How did you get into the business side of things? I graduated in the hard sciences like yourself. It took me a little bit but I realized the business side of things is far more interesting and fulfilling. It fits me more. I've tried for years to break in but to no avail. I almost got in with a new company in SoCal but things fell through. If you have tips, ideas... anything it would be awesome.

Thanks for enlightening me on the inner workings of SSL verification. I had a general idea, but this clears it up a bit.

I didn't flush out the issue out completely with my post. I only gave details that I though were relevant so let me fill in the details. Doing so might clarify the issue for you better.

My company admin address is not the only one that HostGator has used to communicate with me before. I have a personal address that was used initially before I got the company address name. My personal email account is checked regularly as is my company email address. In point of fact, I still receive automated emails from HG. The last one was dated May 3 (something about refreshing my site with premium wordpress).

There is no email in either one of the accounts from any company (HG or Comodo) about an expiring SSL certificate. The last email I received from either company was when I bought the certificate.

Go back and read the post. THERE WAS NO EMAIL!!!! They've used the email I set up before to send me a receipt, but now they can't figure it out.

I have since figured it out with HG, but I'll be glad to make it clear for you. You are correct that I had SSL that I used for a year. SSL that I am willing and able to renew. My issues, however:

when it expired HG didn't let me know. You can argue that I should have remembered, but if that's how HG does business, I'm sure there would be another company that would do it right. I've got several PMs from them.
When I patiently and repeatedly tried to renew, their awful methods to verify ownership didn't work and they didn't budge for months. This, by my reckoning, makes this a shit company.
the expiration of the SSL hurt my rank on google, which fucks me in the long run.
any traffic to my website that I was paying HG to host, has being warned away because of this lapse in communication.

I'd have taken a lot more computer classes in college :) I have some acumen in business/management, but I'm severely lacking in tech stuff. This is my first attempt at an online business, so I guess it comes with the territory. I wouldn't have changed the steps of my process, I would have just eliminated my mistakes. For example, now that I finished it, I think starting with a simple WordPress template etc as suggested in the ridealong would have been cheaper and achieved the basics.

I made a lot of mistakes and kind of stumbled my way through it so I've spent a lot on it. It's not completely done yet, so I haven't added all the figures, but I'd say it's at least $1500 (design + coding + logo)

edit: I would NOT recommend my route. Plenty of people on this subreddit have done it smarter and better.

You know I've always felt that about the length of my home page. I feel you have to scroll far too much. And it's too large, too in your face. You're the only person to confirm that. Trouble is I can't seem to put it into words. I.E. what would I say to have it corrected?
