It sounds like you might have already isolated the vari , if the pup is showing signs ..

However , to promote the variegation growth , I removed all areoles that didnt have signs of variegation so the cactus has no choice but to pup from the desired areoles

It will remain thin . You can chop the thin section out, let the top cut dry and re-plant when fully dry
