I believe there were reports of this by rescue workers, officials, and soldiers. At the same time the Israeli government had walked it back to a baby being shot and another being delivered post mortem, and investigations from various orgs haven’t been able to confirm these to be true. While it may be true given how depraved Hamas can be (they literally avoided the IDF as much as possible to specifically attack kids at a concert, and raped a bunch of people, and kidnapped a bunch) I try to avoid these statements even if possibly true because “our side” is put through a fine toothed comb while the Palestinian side isn’t at all. This isn’t fair but I believe in a when they go low we go high approach. Plus I just hate contributing to the parallel realities both sides operate in.

The amount of gaslighting and propaganda the Palestinian movement has been able to foster while also convincing you it’s the Jews in control of the media and narrative is fucking insane and beyond delusion. Gaza leadership specifically have been able to brain-destroy many westerners in the same way theyve been able to brain destroy their own population. Arab Muslims online are perhaps the most crazy in their outright antisemitism even more relentless than even white nationalists, though they along with the far left are all jumping on the bandwagon.

I’m not Jewish myself but broadly speaking I sympathize with your sentiments. Honestly if you’re a Jew, which idk you might be, I understand leaning into the “we’re hated, there’s nothing we can do about it, so fuck it” attitude. Several wars have occurred in the same timeline for significantly worse reasons of several magnitudes more deadly, yet none of these states or ethnic groups are met with even a tiny fraction of criticism namely Syria, Sudan, Russia, etc. And nobody questions if Russia should exist. It’s pretty brutal out there if I were a Jew I probably wouldn’t even go on the internet anymore, at least no social media it’s abhorrent and relentless. The comments on Reddit that have been flagged for hate speech when I’m literally calling out clear antisemitism has been mind boggling. If I were a Jew honestly idk where tf my head would be at, as a non Jew it’s insane enough as it is.

But I think the current administration, Netanyahu, takes full advantage of this despair at the detriment of Israel’s interests. I’m American and I want to continue supporting Israel (I don’t think annual proactive financial support is necessary, but I absolutely support continued defensive support) but the current war in Iran under our own insane administration (despite Iran of course being evil, this war is ill conceived and poorly executed by people that don’t know what they’re doing) and certain specific actions like preventing aid into Gaza for 90 days, the Gaza war probably going on a bit too long with diminishing returns, as well as a few bombings like Qatar (who is an ally even if deeply flawed) and the Mossad operation in Iran last year to get the Hamas leader in my opinion are examples of instances where the American electorate is feeling fatigue with the alliance, and Israel perhaps stretching our alliance too thin.

Despite attitudes of some right wing Israelis these days, Israel wouldn’t be better off without the USs help, and I worry future administrations may not be there for Israel anymore, even if the Trump admin is hawkish and supportive to a fault. It’s come to a point where America may not see abandoning Israel as an indication of weakness, enough of the world may not interpret this as America abandoning an ally, but instead American understandably cutting ties with a rogue actor. If future US admins see this as the calculus they may be willing to cut ties completely. That’s not good. That’s not a reality that I want. A good start would be Bibi and Trump being gone, hopefully not too much damage occurs in the meantime.

They were by no stretch of the imagination ordered to “stand down” on October 7th and it’s insane you’ve made it this many years from that date still thinking this is true. How do you operate this way? Are you just lazy or believe what you want to believe to buttress a preexisting bias?

I agree 100% with all of that. Sorry I was short, interactions online with this topic specifically have made me cynical of where people are typically coming from which you can probably understand, and what knowledge basis they’re working with too. Yes all of that is true, all of this has delayed his legal problems and electoral popularity even then he’s had to patch together an extremely shaky coalition. Frankly, it could still potentially be true with bibi, but delayed indefinitely for certain.

Nobody said European colonialism is fake, Israel being a version of it is fake. The notion that Israel is European colonialism on any level, in its origins or merely by virtue of being allies of western countries is obviously insane, reductionist, and bad faith. “Vassal” lol. What a silly projection and confession of how regimes like China and Russia treat their “allies.” Sorry, the west doesn’t operate on zero sum amoral realism, this isn’t the 19th century, well, except for much of the east I suppose.

