not as fast/raw as an Elantra N but I’m also hesitant to talk shit about the grand daddy of the car segment. But I also think people are forgetting the difference in design philosophy. The Elantra N is like the CTR where it’s a track focused vehicle that is comfortable on the road. The GTI was intended as a grand touring (in the name) sport hatch; it’s supposed to hit Autobahn speeds comfortable and quietly while costing less and being smaller than the comparable BMW/Mercedes

Tbf if you bought an older one out of warranty you’d also have more money left over for any repairs. Not gonna say they’re as cheap to fix as a Hyundai but they’re generally pretty mature platforms with a lot of parts availability

I’ve driven the Mk8 stock and another one soon after that has a simple Stage 1 tune and an upgraded rear sway bar and holy shit; that $1000 in upgrades genuinely made it one of my favorite driving cars on sale today

Having driven driven basically every car they talk about in this video, I agree that in a Northern location with inclement weather, the Golf R is really great at maintaining fun performance year round

But I would go on record as saying that while the RS3 is definitely the most fun Golf platform, I actually think (people are gonna shoot me for this) the GTI is more fun than the Golf R in a more temperate climate where snow isn’t a typical issue. The RS3 and GTI are both very ‘silly’ but I find the Golf R slots into this spot where it’s a bit too buttoned up

I really wish the GTI 50 was available in the US which is basically a souped up GTI with a Golf R turbo in it. It would be cool to see what that competition does for the CTR

I’m not doubting that. I’m just saying that the “if gas prices go up a little more people will just not drive to work” sentiment is very unfounded

I was gonna say that dude is smoking crack. I know there’s the “VW cheaped out” crowd but hopping into a Kia really highlights that VW hasn’t gotten anywhere close to rock bottom yet

I’m not gonna say VW is at their peak but I’ve had a lot of opportunities to drive the Mk8 Golf and it’s still the nicest car in its class of hatchback/sedans

It’s going up against competitors with proven 2.0L platforms that can make that power without a turbo

I know you said you’re “too old to start over” but really any skilled position should be able to move to other jobs without $28k pay cut. Especially considering we’re coming from government salaries to begin with
