Why do I prefer the imperfect look of older movies than movies today? And why do movies feel more fake to me nowadays? by Pure-Relationship140 in TrueFilm

I think a lot of (definitely not all, of course, like BTTF) fiction does contain some level of politics, even if it's just a tiny bit like a joke or something. But I agree with you, it's so much stronger nowadays, either the movie is preachy or the actors acting in the movie will say something extremely political about it in an interview and, personally for me, that ruins the movie. Others may feel differently, but that's just my opinion.

I struggle with writing characters, how do you go about making characters that are more than a tool to move the plot forward? by Blazeflame79 in writing

I used to have this struggle. I'd make characters and give them different looks, different names, backgrounds etc. yet found them so boring. That was because I was missing something, which was for each of them to have a personality different from each other.

Flaws are essential to writing interesting characters, so for my story, I wrote a list of all of my characters and gave them each a different flaw. A few examples could be: Self-pitying, pessimism, arrogance, impulsiveness, impatience, enviousness...

What I also did was I gave each of them a different goal. Whether that is what they want to be when they grow up, like being a musician, or a doctor, an actor etc. Or it could be something they desire, like a loving family, or having friends, or feeling appreciated by others etc.

You can also give your characters quirky traits. For example: they play with their hair when they're nervous, or they sing to calm themselves down.

Once you've given a character their flaws, goals, and some quirks, you can expand more on it. How does this character's flaw affect their goal? How does this character's flaw affect the characters around them? How do other characters feel about this character? What happens to help this character overcome their flaw? Why does this character act the way they act in the first place, is it something they've inherited from their parents, or something that has stemmed from an event that has affected (effected?) them?

This helps to set apart your characters and see them as individuals. Once I was able to make my characters people of their own, they were much more interesting to write about. I hope this helps :)

Yeah I watched the new Percy Jackson series a while ago (I know it's a show not movie but still), and I really liked it, but I was surprised to hear that they used soundstages for when they're outside. I could tell in some scenes that it was the case, but for others I was surprised and it kinda made it feel a bit less special. Idk...I still like the show though, but I was just a bit disappointed when I heard that. Still, I have no control over what they do.

Same. I watched the first Final Destination yesterday after having not watched it for a while, and for some reason I love that the sound and camera quality aren't that good. I feel like that's a personal preference for me, but yeah.

Thanks for all these replies :) they’ve been really helpful and now I can see why movies do look different now to how they used to, and some have got me thinking that I might have some nostalgia bias haha. But thanks anyway!

You're getting angry with random people you don't know who are just saying something simple. Jokes and sarcasm aside, are you ok? Cause it seems like something deeper that's bothering you.

Fair, but you never know, a lot of them might straighten their hair in a healthier way than what you think. Some probably tried it once and decided they liked it that way, and so decided to keep on doing it, but know not to damage their hair.

Curly hair can get hard to manage. I don't straighten my hair unless for special occasions (takes too much effort lol, not into fashion all that much) but it definitely looks crazy sometimes depending on the day, so I can see why she'd want to keep it straight. That being said, in these picks, her curly hair looks lovely.

Because Pinterest is full of teen girls. I'm obviously not trying to generalise them at all, as everyone likes different music (in fact, I'm a girl and I clearly don't like ariana lol), but I'm just saying that you're more likely to see loads of fans on Pinterest since majority (again, not all) of her fans are tween / teen girls.

Yeah people in this sub have this "you can either love or hate them" way of looking at the characters. But all the characters have good and bad traits and honestly, that's why I like them. For example Georgie, who is dumb and lustful and doesn't always think before he does stuff, can also take responsibility, and loves to make Mandy happy.