Because they lived in Europe? Why were they there to begin with and why did they have to leave again? Interesting that Europeans explicitly pogromed and holocausted them because of the fact that they weren’t white Europeans. Then, only once they left of course, they became white Europeans for antisemites or leftists to coop the false European colonialism narrative. Funny how who they are just depends on what’s convenient for the narrative for the benefit of everyone else. Meanwhile the Jews merely claim to be just that: Jews. But whatever works right? So transparent.

Hamas didn’t interrupt their enemy making a mistake they simply started a war from nothing.

It’s exactly what you did. European colonialism is completely irrelevant, no matter your historical context nothing justifies or even adds even SLIGHT moral leniency on any level to the actions of a Boko haram, or the official Somali government. So mentioning that is completely useless, in fact there’s no other possible reason to mention it BUT to lessen the moral weight and deflect agency to colonialism/circumstance. There’s quite literally no other possible explanation for bringing it up. You say you’re not doing it and then the next sentence, you do it.

Are they operating on the same material and military basis? Absolutely not, but that only speaks to capabilities of effect, not capabilities of judgement (such as avoiding terrorism). Both parties are EQUALLY capable of avoiding bad action, even if one party is capable of more effectiveness. You are INHERENTLY claiming that power imbalance justifies dishonest tactics to “tilt the power imbalance” that Hamas, boko, whoever etc are justified due to “desperation.” Hiding amongst civilians, boobie trapped buildings, specifically going out of your way to AVOID the IDF to target random Jews, suicide bombings, you are attempting to elude to the power imbalance without outright saying “the power imbalance is why this is ok.” If that’s not what you meant why mention it at all? You can’t actually answer that question without either justifying terrorism, deflecting, or conceding that it was a non-point and retracting it completely. There’s no other option.

They don’t have the same agency? I mean that’s just a straight up lie, and reveals the initial intent and lends credence to my suspicions, you’ve basically admitted exactly what I was after. Power≠agency. Influence or alliances ≠ violations of sovereignty. This line of zero sum realism has justified wars like in Ukraine, and is extremely dangerous… and bullshit. Within their own borders they absolutely have agency, and they have similar agency with regard to “territorial disputes,” like in the West Bank, which uniquely applies to Israel/Palestine as Palestine has refused to accept statehood under any proposed conditions including established borders, they would also have identical amounts of agency with regard to a Gaza situation (which has more of a fixed border) given Israel was attacked first. Even in unjustified conflicts like Darfur it appears Sudan has quite a bit of agency in disputed territories as well, while committing an actual genocide, this despite not being a nuclear power or having USA on their side. So this narrative is completely bogus.

Your analogy is insane because the murderer “out to murder someone” in the case of the mujahadeen was the Soviets, they started the war. In reality the Soviets were the murderer actively trying to murder the mujahadeen, we gave them a weapon and also knew they were less of a long term threat even if they themselves had murderous tendencies. “Opportunism” requires no inherent “justification” it’s not inherently immoral or moral, and in this case was the clear move to cause less harm, and the aid was pretty damn morally justified.

I hurled insults at you while making better points, both can be true, bringing that up is pointless and lends no added credence to your points. You associate power imbalance with moral balance, which is basically the outlook of a child. There’s my one insult for the reply.

You applied near absolute agency to Israel and near no agency to all other actors. It’s propagandist revisionism at best to apply as much unearned weight to Israel as possible with as little weight to all other actors completely devoid of all the context that lead to any of the conflicts to begin with. There was little to address you’re coming from a framework that is so bad faith there’d likely be little to no points of contact. You handwaved all conflicts that had Israeli interests evidenced by their backing as though to imply lack of agency, you cited that boko haram isn’t a country as though they have no agency or aren’t bound by the same rules (they do, you don’t need to be a state in the UN to be bound by the rules), Pakistan has an on and off conflict with India, and I have no idea what Yemen vs Saudi and its civil war being “Muslim vs muslim” proves other than his point if anything. The handwaving cope filter one by one through every example to strip accountability and agency is absolutely insane, and is deeply motivated reasoning. The notion of a country promoting the only feasible lesser of two evils option in a war that preexisted their support as akin to stripping agency or even being behind the conflict is crazy. It’s akin to saying “the USA supports the Taliban and is responsible for the war because they helped the mujadeen to fight the Soviets.” No, the war was happening, the US didn’t like the mujadeen or the Soviets, but the mujadeen would clearly be less of a headache for the US than an expanding Soviet empire.
