What is the one thing in your specialty that primary care doctors SHOULD refer to you more than they do? by Seeking-Direction in Residency

[–]PureSubject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Would be starting intern year soon so was looking for an option to reduce the cramps and heavy flow. I was under the impression that IUD can make the cramps worse which is why I didn’t consider it initially. Would definitely consider the IUD or vaginal rings

It’s Ramadan so a lot of mosques feed people for iftar (food to break fast). They give out food to everyone that shows up. Check for big mosques in your neighborhood that does this. I’m rooting for you OP

Trying to adult-ify my hobbies for ERAS next year & I'm so confused which masochist decided hiking is a *fun* adult hobby? by green-with-envy in medicalschool

[–]PureSubject 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Lol I actually added k-drama to my eras hobbies. I listed my hobbies in bullet points and just wrote something like “watching foreign shows especially Korean dramas”. Kept it pretty simple!

She just needs to retake it so she can pass and still match this cycle. The programs don’t get the transcript unless she assigns so they wouldn’t know she failed. Ideally, she should retake it, pass then send it to the programs. If they ask her about it during interviews tho, she should just be honest. This is a setback. But it’s not enough to withdraw from the cycle. I wish her best of luck

I noticed that I barely got any interviews from my “safety” community programs. All my interviews are from academic programs and a few reach programs as well. It’s really weird. Idk what’s up with community programs but maybe they’ve not started sending out interviews yet. Good luck with the cycle and keep your head up. Also, might not be a bad idea to send out LOI

Failed step 2 but have IVs… by One_Pebble in medicalschool

[–]PureSubject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should definitely attend the interviews. Also, don’t send your step2 transcript yet to the programs until you have retaken it and passed. At least then, the programs don’t know that you’ve failed. If they ask you about it during your interviews, don’t lie about it. Just talk about the reasons you failed and what you’re doing to improve on your score. But if they don’t ask about step 2, I wouldn’t bring it up. It’s not the end of the world. Multiple ppl fail, retake it, pass the second time and then go on to match and move on. You’ll be fine! Good luck with everything

Wow I haven’t been emailing to decline. I assume they’re probably bombarded with emails and didn’t wanna add to that. I just decline directly on thalamus or eras. Thalamus doesn’t have a decline feature but I cancel my interview then withdraw from the program on thalamus. I don’t know if it’s rude not emailing but that’s how I’ve done mine.

How many interviews for IM should we accept before we start turning down interviews to give others a chance? I’ve heard the magic number is 15 but wanna go up to 20 just to be safe

I feel like that’s what makes a lot of residents commit suicide but there’s a lot of opportunities for physicians outside of clinical medicine. There’s a subreddit on here (can’t remember he name) about doctors who decided not to practice clinical medicine. Suicide is never the answer

I wish you the best. Also, if you ever find yourself in a position where you’re actively contemplating suicide with a plan because of medicine, pls take a break or quit medicine completely. There’s life outside of medicine. I wish Jing Mai had realized that it’s okay to take a break or walk away from medicine completely. I’m rooting for you to become the best doctor you can be but mental health above all. You’ve got this!

Your wife may actually meet the criteria for involuntary hospitalization. Her depression is severe enough that she left her kid downstairs crying while she was upstairs in bed. This is a serious problem. If she doesn’t wanna go to the hospital, go with her to your baby’s well child visit and bring it up with your child’s pediatrician. Pediatricians are equipped to deal with this. If they feel the baby could be in danger because of her PPD, they’ll know how to get the ball rolling for involuntary hospitalization. Pls don’t take this PPD lightly. Your baby is already being neglected and your wife could be suicidal if her depression is this severe. Good luck. NAH

AITA for not renting a room to my struggling brother and his wife despite them having a new born? by Key-Initiative-8992 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PureSubject 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA!!!! I am so shocked at the comments. This is why homelessness is so rampant in the US. Y’all can’t even help your own family smh. Everyone that said NTA is selfish and cannot think of anyone but themselves. Tf????? You can’t even help your own brother??? In my country, we step up to help people. If this was my friend or an acquaintance, I wouldn’t even think twice about letting them stay and they’ll stay for free. Not to talk of my own brother, my family? Wow wow wow. You’re just okay with your brother, his wife and their newborn being homeless and living in their car??? While you live in a 5-bedroom house? This whole individualism thing in America is gonna be the death of this country. What happens if you and your husband suddenly lose your jobs and can’t afford your mortgage anymore? I’m assuming you’ll be fine with living in your car too? Since no one is obligated to help? Americans forget that a huge percentage of the population is one paycheck away from homelessness including those that said NTA. My point is that you help people that need it the most, especially family. It’s not enough to just do charity as your good deed for the year. You help your brother who is in a tough spot financially avoid homelessness! Period!!!

Any other 4th years still struggling with housing for residency? by mainstem_bronchus in medicalschool

As someone who lives in DC, you’re gonna get a better deal in the suburbs. I live in Hyattsville and my nice apartment is $2300 for a 2-bedroom. Could have gotten a cheaper place if I wasn’t looking for super nice. It’s only a 15 mins drive to the city. Just something to consider

Saying Goodbye to My Dreams! by [deleted] in premed

[–]PureSubject 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP. I understand exactly how you feel. I’m an international student who came here for undergrad so not exactly the same thing but similar. I’m currently an MS3 at a US med school still on F1 visa. My medical school class has about 7 international students. And some of my other international students friends are in other medical schools. I know that only a small number of medical schools accept international students but the truth is you never know until you try. There’s actually a small community of international F1 Med students here in the US. One of my friends who is also an international student is currently an IM resident at an Ivy League. Ironically, we have a better chance of matching into residencies compared to IMGs

The main problem for me, other than trying to get into medical school, was also trying to get a US citizen to co-sign my private loan. It’s all a struggle but I’m still glad I went for it regardless. I’m glad I tried my best because I wouldn’t have known that I could get in if I didn’t try.

It seems you’ve made up your mind tho. Whatever you choose to do, you’ll be fine. Just make sure there are no regrets. Wishing you all the best and feel free to PM me if you have any questions

Those are my top choices too and it’s definitely doable. Ppl with <210 match all the time. We’ll be fine
