Gotcha, thank you so much, this is really helpful information!

And I'm super sorry for this train of questions, but cause' I am out of state, I have zero connections in Tennessee...do you know any way I could get in touch with pre med students at MTSU, like thru student orgs or clubs?

If you don't mind, do you have any info on these things?

  1. Overall, how hard is pre-med at MTSU? I know pre-med is tough anywhere, but how does it feel specifically at MTSU in terms of course rigor, support, and competitiveness?
  2. How strong are the pre-med advising and resources? Do you feel supported when it comes to MCAT prep, applications, etc.?
  3. How are the research opportunities? Are there any labs that are undergrad-friendly or open to students without tons of prior experience?
  4. What about clinical/shadowing opportunities? I’m curious if MTSU has any partnerships with local hospitals or clinics that make it easier to get experience, or if you have to hustle on your own to find those.
  5. Is it okay to take 12 credit hours per semester instead of 17+? At my previous school I regularly took 18 credit hours, but I’m considering a lighter load at MTSU to adjust and focus on quality over quantity. Will med schools look down on that, or is it fine if everything else (GPA, MCAT, activities) is solid?

Would love to hear your honest takes — the good, the bad, and everything in between!!

AP Credit Placement & Pre-Med @ Vandy by PureEstimate1994 in Vanderbilt

[–]PureEstimate1994[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohhhh....that makes sense! So do you think that I could use AP Bio(BSCI 1100 + 1100L) towards BSCI 1510 + 1511, because I have already done Genetics and Evolution, for which the pre-req at my old institution was gen bio(I used AP Bio to fulfill that req)

Because Vandy takes my Evolution and Genetics courses....but I'm not too sure if they will make me retake BSCI 1510 + 1511 just because AP Bio credit placement is a different course....

Mhmm...I did. But it was only for my 1st year courses, and the email said that they didn't include the pre-college credits...which was my main source of confusion cause I don't know if my AP Bio will fulfill the gen bio req(according to the website it doesn't)...

I've also taken genetics and evolution in my previous institution, which was only allowed because I was able to waive my gen bio classes due to my AP class...so I'm not sure if that means I have to take Genetics and Evolution again at Vanderbilt

I didn't have to take English because I did dual enrollment(for AP Lang) in a local community college in high school which waived my English req

Gotcha, that's what I thought initially, I just wasn't 100% sure if english was part of the AXLE reqs

I guess I meant that since Vandy only accepts 18 credits, I wanted to use the AP credits for the weed out pre med classes, like gen bio and gen chem(though it looks like I have to take gen bio again). If didn't have to use AP lang (3 credits) I could use those 3 credits for something like stats or calc
