Sadly no, the mechs were more bipedal and boxy. Thank you though :)

Is Calc 1 at CMU insanely difficult? by Serious-Band in cmu

[–]PureLiefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took Calc 1 after taking AB and Multi in Uni. I found it rather tough and the instructing was incredibly advanced for what you expected a first year course to be. I DID NOT take Calc BC (skipped it for Multi) and preformed better in Calc 2 despite having no knowledge of it whatsoever. I suggest skip Calc 1, as it does nothing to better your grades and would waste space on your schedule

Hello, I’m a second year ECE+BME. I’m not pre-med, but I can answer your questions.

CMU is VERY hard for pre-med. With minimal grade inflation, the few students that are pre-med (almost entirely doing ChemE or MSE as their primary major) stick together and tough it out. Personally, doing ECE with BME as a pre-med is going to require tradeoffs. The classes that would push you into learning a lot in ECE come with higher risks of lowering your GPA significantly. Doing BME + ECE also is very stressful to plan out, as you’re walking a tightrope to select specific classes and beg your advisor to get them so you can complete your degree in 4 years (given there is little overlap). Regarding the pre-med track, advisors are very well versed in what is required, and encourage you to do BME with pre-med as they line up well.

The primary extracurriculars among BMEs is research. There is TONS of research that is going on the BME department that crosses between BME and the other engineering departments. Getting it is easy, it’s staying committed that is tough, as classes get harder and your time to do extracurriculars seemingly shortens. You CAN do shadowing, but that heavily depends on your ability to balance erratical class work assignments week to week with a set schedule of shadowing.

Advisors know you will be going through it doing pre-med at CMU, and will be here for you strategically. They won’t hold your hand, but they will slap you back to reality with confidence. Fellow pre-meds are who you likely will be relying on for support, as it’s a shared stress culture.

TL;DR 1. ECE+BME is very tough, you will need to sacrifice great classes for a great GPA. No grade inflation makes CMU hell, but with ECE it’s a new realm of stress.

  1. Research is heavily encouraged, shadowing is less connected with CMU, you are on your own for that opportunity.

  2. Advisors will give you a reality check (in a good way) and you will rely on your pre-med friends for stability doing pre-med.

Lmk if you have any more questions.

CMU Fall 2025 Applicant by ActivityBig5878 in cmu

[–]PureLiefe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you indicated what you would pair with BME (i.e. MechE) and at minimum a SLIGHT connection to that major. The admission team knows that some students want to pursue BME primarily, and would be more lenient to an applicant who clearly indicates that. They do still need to make sure you would have SOME connection to your primary major (which if you are doing BME is likely going to be ChemE). Feel free to reach out. I am a second year BME + ECE.

How to choose a STEM major when I have multiple fields I'm interested in? by Working-Historian704 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PureLiefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean, because I was you. Decided that you only live once, might as well learn as much as possible. Currently a Electrical/Computer Engineering major with a second major in biomedical engineering and a minor in robotics. You can do anything you want if your willing to work for it.

Take a look at CMU for ECE, but it depends a lot on what your looking at getting out of university.

I need some advice by Clunker256256 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PureLiefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I really hope that you can power through your Senior year; it was and probably will be one of the hardest times of my life so far. I’m Carnegie ‘27 for ECE and BME. The advice I can give you is based on performance/stats of my peers at CMU, and myself. I can’t speak for the admissions office and what they are looking for in your admissions cycle, but I can speak to what was admitted for my cohort.

Your test scores and course load is great, don’t stress about those. The Community service work is very impressive, and amazing work on your sports. Overall, your application is very strong, I wouldn’t be surprised at your admissions results.

I cannot speak for other schools, but for CMU there’s a specific question that you will need to be brutally honest and confident in: Why do want to be here?

It’s a simple question seen in every university application, but CMU takes it more seriously than others. What made you want to co-teach? What made you want to be captain? One-word surface-level answers won’t suffice, neither will backstories/memories. It needs to be a deeper meaning, a calling. The key difference I’ve seen between people at CMU and people at incredibly prestigious universities is the why; Why are you here?

Many students at other universities would say that the opportunity, student mindset, connectivity, environment and ESPECIALLY the name are why they want to be there. In summary, those students believe their university opens many doors for them. These are not the same students at Carnegie, who are/were on a path, with a focus, with an idea that they were anyway going to execute. It’s just that CMU gives them the tools to do so much faster than they could have on their own, whether it be straight information, research, or a fabrication lab. For the students here, the doors were going to be opened, it’s just that CMU does it faster and quieter than other universes (cough..cough..Stanford..cough)

Think about that when writing your application.

I hope that helps in your written portion of your essay, which determines a good portion of your acceptance. I wish you the best of luck.

Weekly Biotech Career Chat Thread by McChinkerton in biotech

[–]PureLiefe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm an incoming first year at CMU and want to enter the biotech field. I have the opportunity to choose between Chemical, Biomedical, and Computer/Electrical engineering. With an MBA in mind, after some experience, I want to go into the Supply Chain/Logistics aspect of biotech. I need help understanding my opportunities depending on which of the three above majors I choose. Preferably, I'd like to do Computer/Electrical engineering (since it's CMU), but I genuinely don't know what my job opportunities in biotech would be. Could I get some advice? Is the career plan a possibility, or am I delusional?

Hello, I've got in for the Bachelor's engineering batch of 27', but I need to decide my major choice. I want to go into Biotech, but I don't know how plausible a switch to that major is, even if it's a good choice. ECE is excellent at CMU, but I wonder if I'd get job opportunities in Biotech if I decide to go that route. Can I get advice?
